Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew Vanessa’s Secret

The stranger stood at my doorway holding a folder against his chest.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Vanessa.

Not even the girls upstairs.

The man looked to be in his early fifties, wearing a simple gray jacket and carrying himself with the quiet seriousness of someone who had walked into difficult situations before.

“Daniel Carter?”” he asked again.

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

He took a breath.

“My name is Michael Reynolds. I work with family placement services.””

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

I noticed immediately.

“You know him?”” I asked.

She shook her head too quickly.

“No.””

Michael looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter, you know exactly why I’m here.””

My stomach tightened.

Family placement services.

Those words echoed in my head.

I stepped outside and closed the door halfway behind me.

“What is going on?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“I wish I didn’t have to tell you this at your front door.””

“Tell me.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were several papers.

Not documents.

Not legal threats.

Records.

“Three weeks ago, we received an inquiry about placing your daughter with another guardian.””

My entire body went cold.

“Nia?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked back toward the house.

My daughter.

My little girl.

Someone had been making plans for her future without me.

“How?””

Michael lowered his voice.

“The request came from someone claiming to be her legal caregiver.””

I stared at him.

“Her legal caregiver?””

He nodded.

“Your wife.””

My hands curled into fists.

“She told you she had permission?””

“She stated that you were aware and that you were considering alternative arrangements.””

A bitter laugh escaped from my mouth.

“She lied.””

Michael didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

His silence confirmed what I already knew.

“How far did this go?””

He looked down at the papers.

“She provided information about Nia’s behavior, school situation, and home environment.””

My heart sank.

“What kind of information?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he answered.

“She described your daughter as emotionally unstable and difficult to manage.””

I closed my eyes.

The same words.

The same cruel idea.

My daughter wasn’t a child who needed love.

She was a problem to remove.

“What else?””

Michael flipped through the pages.

“She also mentioned that you were often absent due to work and that she was the primary parent.””

I looked toward the living room.

Vanessa had spent years building a story where she was the only person protecting my child.

While secretly trying to take her away.

“Did you believe her?””

Michael looked at me.

“At first, we investigate every request seriously.””

“And now?””

He glanced inside the house.

“At this point, we need to review everything.””

I looked down.

“Why did you come here tonight?””

His expression softened.

“Because after reviewing the information submitted, something didn’t add up.””

“What?””

“Some of the details she provided contradicted school records.””

I frowned.

“What details?””

Michael opened another page.

“She claimed Nia had frequent behavioral problems.””

My chest tightened.

“Nia?””

“Yes.””

“She’s never been suspended. Never been in trouble.””

“That’s what we found.””

He paused.

“Her teachers describe her as quiet, respectful, and unusually considerate.””

I looked away.

Because I knew exactly why.

My daughter had been trying so hard to be good.

So good that she disappeared inside herself.

Michael continued.

“And there was another concern.””

“What?””

“The financial information.””

I looked at him.

“What financial information?””

“He mentioned expenses related to Nia.””

My jaw tightened.

“Who?””

He corrected himself.

“She mentioned expenses.””

Vanessa.

“She provided statements showing she was struggling financially because of Nia’s needs.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“She spent my daughter’s money.””

Michael looked surprised.

“She told us she had no access to sufficient funds.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“Come inside.””

I opened the door.

Vanessa was standing in the hallway.

She had been listening.

Of course she had.

Michael looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter, I think we need to have a serious conversation.””

She shook her head.

“This is a misunderstanding.””

“No,” I said.

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“This is the first time I’m actually understanding what happened.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“You tried to convince strangers that my daughter shouldn’t live here.””

“That’s not what I did.””

“You secretly planned where she would go.””

“I was trying to help.””

“By removing her?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You don’t understand what it’s like.””

“What?””

“To raise a child who isn’t yours.””

The words came out.

And immediately, she realized what she had said.

Michael looked down.

I looked at Vanessa.

Because that was the truth she had hidden.

She never saw Nia as hers.

Not even after all these years.

Upstairs, I heard footsteps.

Nia appeared on the stairs again.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Daddy?””

I walked toward her.

“Yes?””

“Am I really leaving?””

I knelt.

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But Mommy said nobody wanted me.””

I felt like the air had been knocked out of my chest.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

And that was when I made a decision.

A decision I should have made much earlier.

“Pack a small bag,” I told Nia.

Her face changed.

Fear appeared instantly.

“Why?””

I held her hands.

“Because you and Lily are staying somewhere safe tonight.””

Her eyes widened.

“Are you coming?””

I looked at my daughter.

“Yes.””

For the first time all day, I saw a tiny bit of relief in her face.

But then Michael’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Wait…”

He looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then his face became serious.

“Send me the file.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“The person who contacted us wasn’t the only one.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

He opened a new message.

“There was another request.””

“From who?””

He looked at me.

“Someone claiming to be Nia’s biological relative.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael slowly turned the phone toward me.

A name appeared on the screen.

May you like

And I recognized it immediately.

Because it was someone who was supposed to be gone forever.
