Chapter 2: The Secret In The Blood Test
I stared at the photograph on my phone until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
Again.
And again.
As if the image would somehow change.
As if Vanessa would suddenly appear beside me and laugh, telling me it was all a misunderstanding.
But the picture remained the same.
A younger Vanessa.
A hospital room.
A newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
And a message accusing her of hiding the truth about the father.
My hand tightened around my phone.
For twelve years, I had lived with one certainty.
Olivia was my daughter.
My blood.
My legacy.
The reason I rushed home after exhausting business trips.
The reason I kept a photo of her first day of school inside my office drawer.
The reason I turned down opportunities that would have taken me away from home for months.
Now, in a single night, someone had placed a question mark over my entire life.
I looked at Emma sitting on the floor.
She was watching me with frightened eyes.
Waiting.
Children always know when adults are breaking.
Even when we pretend we are not.
“Emma,” I said gently.
She looked up.
“Yes?””
“Has Vanessa ever told you who your father is?””
Her fingers twisted the edge of the blanket.
“No.””
“Never?””
She shook her head.
“She said he didn’t want me.””
My chest tightened.
“Who said that?””
“Mom.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like she was afraid Vanessa might hear her from miles away.
I forced myself to stay calm.
“Emma, why were you living in this room?””
Her eyes dropped.
“I was bad.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“I made Olivia upset.””
I felt anger rising inside me.
“Why?””
“She said I was embarrassing.””
The little girl swallowed.
“She said people like us don’t belong at the dinner table.””
My jaw clenched.
“People like us?””
Emma nodded slowly.
“She said I was just a mistake.””
A mistake.
That word echoed in my head.
I had built an empire.
I had defeated competitors twice my size.
I had negotiated with people who tried to destroy me.
But hearing a child say she had been called a mistake felt like someone had reached inside my chest and crushed my heart.
I took off my jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.
“You are not a mistake.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t know that.””
“I do.””
“How?””
I looked into her eyes.
Because somehow, without a DNA test, without paperwork, without proof, I already knew.
But I needed answers.
“I just do.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Nobody had comforted her in so long that kindness seemed unfamiliar.
I stood up and called my head of security, Marcus.
“Get a private doctor to the mansion immediately.””
Marcus answered instantly.
“Is everything okay, sir?””
“No.””
I looked toward the staircase.
“Something is very wrong.””
Ten minutes later, Marcus arrived with Dr. Samuel Hayes.
The doctor had worked with my family for years.
He had treated Olivia when she had the flu as a child.
He had watched Vanessa and me celebrate birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries.
When he entered the room and saw Emma, his expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
My eyes narrowed.
“Samuel.””
He avoided my gaze.
“Adrian…”
“You know her?””
The silence answered before he did.
I stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.””
Dr. Hayes sighed.
“I was hoping this day would never come.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at Emma.
Then back at me.
“Adrian, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Have you ever done a DNA test with Olivia?””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because she’s my daughter.””
Samuel looked away.
That tiny movement told me everything.
I grabbed his arm.
“Why did you ask me that?””
He removed his glasses and rubbed his forehead.
“Because twelve years ago, Vanessa asked me to alter a medical record.””
The room went silent.
I could hear the rain hitting the windows.
“What record?””
He hesitated.
“An infant blood test.””
My voice became lower.
“Whose?””
He looked at Emma.
“Emma’s.””
The world tilted.
I stepped backward.
“No.””
Samuel’s expression was full of regret.
“Adrian, I was young. I was afraid of losing my license. Vanessa threatened me.””
“What did she ask you to do?””
He swallowed.
“She asked me to change the paternity report.””
My heart stopped.
“Change it to what?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
I walked toward the desk and placed my hands on it.
The wood felt cold beneath my palms.
“So Olivia…”
Samuel nodded.
“Olivia’s original test showed she was not biologically related to you.””
My breathing became uneven.
For twelve years.
Twelve years.
I had loved a child who wasn’t mine.
And my own child had been hidden away.
I looked at Emma.
She was too young to understand the storm happening around her.
She only knew one thing.
The father she had never met was finally standing in front of her.
And he looked devastated.
“Who is Olivia’s father?”” I asked.
Samuel remained silent.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
I turned sharply.
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“Vanessa never told me.””
My fists tightened.
“Then whose DNA was used?””
Samuel hesitated.
“A man named Daniel Whitmore.””
The name hit me harder than expected.
I knew Daniel.
Everyone in my industry knew Daniel.
He was the founder of a rival company.
A man who had spent years trying to destroy my business.
A man who had publicly insulted me.
A man who had once told reporters, “Adrian Cole’s greatest weakness is believing everyone loves him.””
I never understood why he said that.
Until now.
I looked at Emma.
“My enemy was your father?””
She didn’t answer.
She just looked scared.
I immediately regretted saying it out loud.
I crouched beside her.
“Emma, listen to me.””
She looked at me.
“Nothing about this changes how I see you.””
“But you hate me?””
The question broke me.
“Why would I hate you?””
“Because I ruined your family.””
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
A child.
A ten-year-old child.
Thought she had destroyed my life.
I shook my head.
“You didn’t ruin anything.””
“Mom said—”
“Your mother was wrong.””
Emma stared at me.
“You’re my dad?””
I wanted to say yes.
I wanted to promise her everything.
But I knew I needed the truth first.
“I believe I am.””
That answer wasn’t enough for her.
I saw it.
She had spent her entire life being unwanted.
Words meant nothing.
Actions were everything.
So I did the only thing I could.
I picked her up.
She was lighter than she should have been.
Far too light for a child her age.
Her arms wrapped around my neck.
And for the first time in twelve years, my daughter was in my arms.
Not Olivia.
Emma.
My real daughter.
My phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID showed Vanessa.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Adrian, where is Emma?””
I looked at the girl holding onto me.
“She’s with me.””
“You need to bring her back.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Back where?””
A pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“You don’t understand what you’ve uncovered.””
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice became desperate.
“Adrian, if you take Emma away, everything falls apart.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
“What falls apart, Vanessa?””
Silence.
Then she said something that made my blood freeze.
“Your daughter Olivia isn’t the only child whose identity was changed.””
I stood completely still.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa’s breathing became heavier.
“You think this is about one fake paternity test?””
I looked at Samuel.
He looked terrified.
“Adrian…”
Vanessa continued.
“You have no idea how deep this goes.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then at Emma.
Then at the locked room where she had spent years hidden from me.
A single thought moved through my mind.
If Vanessa had stolen my daughter’s identity…
How many other lies had she buried inside my family?
And before I could ask another question, Marcus rushed into the room holding a file.
His face was pale.
“Mr. Cole.””
I turned toward him.
“What is it?””
He looked at Emma.
Then lowered his voice.
“We found something in Vanessa’s private office.””
“What?””
He opened the folder.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Not Emma’s.
Not Olivia’s.
A third one.
With my name written as the father.
But the child’s name was someone I had never heard before.
And at the bottom of the document was the date.
May you like
A date that was impossible.
Because it was signed *six months before Emma was born.*
