THE PATERNITY EXTORTION / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Mother Behind The Betrayal

I read the sentence three times.

Then a fourth.

My mother.

The woman who taught me to tie my shoes.

The woman who sat beside my bed when I was sick.

The woman who cried when I left for college.

The woman who told me family was the only thing money could never replace.

She was behind this.

I looked at Harold.

“You’re lying.””

He didn’t react.

“I wish I was.””

My fingers tightened around the letter.

“This is impossible.””

“Adrian…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My mother died.””

Harold looked down.

“I know.””

“Then how could she start anything?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me more than words could.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Harold sighed.

“Your mother wasn’t the person you believed she was.””

The sentence sounded familiar.

Everyone had been telling me that.

My wife.

My father.

My mother.

The people I trusted most were the people I knew least.

“Why?””

Harold looked at the letter.

“Because your mother believed your father stole her life.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She wanted control.””

“Over what?””

“You.””

The answer made my stomach tighten.

“She wanted you to become exactly what she wanted.””

I laughed quietly.

“My mother loved me.””

“Yes.””

Harold nodded.

“But love and control are sometimes confused by people who are afraid of losing power.””

I looked away.

Memories flooded back.

My mother choosing my clothes.

My mother choosing my friends.

My mother deciding what schools I attended.

At the time, I thought she was protecting me.

Now I wondered.

“Why Vanessa?””

Harold sat down.

“Because Vanessa was easier to manipulate than anyone else.””

“So my mother recruited her?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before your wedding.””

I felt sick.

Before Vanessa became my wife.

Before Olivia was born.

Before Emma and Sophia existed.

The entire thing was planned.

“Why would Vanessa agree?””

“Because your mother offered her something.””

“The trust.””

Harold nodded.

“And access to your life.””

I stared at the letter.

My mother.

My father.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

All connected.

All moving pieces around me like I wasn’t a person.

Like I was an investment.

A bloodline.

A number.

Not a son.

Not a father.

A resource.

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Tell me.””

His voice was urgent.

“Sir, Vanessa filed an emergency custody request.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“On what grounds?””

A pause.

Then:

“She claims you are unstable.””

I almost laughed.

“She tried to murder our daughter.””

“I know.””

“And they’re listening to her?””

“Her lawyers are arguing that your recent behavior proves emotional instability.””

I looked at the papers scattered across Harold’s desk.

The lies were already moving.

Vanessa didn’t need truth.

She only needed enough doubt.

“What about Sophia and Emma?””

“Your attorneys are fighting.””

“Where are they now?””

“At the hospital.””

My heart softened for a second.

My daughters.

Safe.

For now.

Then Marcus added:

“Sir.””

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

“What?””

“Daniel Whitmore requested a private meeting.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“He says he has proof Vanessa lied to him too.””

I almost refused.

Almost.

But I had learned something.

Everyone in this nightmare had a piece of the truth.

“I’ll meet him.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I looked at the letter.

“I’m just tired of being surprised.””

The meeting was held in a quiet hotel suite.

When Daniel entered, I barely recognized him.

The confident billionaire from the news was gone.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Broken.

For years, I had imagined confronting him.

I imagined anger.

A fight.

Revenge.

But when I saw him, I only felt confusion.

“You look disappointed.””

His voice was bitter.

I stared at him.

“I expected a monster.””

He gave a sad smile.

“Funny.””

“Why?””

“I expected the same thing from you.””

I said nothing.

Daniel sat down.

“I know what Vanessa told you.””

“That you were trying to steal my children.””

He nodded.

“She wasn’t completely wrong.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“I did want revenge.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Against my father?””

“Against yours.””

He looked away.

“Your father destroyed my family.””

“My father was responsible for that?””

“Yes.””

I remembered Harold’s words.

The lawsuit.

The betrayal.

But something still didn’t fit.

“You helped Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she promised she could make your father suffer.””

I clenched my jaw.

“And did she?””

He laughed quietly.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because your father died before he could see the consequences.””

Silence.

“Then why continue?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because by then, Vanessa had her own plans.””

“The children.””

He nodded.

“She changed the agreement.””

“What agreement?””

“The one your mother created.””

My breathing slowed.

“My mother?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

His expression changed.

“Then you know everything.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I know nothing.””

Daniel looked at me for a long moment.

Then he opened a briefcase.

Inside was a folder.

“I kept copies.””

I took it.

The first page was a contract.

The second was a handwritten note.

And the third page showed a payment record.

The sender:

My mother.

The recipient:

Vanessa.

The purpose:

*Ensure Adrian’s children are removed from direct paternal influence.*

My hands went cold.

“She wanted me to lose my children.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed you were weak.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She thought becoming a father would make you choose family over legacy.””

I stared at him.

“And that was bad?””

“To her, yes.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“She believed emotions made you vulnerable.””

I thought about Emma.

Sleeping behind a locked door.

Sophia trapped in a burning building.

All because powerful people thought love was weakness.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From the hospital.

My heart stopped.

I opened it.

*Mr. Cole, you need to come immediately.*

Attached was a photograph.

A legal document.

And Sophia standing beside a woman.

A woman I didn’t recognize.

Until I saw the name.

The woman holding Sophia’s hand was listed as her legal guardian.

The signature at the bottom belonged to:

*Vanessa Cole.*

I looked up.

“Impossible.””

Daniel stood.

“What happened?””

I showed him.

His face went pale.

“That’s not possible.””

“What?””

“That document was supposed to be destroyed.””

I stared at him.

“What document?””

He pointed.

“The original guardianship transfer.””

My stomach dropped.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning Vanessa still has legal control.””

I felt the room closing in.

“She can take them?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“If the court accepts it.””

My phone rang.

This time, it was the hospital.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A nurse spoke quickly.

“Mr. Cole, there has been an incident.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

“We’re sorry, but…”

Her voice shook.

“Your daughters are no longer in the room.””

I stood frozen.

“What?””

“Their guardian arrived with legal paperwork.””

My hands went numb.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Mrs. Vanessa Cole.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then at Daniel.

Then at the door.

The woman who stole twelve years from me had just stolen my daughters again.

But this time…

I wasn’t going to search for the truth.

I was going to take my family back.

And then my phone received one final message.

A photo.

Vanessa sitting in a car.

Emma and Sophia beside her.

Both girls crying.

May you like

Underneath the picture were seven words:

*“Come alone, or you lose them forever.””*
