Chapter 8: The Truth My Daughter Deserved

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not even for a minute.

I sat in the living room while my daughters slept upstairs.

The house felt different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same family pictures.

But everything looked like a lie.

Every memory I had with Vanessa felt like a question.

How long had she known?

How long had she planned?

How long had Nia been carrying pain I never saw?

The next morning, I made one decision.

I was going to find the truth.

Not Vanessa’s version.

Not someone else’s version.

The truth.

Michael arranged a meeting at a quiet park outside the city.

A place where there were people around, but enough privacy to talk.

I brought Nia.

Not because she needed to be involved in adult problems.

But because someone had spent years making choices about her life without allowing her to have a voice.

She deserved answers.

When we arrived, Nia held my hand tightly.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Are we meeting someone important?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

I took a breath.

“Someone who has been thinking about you for a long time.””

Her eyes widened.

“Who?””

Before I could answer, a woman appeared near the walking path.

She stopped when she saw Nia.

And immediately covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

I knew.

Even before she spoke.

Even before she said the name.

“Daniel…”

My daughter looked at me.

The woman slowly walked closer.

“Nia.””

The sound of her name from that woman’s mouth made my daughter step back.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she didn’t understand.

The woman looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

My voice was quiet.

“You should have told me.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I tried.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“After the accident, I lost my memory for a while.””

I froze.

“Memory?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t know where I came from.””

My chest tightened.

“I was told my family was gone.””

“Who told you?””

Her eyes lowered.

“Someone who found me.””

A terrible feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Vanessa.””

The world became silent again.

Nia looked between us.

“Daddy…”

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, this is…”

I stopped.

Because I didn’t know how to say it.

How do you introduce a child to the mother she thought was gone?

The woman took a shaky breath.

“I’m your mommy.””

Nia stared.

No emotion.

No reaction.

Just confusion.

“I have a mommy.””

The woman’s face broke.

“I know.””

“My mommy is Vanessa.””

My heart hurt hearing that.

Because Nia wasn’t wrong.

That was the only mother she knew.

The woman nodded.

“I know she raised you.””

Nia looked down.

“Then why did you leave?””

The question was simple.

But it destroyed the woman.

“I didn’t.””

Nia looked up.

“I waited for you.””

The woman covered her face.

“I looked for you.””

I watched my daughter process those words.

Then she asked the question that broke all of us.

“Why didn’t you come get me?””

The woman cried.

“Because I didn’t know where you were.””

I looked away.

Because I knew.

Someone had made sure she didn’t know.

Someone had controlled every piece of information.

And that someone was my wife.

My phone suddenly rang.

It was Michael.

I answered.

“What happened?””

His voice was urgent.

“Daniel, you need to come back home.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Vanessa found out you met her.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

Another pause.

“Because she just filed an emergency claim saying you are emotionally unstable and trying to remove Nia from a safe home.””

I went completely still.

The same story.

The same lie.

Just a different target.

I looked at my daughter.

At her mother.

At the woman who had been searching for her.

Then I heard Michael say the words that changed everything.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“We found the original report from the accident.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What report?””

“The one Vanessa used to convince everyone your wife was gone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Michael…”

“Yes?””

“Whose signature is on it?””

May you like

His answer came quietly.

“Your wife’s.””
