Chapter 4: The Daughter Who Heard Everything
Nia stood frozen on the stairs.
The envelope shook slightly in her small hand.
I walked toward her immediately.
“Sweetheart.””
She looked at me.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
“I wasn’t trying to listen.””
I shook my head.
“You’re not in trouble.””
She looked down.
“I just wanted to know if it was true.””
My heart sank.
“What was true?””
She slowly walked down the stairs.
Then she handed me the envelope.
“I found it in Mommy’s closet.””
Vanessa’s face turned white.
“Nia, you shouldn’t touch things that aren’t yours.””
The anger in her voice made my daughter flinch.
I stepped between them.
“Don’t talk to her like that.””
Vanessa stopped.
That was the first time I had ever seen her back away from an argument.
Because she knew.
The truth was no longer hidden.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a printed letter.
My eyes moved across the page.
The words became harder to read with every line.
It was written to Vanessa’s sister.
“Rachel, I need you to be prepared. After the paperwork is finalized, Nia will stay with you temporarily. Daniel will eventually accept that this is the easiest solution.””
I stopped breathing for a second.
Easiest solution.
My daughter.
My little girl.
Was a solution to her.
I continued reading.
“She is becoming too attached to Daniel, and it makes things complicated. Once she is gone, we can focus on building a normal family with Lily.””
My hand tightened around the paper.
Vanessa reached toward me.
“Let me explain.””
I looked up.
“Explain what?””
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.””
That sentence hurt more than an apology would have.
Because it meant she wasn’t sorry.
She was sorry she got caught.
Nia’s voice came quietly.
“Daddy…”
I turned.
“Yes?””
“Am I leaving?””
My heart shattered.
I immediately knelt beside her.
“No.””
“But Mommy said—”
“I don’t care what she said.””
“But she’s my mommy.””
The pain in her voice was unbearable.
She wasn’t asking me to hate Vanessa.
She was trying to understand why someone who was supposed to love her wanted her gone.
I held her hands.
“Listen to me. You are my daughter. This is your home.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“Even if I’m not perfect?””
I froze.
“What?””
Nia looked away.
“Mom says I make everything harder.””
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Because suddenly all the small things made sense.
The quietness.
The fear of asking for shoes.
The way she always apologized when she needed something.
I had thought she was just shy.
She wasn’t.
She was trying not to become a burden.
I pulled her into my arms.
“You are not a burden.””
Vanessa watched us.
And something about her expression changed.
For a moment, I thought maybe she finally understood what she had done.
Then she spoke.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I slowly stood.
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at the letter.
“You think this proves everything, but you don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
She stayed silent.
“Tell me why you were planning to send my daughter away.””
Her eyes moved toward Lily’s room.
Then back to me.
“Because I was protecting my own daughter.””
I frowned.
“From what?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said something I never expected.
“From losing everything when you realize Nia is the only reason you still think about your first wife.””
The words stunned me.
Not because they were true.
Because they showed how long Vanessa had been carrying this resentment.
She wasn’t just trying to remove Nia.
She was trying to erase a memory.
A person.
A piece of my life she couldn’t control.
Before I could respond, there was a loud knock at the front door.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa looked terrified.
I walked toward the entrance.
“Who is it?””
A man’s voice came from the other side.
“Daniel Carter?””
I opened the door.
A stranger stood there holding a folder.
He looked at me seriously.
“I’m sorry to show up like this.””
He glanced toward Vanessa.
“But I think you need to know what your wife has been doing with your daughter’s information.””
Vanessa took a step back.
And for the first time that night, she looked completely defeated.
May you like
Because she knew exactly who he was.
And she knew what he had brought with him.
