Chapter 8: The Person We Trusted Most

The name on the key tag made my entire body go cold.

Jessica Miller.

I picked it up slowly.

My mind raced.

Why would Jessica’s name be on a key?

Why would someone leave this for me?

I walked back upstairs and woke my mother.

“Mom.””

She opened her eyes immediately.

“What happened?””

I showed her the key.

Her expression changed.

“Where did you find that?””

“Kitchen floor.””

She sat up.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

She looked at the key carefully.

“Because I gave that key to Jessica.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Months ago.””

My confusion grew.

“Why would you give Jessica a key?””

My mother looked uncomfortable.

“Because I trusted her.””

The words hurt.

Everyone trusted her.

She had been invited to birthdays.

She had played with Lily.

She had sat in our home.

“She helped me organize your father’s old things after we cleaned the attic.””

I looked at the key again.

“What did she have access to?””

My mother became quiet.

Then she answered.

“The study.””

My chest tightened.

My father’s study.

The room we rarely used anymore.

The room where important documents had been stored.

The room where the trust paperwork might be.

I went downstairs immediately.

The study door was locked.

I tried the key.

It opened.

The room smelled like old books and wood.

Everything looked untouched.

But something felt wrong.

I walked to the desk.

Drawers were slightly open.

Files had been moved.

My mother came behind me.

“She was looking for something.””

I nodded.

“Something about Lily.””

We searched carefully.

Then my mother found a folder behind a row of books.

She opened it.

Inside were copies of documents.

My father’s handwriting was on the first page.

I read slowly.

The trust was real.

But there was something else.

A condition.

My father had added a protection clause.

The money could only be accessed by Lily’s legal guardian if that person could prove they were acting in her best interest.

My mother looked at me.

“Your father knew.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She pointed to the date.

The document had been updated two years before his death.

“He was worried about something.””

I looked closer.

At the bottom was a note.

*Protect Lily from anyone who sees her as an opportunity.*

My stomach turned.

Someone had been planning around my daughter’s future for years.

But there was more.

Behind the document was a photograph.

A picture from five years ago.

The day Lily was born.

I recognized everyone.

Me.

Vanessa.

My parents.

And Jessica.

But there was something strange.

Jessica wasn’t smiling.

She was looking at Vanessa.

Like they shared a secret.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

*You found the documents. Good. Now find the original video.*

I looked at my mother.

“Someone is helping us.””

She shook her head.

“Or someone is leading us somewhere.””

That thought stayed with me.

Because she was right.

We didn’t know who we could trust anymore.

The next morning, I received another message.

This time, there was an address.

No explanation.

Just a location.

And one sentence.

*Come alone if you want the truth about Lily’s first year.*

I stared at the screen.

Lily’s first year.

The year Vanessa never liked talking about.

The year she always said was “complicated.””

I knew I should have ignored it.

I knew walking into a stranger’s trap alone was dangerous.

But there was one thing I couldn’t ignore.

Someone knew something about my daughter’s past.

Something Vanessa had hidden.

I arrived at the address twenty minutes later.

It was an old office building on the edge of town.

The hallway was empty.

At the end of the hall was a single door.

I knocked.

Nothing.

I knocked again.

Then the door slowly opened.

A woman stood there.

I recognized her immediately.

She was someone I had seen once before.

Someone from the hospital.

Someone who had been there the day Lily was born.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I’ve been waiting for you.””

I stepped back.

“Who are you?””

She looked over her shoulder.

May you like

Then whispered:

“I’m the reason Vanessa never wanted you to know what happened the night Lily was born.””
