Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Expected

The screen on my mother’s tablet showed the backyard.

But it wasn’t today’s lunch.

It was footage from three weeks earlier.

I stood beside the table, confused.

“Mom, what is this?””

Evelyn looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you sooner.””

Vanessa took a step back.

“No.””

Her voice was different now.

Not angry.

Afraid.

My mother pressed play.

The video showed our living room.

Lily was sitting on the floor coloring.

Her stuffed bunny was beside her.

Vanessa walked into the room.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then Lily looked up.

“Mommy, can I show Daddy my drawing?””

Vanessa stopped.

“You don’t need to show him everything.””

Lily lowered the paper.

“But Daddy likes my pictures.””

Vanessa smiled.

But it wasn’t a kind smile.

It was the same expression I had seen at lunch.

“You always run to your father.””

The video continued.

Everyone at the table watched silently.

Lily hugged her bunny.

“I love Daddy.””

Vanessa looked down at her.

“And you think he loves you more than me?””

My stomach turned.

“That’s not fair,” I whispered.

Vanessa heard me.

She stepped toward the tablet.

“You recorded me?””

My mother stood between us.

“I recorded what was happening in my own son’s house because I was worried about my granddaughter.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“So now I’m being attacked?””

Nobody answered.

The video kept playing.

Another scene appeared.

This time it was in the kitchen.

Lily was reaching for a glass of water.

Vanessa’s voice came from behind the camera.

“You are becoming spoiled.””

Lily turned around.

“I’m not.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Don’t argue with me.””

The video ended.

The backyard remained silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Is this what you’ve been doing when I’m not around?””

She shook her head quickly.

“You’re misunderstanding everything.””

My mother stepped forward.

“No. You are trying to make everyone misunderstand.””

Vanessa looked at her with hatred.

“You’ve always hated me.””

My mother’s expression hardened.

“I wanted to believe you were just struggling. I wanted to believe there was an explanation.””

She pointed toward Lily, who was standing near the back door wrapped in a towel.

“But today, you did it in front of everyone.””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

For one second, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she sighed.

“This family has always treated me like an outsider.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You poured juice on a child, and somehow you’re the victim?””

Her eyes flashed.

“You don’t understand what it’s like being replaced.””

The words stopped me.

“Replaced?””

Vanessa looked away.

Then she said something that made everyone uncomfortable.

“Ever since Lily came into my life, I stopped being the most important person in this house.””

I stared at her.

Because that wasn’t frustration.

That was resentment.

Against a five-year-old.

My mother quietly walked toward Lily.

“Sweetheart, why don’t you go upstairs with Grandma for a minute?””

Lily nodded.

But before she left, she looked back at Vanessa.

And the sadness in her eyes almost destroyed me.

“Mommy doesn’t like me.””

Vanessa immediately responded.

“That’s not true.””

But Lily stepped behind my mother.

Children don’t say things like that without a reason.

After Lily disappeared upstairs, I faced my wife.

“We need to talk.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Fine.””

“No. We need to talk about everything.””

She looked nervous again.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I’m going to find out what happened in this house when I wasn’t here.””

Her face changed.

“What are you accusing me of?””

I didn’t answer.

Because at that moment, I didn’t know.

But my mother did.

She walked back to the table and picked up another envelope.

“I found something else.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

My mother looked at me.

“I didn’t want to show you this unless I had proof.””

She handed me the envelope.

My hands felt heavy as I opened it.

Inside was a printed message.

A conversation between Vanessa and someone saved under a name I didn’t recognize.

I read the first line.

Then the second.

Then I felt my entire body go cold.

Because the person Vanessa had been talking to wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been inside our home.

May you like

Someone Lily trusted.

And the next message revealed exactly what Vanessa had been planning.
