Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

That night, I could not sleep.

The guest room was comfortable.

The bed was soft.

The roof above me was strong.

Everything I had desperately wanted only days before was finally mine.

But peace was impossible.

Not with unanswered questions sitting beside me like ghosts.

Why did Clara know Robert’s secret?

Why did Elias Wallace fear him?

And what happened five years ago that made an entire town decide Robert Kendrick was dangerous?

I got out of bed before sunrise.

The kitchen was empty.

I expected Robert to be asleep.

Instead, I found him sitting alone at the table.

A cup of untouched coffee sat in front of him.

“You don’t sleep much.””

He looked up.

“Neither do you.””

I sat across from him.

“I need the truth.””

Robert stared at me.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he reached into a drawer and pulled out an old newspaper.

He placed it on the table.

My eyes moved over the faded headline.

LOCAL LAND DISPUTE ENDS IN TRAGEDY.

My hands became cold.

I read the article.

It described a confrontation between Robert Kendrick and a man named Thomas Vail.

According to the story, Thomas had threatened Robert’s family over land.

The fight ended with Thomas disappearing.

The town believed Robert was responsible.

I looked up.

“Did you kill him?””

Robert did not react.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

I believed him.

I did not know why.

I just did.

“Then what happened?””

Robert looked down.

“Thomas was working with Elias.””

My breath caught.

“Another connection.””

“Yes.””

He folded his hands.

“Thomas tried to force my father’s land away from us. When I confronted him, he attacked me.””

“And?””

“I fought back.””

His voice lowered.

“But when the sheriff arrived, Thomas was gone.””

“Gone?””

“Yes.””

“Did they search?””

“They searched.””

“And?””

Robert looked toward the window.

“They found blood.””

The room became silent.

“But not a body?””

“No.””

I understood.

The town filled in the blanks.

A missing man.

Blood.

A feared rancher.

A perfect story.

“You let them believe it?””

Robert’s eyes met mine.

“I was twenty-three. My father was dead. My mother was sick. My ranch was falling apart.””

He paused.

“I learned something.””

“What?””

“Sometimes people don’t want the truth.””

His voice was quiet.

“They want the version that gives them someone to blame.””

I looked at the newspaper again.

Then I noticed something.

A small handwritten note was attached to the corner.

I picked it up.

Robert reached for it.

Too late.

I had already read it.

THOMAS VAIL WAS NEVER MISSING.

My heart stopped.

“What does this mean?””

Robert took the paper from my hand.

His face changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Real fear.

“Where did you find this?””

“It was attached to the article.””

“That wasn’t there before.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“Someone put it there?””

Robert stood.

“Rose, you need to leave.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“This is bigger than you.””

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand that every time someone threatens you, you push everyone away.””

I stood too.

“But I’m already involved.””

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

The room went silent.

Then came a sound from outside.

A horse.

Someone approaching.

Robert immediately grabbed his coat.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

“Rose.””

His voice carried warning.

But I had spent my whole life being told where I belonged.

I was tired of it.

I followed him.

Outside, a man waited near the gate.

An older man.

The sheriff.

Robert stopped.

“Sheriff Dalton.””

The sheriff removed his hat.

“Robert.””

His eyes moved to me.

Then back to Robert.

“We need to talk.””

“About what?””

The sheriff swallowed.

“Thomas Vail.””

Every muscle in Robert’s body tightened.

“What about him?””

The sheriff reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

“We found this yesterday.””

Robert took it.

The sheriff looked at me.

Then quietly said:

“It has Rose Hartley’s name on it.””

My blood ran cold.

Robert opened the envelope.

He pulled out a single piece of paper.

His expression changed as he read it.

“What does it say?”” I whispered.

Robert looked at me.

And for the first time since I met him…

He looked afraid for me.

“Rose,” he said quietly.

“This letter was written by your father.””

I stepped closer.

“What did he say?””

Robert held the paper tightly.

Then he whispered the words that changed everything.

“Your father knew you were going to come here.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

Robert looked toward the empty road.

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“It means someone planned this long before you arrived.””

And then he handed me the letter.

At the bottom was a name.

May you like

A name I had never expected to see.

Thomas Vail.
