Chapter 6: The Woman Who Stole Twelve Years
For a moment, nobody moved.
The abandoned restaurant felt frozen in time.
Rainwater dripped from Vanessa’s coat onto the cracked floor.
Evelyn stood behind me, tense and frightened.
And I stared at the woman I once promised to love forever.
The woman who had smiled beside me in photographs.
The woman who had kissed me goodnight while hiding an entire life from me.
“You’re lying.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Vanessa tilted her head.
“That’s what you always say when the truth hurts.””
I stepped forward.
“You locked my daughter away.””
Her expression barely changed.
“I protected what was mine.””
The words made my stomach turn.
“Mine?””
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“You’re talking about children.””
“Yes.””
She opened the folder.
“You’re talking about assets.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa glanced at Evelyn.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“I should have told him twelve years ago.””
Vanessa smiled.
“And you think he would have believed you?””
The silence answered.
Because deep down, I knew.
Twelve years ago, I probably wouldn’t have.
I would have defended my wife.
I would have called it impossible.
That was Vanessa’s greatest weapon.
She never needed to force people to believe her.
She made them want to.
She made the lie feel safer than the truth.
I looked at the folder in her hand.
“What is that?””
Vanessa opened it.
“Legal documents.””
“From who?””
“From the courts.””
My chest tightened.
She pulled out a paper.
“Temporary guardianship records.””
I grabbed it from her hand.
My eyes moved across the page.
The words blurred.
*Custody transferred due to concerns regarding paternal instability.*
My jaw clenched.
“Paternal instability?””
Vanessa watched my reaction.
“You were always traveling.””
“You know why.””
“Yes.””
Her voice was cold.
“You built your company.””
She stepped closer.
“You were never there.””
The accusation hit because it contained a small piece of truth.
I had missed dinners.
School events.
Parent-teacher meetings.
I had convinced myself providing was the same as being present.
But I never abandoned my children.
Never.
“You manipulated the system.””
Vanessa shrugged.
“I told them the truth.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You told them your version.””
Her smile faded.
“That’s how the world works, Adrian.””
“No.””
My voice became harder.
“That’s how you work.””
For the first time, anger appeared on her face.
Good.
I wanted her angry.
I wanted to see the person behind the mask.
“You think you’re the victim?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Do you know what it was like being married to you?””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“You had everything.””
She laughed quietly.
“Everyone admired you. Everyone respected you. Everyone knew your name.””
Her fingers tightened around the folder.
“But nobody saw me.””
I shook my head.
“So you destroyed your own children because you wanted attention?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“I secured my future.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Control.
I looked at Evelyn.
“She never changed.””
Evelyn whispered:
“No.””
Vanessa heard her.
“You were always weak, Evelyn.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“No. I was afraid.””
“And now?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Now I’m tired of being afraid.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You think Adrian will save you?””
She looked back at me.
“He couldn’t even save Emma.””
The words hit like a knife.
I moved toward her.
But Evelyn grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
I stopped.
Because she was right.
Vanessa wanted me angry.
Anger made people careless.
I took a breath.
Then looked directly at Vanessa.
“Where is Sophia?””
For the first time, her confidence cracked.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
The smallest hesitation.
And I knew.
She knew.
“Where is my daughter?””
Vanessa looked away.
“She’s not yours.””
My expression hardened.
“Enough.””
“You want proof?””
She pulled another document from the folder.
“This says Daniel Whitmore is the legal father.””
I stared.
Daniel.
Again.
The name that kept appearing everywhere.
“Why him?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Because unlike you, Daniel understood what I wanted.””
My blood ran cold.
“You worked with him.””
“Of course.””
The answer was casual.
Too casual.
“You think everything happened by accident?””
I felt sick.
The business rivalry.
The public fights.
The insults.
All of it.
A performance.
“He helped you?””
“He helped me create a future.””
I stepped closer.
“And what did he get?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your trust.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
“Daniel was never interested in destroying you.””
She smiled.
“He wanted what you had.””
I stared at her.
“The company?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Something more valuable.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Your family.””
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.
A message.
From Marcus.
*Sir, we found Sophia’s location.*
My heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
*But you need to come immediately. There is a problem.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She noticed.
“You found her.””
I didn’t answer.
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Something worse.
Confidence.
“You’re too late.””
I grabbed her arm.
“Where is she?””
She looked down at my hand.
Then back at me.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“She doesn’t want you.””
The words made me freeze.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“I told her about you.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What did you tell her?””
“The truth.””
“No.””
I knew immediately.
“You lied.””
Vanessa’s expression became cold.
“I told her her father chose another daughter.””
My heart broke.
“You told a child that?””
“She needed to know reality.””
“She needed her father.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She needed protection from you.””
I released her.
Not because I believed her.
Because I couldn’t stand touching her anymore.
“You are unbelievable.””
She smiled sadly.
“You’ll see.””
I turned toward the door.
I needed Sophia.
I needed Emma.
I needed to fix what I could.
But before I left, Vanessa spoke again.
“Adrian.””
I stopped.
Her voice was different.
Almost human.
Almost.
“Do you want to know why I really hid Emma?””
I slowly turned.
She held my gaze.
“Because she wasn’t the daughter I planned.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
Then back at me.
“Emma was supposed to die.””
The words drained the air from the room.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“No…”
I felt something break inside me.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa didn’t look away.
“I made arrangements before she was born.””
My hands went numb.
“You tried to kill my daughter?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I tried to erase a problem.””
A problem.
She called my child a problem.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to destroy everything around me.
But then I remembered Emma.
Her frightened eyes.
Her small voice asking if I hated her.
I couldn’t lose control.
Not now.
Not when my daughters needed me.
I turned away.
And walked toward the exit.
Behind me, Vanessa called out.
“You’ll never get them back.””
I stopped at the door.
“You’re wrong.””
She laughed quietly.
“You don’t even know where Sophia is.””
I looked back.
For the first time in years, Vanessa looked uncertain.
Because she knew something.
She knew I was no longer the man she controlled.
“You made one mistake.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“You forgot something.””
“What?””
I opened the door.
“A father doesn’t stop looking for his child.””
I walked into the rain.
And for the first time in twelve years…
I wasn’t searching for the truth.
I was coming for my daughters.
But when I reached the location Marcus sent me, I found the police already there.
The building was surrounded.
A firefighter stood outside.
And Marcus was waiting.
His face was pale.
I ran toward him.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
And the words that came next destroyed the hope I had just found.
“Mr. Cole…”
He swallowed.
“Sophia is inside.””
I stepped forward.
“Then get her out.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“Sir…”
My heart sank.
“What?””
His eyes moved toward the burning building behind him.
“She’s not alone.””
A scream echoed from inside.
A child’s scream.
May you like
And then Marcus whispered:
“Vanessa knew we were coming.””
