Chapter 5: The Letter From The Dead

I stared at the name written at the bottom of my father’s letter.
Thomas Vail.
A man I had only known as a headline.
A man Robert had described as dangerous.
A man everyone believed had disappeared five years earlier.
My fingers trembled as I held the paper.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
Robert stood beside me, silent.
Sheriff Dalton removed his hat and looked toward the ground.
“I wish it didn’t.””
I looked at him.
“You knew about this?””
The sheriff sighed.
“Not until yesterday.””
“Then why bring it here?””
His eyes moved toward Robert.
“Because some things are too dangerous to hide.””
Robert took the letter from my hand.
“Where was this found?””
The sheriff hesitated.
“Inside the old Vail property.””
My heart sank.
“The place where Thomas lived?””
“Yes.””
Robert’s expression became darker.
“That property has been abandoned for years.””
“Not completely,” Dalton said.
Robert looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
The sheriff stepped closer.
“It means someone has been there recently.””
The wind moved across the empty fields.
Suddenly the peaceful ranch felt different.
Every shadow seemed to hold a secret.
Robert unfolded the letter again.
“Read it,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
“Rose.””
“Please.””
For a moment, he resisted.
Then he began.
“Rose, if you are reading this, then I have failed to protect you.””
My breath caught.
The words were my father’s.
I knew his handwriting.
I knew every curve of his letters.
Robert continued.
“I trusted the wrong people. Elias Wallace was never my partner. He was only waiting for the right moment to take everything.””
My hands covered my mouth.
The sheriff looked away.
Robert kept reading.
“The debt documents are false. The land records were changed. If anything happens to me, do not trust anyone who claims they are helping you.””
The paper shook slightly in Robert’s hand.
Then he reached the final lines.
“Find Robert Kendrick. He knows the truth. He is the only man I trust to keep you safe.””
Nobody spoke.
The world seemed to stop.
I looked at Robert.
“You knew my father?””
He did not answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
Finally, he said:
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know who you were.””
I stared.
“What?””
Robert looked at the ranch.
“Your father came here five years ago.””
The pieces slowly connected.
“He knew about Thomas Vail.””
“Yes.””
“And Elias.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Robert’s face tightened.
“Because your father asked me not to.””
I stepped closer.
“My father asked you to protect me?””
“He asked me to stay away from your life unless you were in danger.””
My eyes burned.
“You could have helped me.””
“I tried.””
The answer shocked me.
“When?””
Robert looked toward the hills.
“The week before your father died.””
Silence.
“What happened?””
Robert took a deep breath.
“He came to my ranch at night. He was scared.””
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The image was impossible.
My father had always been calm.
Strong.
The person who made me believe everything would be okay.
“He told me Elias was planning something. He said if he disappeared, I needed to watch over you.””
My voice became quiet.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Robert looked at me.
“Because he thought telling you would put you in more danger.””
A tear slipped down my cheek before I could stop it.
I turned away.
I hated crying in front of people.
Especially strangers.
But Robert did something unexpected.
He didn’t offer empty comfort.
He didn’t tell me everything would be fine.
He simply stood there.
Giving me space.
That somehow meant more.
Later that afternoon, Robert and I rode toward town.
We needed answers.
The first place we visited was the old records office.
The woman behind the desk nearly dropped her papers when she saw Robert.
“Mr. Kendrick.””
“Mrs. Bell.””
Her eyes moved to me.
“And who is this?””
“Rose Hartley.””
The woman’s expression changed.
“I see.””
I noticed.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone except me.
Robert placed the letter on the desk.
“We need access to land records from five years ago.””
Mrs. Bell immediately looked nervous.
“I don’t think that’s possible.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Why?””
She lowered her voice.
“Because those records were removed.””
“By who?””
She looked around.
Then whispered:
“Elias Wallace.””
My stomach tightened.
“Can he do that?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“But he did.””
Before we could ask more, the office door opened.
Elias Wallace walked inside.
Perfect coat.
Calm smile.
Completely confident.
“You two look busy.””
Robert turned.
“You followed us.””
Elias smiled.
“No.””
His eyes moved to me.
“I came because I wanted to save you from making a mistake.””
I stepped forward.
“What mistake?””
Elias looked at Robert.
“Trusting him.””
Robert’s expression did not change.
But his hand closed into a fist.
Elias noticed.
“You see, Rose, everyone thinks Robert Kendrick is a hero.””
He walked closer.
“But they don’t know what happened five years ago.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
Elias smiled.
“I’m talking about the night Thomas Vail disappeared.””
Robert’s voice became cold.
“Leave.””
Elias ignored him.
Then he said the one thing I never expected.
“Ask Robert why Thomas was last seen alive on his property.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Robert.
He said nothing.
And that silence was the answer I feared most.
May you like
Because now I had two men telling me two completely different stories.
And only one of them could be telling the truth.
