Chapter 4: The Secret They Were Hiding

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Jessica stood near the front door with her purse hanging from her shoulder.

Vanessa held the suitcase.

My wife no longer looked angry.

She looked defeated.

But I had learned something that day.

A guilty person could look hurt too.

“Jessica,” I said slowly.

“What are you doing here?””

She glanced at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“I think you deserve the truth.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Jessica ignored her.

“That’s why she’s been acting this way.””

My jaw tightened.

“Acting how?””

Jessica hesitated.

“Like she’s trying to get Lily away from you.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“Explain.””

Jessica took a deep breath.

“Vanessa never wanted to be a mother.””

“That’s a lie,” Vanessa whispered.

Jessica shook her head.

“No, Vanessa. It’s time.””

I felt confused.

Angry.

Lost.

“What are you talking about?””

Jessica looked at the stairs.

“Before Lily was born, Vanessa told me she was afraid your life would change.””

“That’s normal,” I said.

“Being afraid is normal,” Jessica replied.

“But what she did afterward wasn’t.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Stop.””

Jessica continued.

“She said she loved you. But she hated that after Lily arrived, you weren’t focused only on her anymore.””

I looked at Vanessa.

The words from earlier came back.

Ever since Lily came into my life, I stopped being the most important person.

My stomach sank.

“How long?””

Jessica looked down.

“Almost from the beginning.””

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

“You promised you wouldn’t tell.””

I froze.

“You promised?””

Jessica pulled away.

“That was before today.””

I stepped closer.

“What else was there?””

Nobody answered.

Then Jessica reached into her purse.

She pulled out her phone.

“There’s a video.””

Vanessa’s face went white.

“No.””

Jessica pressed play.

The recording showed a restaurant.

Vanessa and Jessica were sitting across from each other.

It was months earlier.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

But her words were clear.

“I made a mistake.””

Jessica looked shocked.

“Don’t say that.””

“I love him.””

“Then why are you talking like this?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because everything changed after Lily.””

The video continued.

“I miss when he only needed me.””

Jessica sighed.

“She’s his daughter.””

“I know.””

“Then what do you want?””

Vanessa was quiet for a long time.

Then she said:

“I want things to go back.””

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Please listen.””

I shook my head.

“I have been listening for months.””

She started crying.

“I was struggling.””

“You should have told me.””

“I was embarrassed.””

“You hurt our daughter.””

Her tears fell faster.

“I never meant to hurt her.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Intent doesn’t erase damage.””

My mother stood behind me.

“She needs help, but Lily needs safety.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“So you’re leaving me?””

I looked at her.

The woman I had married.

The woman I once trusted with my entire life.

“I don’t know what happens next.””

Her expression changed.

Because she realized something.

For the first time, I wasn’t trying to save the marriage.

I was trying to protect my child.

Vanessa picked up her suitcase.

Then she stopped at the door.

“You’re going to regret this.””

I didn’t answer.

She walked outside with Jessica.

The door closed.

And for the first time in months, my house became quiet.

But the silence didn’t last.

Ten minutes later, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Are you Lily’s father?””

I frowned.

“Yes. Who is this?””

There was a pause.

Then the man said:

“My name is Daniel. I worked with Vanessa six months ago.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What does this have to do with my daughter?””

The man lowered his voice.

“Everything.””

I looked toward Lily’s room.

“Tell me.””

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your wife wasn’t trying to leave your daughter behind.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Then what was she trying to do?””

The man answered with five words.

May you like

And those words changed everything.

“She was trying to take her.””
