Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Missing Money

I had spent years believing I was protecting my family.

I worked long hours.

I took extra projects.

I stayed late at the office because I wanted my daughters to have a comfortable life.

After Nia’s mother passed away, I promised myself that my little girl would never feel alone.

When I married Vanessa three years later, I thought I had found someone who understood that promise.

She was kind.

Patient.

Warm.

At least, that was what I thought.

Now I was standing in my own house, staring at the woman I trusted, wondering how much of it had been an illusion.

“Lily,” I said carefully, “come here.””

The little girl walked over slowly.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.””

I raised my hand.

“Let her speak.””

Vanessa stopped.

Lily looked between us.

“Mom said Nia was going to another house tomorrow.””

Nia’s face changed.

She looked terrified.

I immediately pulled her closer.

“Another house?””

Lily nodded.

“She said Nia was too expensive.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Lily, you misunderstood.””

But Lily frowned.

“No, Mommy. You told Aunt Rachel that Daddy wouldn’t notice.””

The silence that followed felt heavy.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is Aunt Rachel?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I had seen Vanessa lie before.

But never like this.

Never while my daughter stood there looking confused and scared.

I walked into the kitchen and picked up my phone.

“Don’t do this,” Vanessa said.

I turned around.

“Do what?””

“Make me the villain because a child misunderstood something.””

I stared at her.

“My daughter’s shoes are falling apart.””

Her expression hardened.

“That doesn’t mean anything.””

“She said you used money meant for her.””

“I manage this household.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Vanessa looked away.

That small movement told me more than words could.

I walked toward the counter.

“Where are the receipts?””

She froze.

“What?””

“The purchases made with the money I transferred for Nia.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’re checking up on me now?””

“I’m asking where my daughter’s money went.””

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then Vanessa sighed.

“You’re being dramatic.””

“No. I’m being a father.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

And they hurt because they were true.

I had been so focused on providing for my children that I failed to notice what was happening inside my own home.

Nia quietly stepped closer.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

“Yes?””

“Did I do something wrong?””

That question destroyed me.

Because it meant she had started believing this was her fault.

I knelt beside her again.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But Mommy gets upset when I ask for things.””

I swallowed.

“What things?””

She hesitated.

“Food sometimes.””

My chest tightened.

“Food?””

“She says Lily needs more because she’s younger.””

I looked toward the living room.

Lily was sitting on the couch, hugging her stuffed animal.

My two daughters.

One treated like a priority.

One treated like a burden.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“How long has this been happening?””

She crossed her arms.

“You’re acting like I’m abusing her.””

“I didn’t say that.””

“You’re thinking it.””

I looked at my daughter’s old shoes by the door.

Then at the expensive items around the house.

Then back at my wife.

“I’m thinking I don’t know you anymore.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely shaken.

But before she could respond, my phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

I opened it.

My entire body went cold.

There was a photo attached.

A photo of a document.

And at the top was my daughter’s name.

Nia Carter.

Underneath it were words that made my hands start trembling.

“Temporary guardianship transfer agreement.””

I looked up slowly.

Vanessa was watching my face.

And she knew.

She knew I had found something.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked.

Her lips parted.

“Wait…”

May you like

My voice became quieter.

“Why is my daughter’s name on a document about leaving this house?””
