Chapter 6: The Evidence Against Me
Vanessa looked completely different from the woman I had seen crying the night before.
She was calm.
Prepared.
Almost confident.
The lawyer beside her opened a folder.
I sat across from them.
“What is this?””
Vanessa folded her hands.
“A conversation we need to have.””
I looked at the folder.
“No. This is a setup.””
The lawyer spoke for the first time.
“My name is Robert Hayes. I represent Mrs. Carter.””
Mrs. Carter.
The words bothered me.
Because Vanessa was already acting like this was a legal battle.
Not a marriage falling apart.
Not a family crisis.
A battle.
“I’m not here to fight you,” Vanessa said.
I looked at her.
“Then why is your lawyer here?””
She didn’t answer.
Robert opened the folder.
“There are concerns regarding your parenting.””
I almost smiled.
“Concerns?””
“Yes.””
“What concerns?””
He placed papers on the table.
“Mr. Carter, your wife has documented several incidents where you displayed aggressive behavior.””
I looked down.
The first page described an argument from months ago.
I remembered it.
I had raised my voice because Vanessa had forgotten to pick Lily up from preschool.
She wrote that I was intimidating.
The second page described another disagreement.
The third.
Another.
All ordinary moments.
All twisted.
“She recorded every argument?””
Vanessa looked away.
“She was building a case.””
The lawyer corrected me.
“She was keeping records.””
“No.””
I pushed the papers back.
“She was creating evidence.””
Robert remained expressionless.
“That is your interpretation.””
I leaned forward.
“My wife poured juice on our daughter yesterday.””
His face changed slightly.
But Vanessa answered quickly.
“That was a misunderstanding.””
I stared at her.
“A misunderstanding?””
“You grabbed me.””
“You’re talking about after you hurt Lily.””
She looked around the café.
People were starting to notice.
Then she lowered her voice.
“You hit me.””
The words hung between us.
I felt every eye turn.
And I realized exactly what she was doing.
Changing the story.
Making the first sentence about me.
Not her.
I sat back.
“You planned this.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“I planned to protect myself.””
“From what?””
She looked at me.
“From you.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
Then Robert pushed another document forward.
“This is a temporary custody proposal.””
I looked down.
My heart sank.
The proposal gave Vanessa primary custody.
I would have limited visitation.
“Absolutely not.””
Vanessa whispered:
“If you cooperate, this can be peaceful.””
I looked at her.
“Peaceful?””
“Yes.””
“You mean if I let you take my daughter?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You always make everything dramatic.””
I stared at the woman across from me.
The woman who had once promised to love my child.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
From my mother.
I opened it.
There was a video attachment.
And one sentence.
*I found something else. Watch this before you answer her.*
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at the lawyer.
“I need a minute.””
I stepped away from the table.
My hands shook as I opened the video.
It was from a security camera.
Not my house.
Somewhere else.
A parking lot.
Vanessa was standing beside a car.
Talking to someone.
I zoomed in.
My heart stopped.
The person standing beside her was Daniel Brooks.
But he wasn’t alone.
There was another person with them.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who had been in our home.
Someone who had hugged Lily.
Then the audio started.
And I heard Vanessa say:
“Once he loses custody, everything will finally be mine.””
I stopped breathing.
Because I finally understood.
This was never just about Lily.
May you like
Vanessa had another reason for destroying our family.
And the person standing beside her knew exactly why.
