Chapter 8: The Betrayal Within The Betrayal
The moment Daniel said his name, everything inside me went numb.
Mark.
Standing outside my house.
After everything.
After lying to me.
After using me.
After telling me Ethan was hiding secrets.
I thought I understood him.
But now I realized I never knew him at all.
Daniel moved away from the window.
“Everyone stay away from the front of the house.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Mark is here, he wants to be seen.””
Ethan’s voice came through the phone.
“Daniel is right.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course Ethan was right.
Again.
The man I betrayed was the one trying to protect me.
“What do we do?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
That worried me.
“Ethan?””
“Claire, listen carefully.””
His voice was serious.
“Do not open the door.””
“I wasn’t planning to.””
“Do not talk to him.””
“Why?””
“Because Mark doesn’t do anything without a reason.””
I looked toward the hallway.
The same hallway where Mark had walked months earlier.
The same place where I believed I was finally being seen.
Now every memory felt poisoned.
The front doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Nobody moved.
Then Mark called my name.
“Claire.””
His voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
“Claire, I know you’re inside.””
I stepped back.
Daniel raised his hand, telling me not to speak.
Mark continued.
“I know Ethan told you everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“He didn’t tell me everything,” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
I ignored him.
Because Mark was right outside.
And somehow, he knew.
Mark knocked again.
“Claire, you need to understand something.””
I listened.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
The words almost made me angry.
Almost.
“You used me,” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me sharply.
Mark heard.
“I didn’t use you.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Then what was I?””
Silence.
Then Mark answered.
“You were the only person who could get close enough.””
My blood ran cold.
Close enough to what?
Daniel moved closer.
“Don’t answer him.””
But Mark continued.
“Claire, your father left something behind.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
Mark’s voice lowered.
“Something everyone has been searching for.””
My heart raced.
“What are you talking about?””
“Your father trusted your mother with it.””
I looked toward the old family photo on the wall.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“And she hid it before she died.””
I felt dizzy.
My mother had died when I was young.
Everyone said it was an accident.
A sudden illness.
A tragedy.
But now nothing felt certain.
“What did she hide?””
Mark didn’t answer.
Instead, he said:
“The same thing Ethan’s father killed people to protect.””
The room went silent.
Ethan’s voice came through the phone.
“Claire, step away from the door.””
I didn’t move.
Because there was one question burning inside me.
“Mark.””
“Yes?””
“Did you ever care about me?””
The silence was longer this time.
And somehow, that silence answered everything.
Finally, he said:
“I did.””
I closed my eyes.
“But that wasn’t why I came into your life.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Daniel reached for the phone on the table.
“We need to call the police.””
Before he could, the power suddenly went out.
The house became dark.
My heart jumped.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked around.
“Everyone stay still.””
Outside, Mark’s voice disappeared.
The silence was worse.
Then something moved near the back entrance.
A shadow.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
But before he reached the door, a voice came from the darkness.
“Claire?””
Not Mark.
Someone else.
A woman.
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
It was the same voice from the phone.
Evelyn Carter.
A woman who was supposed to be connected to Ethan’s dead father.
A woman who knew my father.
A woman who claimed she knew the truth.
The lights suddenly returned.
Standing near the back doorway was an elderly woman holding a small box.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were full of fear.
She looked directly at me.
Then she said the words that changed my entire understanding of my family.
“Claire Bennett…”
She swallowed.
“Your father didn’t run away.””
I couldn’t speak.
She held the box tighter.
“He died trying to protect you.””
The room went silent.
Then she looked at Ethan through the phone camera.
May you like
And whispered:
“You need to tell her what really happened the night her father died.””
