Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew The Truth
I read the message one more time.
Then I locked my phone.
Then I unlocked it and read it again.
Because some part of me still hoped the words would change.
They didn’t.
*Come alone if you want to meet the woman who knows why Vanessa stole your children.*
Underneath it was a name.
*Evelyn Hart.*
A woman everyone believed was dead.
Twelve years ago, Evelyn Hart had been Vanessa’s closest friend.
They went everywhere together.
Charity events.
Luxury vacations.
Business dinners.
People used to joke that they were sisters because they were never apart.
Until the night Sophia was born.
Then Evelyn disappeared.
Vanessa told everyone Evelyn had suffered a mental breakdown and left the city.
A year later, rumors spread that Evelyn had died in a car accident overseas.
Nobody questioned it.
Nobody except me.
Because I remembered Vanessa’s reaction when someone mentioned Evelyn’s name.
A brief flash of fear.
A moment so small most people would have missed it.
But I was a businessman.
I built my company by noticing tiny details.
And now I realized I had ignored the biggest one.
I had spent twelve years surrounded by evidence.
I just never looked closely enough.
“Marcus.””
My security chief turned from the window.
“Yes, sir?””
“I’m leaving.””
His expression changed.
“Where?””
I showed him the message.
He read it silently.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
I looked at him.
“No?””
“Sir, whoever sent this knows too much. They know about Sophia. They know about Vanessa. They know where to reach you.””
“I know.””
“That means it’s a trap.””
I placed the phone on the table.
“Maybe.””
Marcus frowned.
“Maybe?””
“Yes.””
I looked toward Emma.
She was asleep on the couch.
My jacket still wrapped around her.
“She spent ten years waiting for someone to save her.””
My voice became quieter.
“I spent ten years failing her.””
Marcus understood.
“This isn’t just about finding Sophia.””
“No.””
I looked back at the message.
“It’s about finding every piece of my family that was stolen.””
Marcus was silent for a moment.
Then he nodded.
“I’ll prepare the car.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Sir?””
“I’m going alone.””
His face hardened.
“That’s exactly what they want.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
“Because whoever is behind this wants me afraid.””
I picked up my coat.
“And I refuse to let them control me anymore.””
The meeting location was an abandoned restaurant on the edge of the city.
A place that had been closed for years.
The kind of place where secrets felt comfortable.
The rain had stopped, but the streets were still wet.
I parked outside and looked around.
Every instinct told me to turn back.
But I opened the door.
Inside, the restaurant smelled like dust and old wood.
The lights flickered.
“Hello?””
My voice echoed.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then a woman stepped out from the shadows.
She looked older than the photographs.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face carried years of pain.
But I knew her immediately.
“Evelyn.””
She stopped.
“You remember me.””
“I remember everyone who was part of destroying my life.””
Her expression changed.
Not anger.
Guilt.
“I deserve that.””
I stepped closer.
“Are you alive?””
“Yes.””
“Why did everyone think you were dead?””
She looked away.
“Because Vanessa wanted them to.””
My jaw tightened.
“Start talking.””
Evelyn sat down slowly.
“I knew Vanessa before she met you.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t know anything.””
The bitterness in her voice surprised me.
“Vanessa wasn’t the woman you think she was.””
“Then who was she?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Someone who learned early that people could be controlled if you knew what they wanted.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I knew that was true.
“Vanessa wanted your money,” Evelyn continued.
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not your money.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Your bloodline.””
The words unsettled me.
“What does that mean?””
“Vanessa grew up believing power was everything. She hated feeling invisible.””
She paused.
“When she met you, she saw the perfect opportunity.””
I clenched my fists.
“An opportunity?””
“To become untouchable.””
I stared at her.
“Why my children?””
Evelyn’s face changed.
Because she knew the answer would hurt.
“Because Vanessa discovered something about your family.””
“What?””
“Your father’s inheritance.””
I frowned.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
“Everything.””
My father had died when I was twenty-three.
He left me the foundation of my company.
But there was one thing nobody knew.
A private trust.
A trust created before my birth.
One that could only be passed to my biological children.
I had never discussed it publicly.
Only a handful of lawyers knew.
My stomach dropped.
“How did Vanessa know?””
Evelyn looked down.
“She found the documents.””
“When?””
“Before your wedding.””
I felt cold.
Before we married.
Before Olivia was born.
Vanessa had already been planning.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“She knew about the trust before she even loved me?””
Evelyn gave a sad smile.
“Adrian, Vanessa never loved you.””
The words hurt.
Even though I expected them.
Even though I knew.
Because hearing them from someone who knew the beginning was different.
I turned away.
“What happened with the twins?””
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“When Vanessa discovered she was having twins, she saw a problem.””
“A problem?””
“She wanted one child to be raised as the heir.””
I looked at her.
“Olivia.””
“Yes.””
“And Emma?””
“Emma was supposed to disappear.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa needed everyone to believe there was only one child.””
My voice became dangerous.
“She wanted Olivia to inherit everything.””
Evelyn nodded.
“But something went wrong.””
“What?””
“Emma survived.””
The answer made no sense.
“Survived?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Vanessa arranged for Emma to be placed somewhere else after birth.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
Her voice broke.
“I tried to stop her.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was scared.””
Evelyn accepted the accusation.
“Yes.””
She pulled something from her bag.
An old envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would need it.””
I took it.
Inside was a hospital document.
A birth record.
Two babies.
Twin girls.
The mother’s name:
Vanessa Cole.
The father:
Adrian Cole.
My hands shook.
For the first time, there was official proof.
They were mine.
Both of them.
Then I saw another document.
A transfer order.
My eyes moved across the page.
And stopped.
“What is this?””
Evelyn looked away.
“The reason Vanessa never worried about Emma finding you.””
I read the paper.
A legal guardianship transfer.
Signed twelve years ago.
The child’s temporary guardian:
*Daniel Whitmore.*
My blood ran cold.
“No.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“Daniel took Emma?””
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“Daniel wasn’t trying to steal your daughter.””
I stared at her.
“Then what was he doing?””
Evelyn whispered:
“He was trying to protect her from Vanessa.””
The room became silent.
Everything I believed about Daniel changed.
The enemy.
The rival.
The man I thought helped destroy my family.
Maybe he was part of saving it.
But before I could ask another question, the lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness.
A crash sounded from the back of the restaurant.
Evelyn stood instantly.
“No.””
“What?””
Her face turned pale.
“He found us.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the entrance.
Then whispered:
“Vanessa.””
The door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Wearing a black coat.
Holding a folder in her hand.
Her face was calm.
Almost peaceful.
Like she wasn’t standing in the middle of the biggest betrayal of my life.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“Adrian.””
My blood froze.
“I was wondering how long it would take you to finally discover the truth.””
She lifted the folder.
Inside was a document.
“One problem.””
She took a step forward.
“You’re looking for daughters that don’t belong to you anymore.””
I stared at her.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
May you like
And she whispered:
“I made sure the law would never recognize them as yours.””
