Chapter 3: The Secret I Thought Was Buried
For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
Daniel stood across from me holding the identification card that destroyed the fantasy I had carefully built.
Private investigator.
Not landscaper.
Not a stranger who had accidentally walked into my life.
A man Ethan hired because he already suspected something was wrong.
I stared at Daniel.
Then I looked toward the small camera attached to his chest.
“No,” I whispered.
The word barely left my mouth.
“No, this isn’t real.””
Daniel’s expression remained calm.
“I understand why you’d say that.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You came here pretending to be someone else.””
“Yes.””
My anger rose quickly.
“You’re the one who deceived me.””
Daniel didn’t react.
“Mrs. Carter, I was hired to document the truth. I didn’t create the situation.””
Those words hurt because they were true.
I turned away.
My mind raced through every possibility.
How long had Ethan known?
How much had he seen?
How much had he heard?
I grabbed the edge of the counter.
“Ethan…”
Daniel touched his earpiece.
“Do you want to talk to him?””
I froze.
For months, I had imagined Ethan finding out.
But every version I imagined was different.
I thought I would have time to explain.
Time to create a reason.
Time to make him understand why I did what I did.
I never imagined him sitting silently somewhere, watching everything without me knowing.
Daniel pressed a button.
The silence in the kitchen became unbearable.
Then I heard Ethan’s voice.
“Why?””
One word.
That was all.
But it broke something inside me.
I closed my eyes.
“Ethan…”
“No,” he said quietly.
There was no anger in his voice.
That almost made it worse.
“Just answer one question.””
I swallowed.
“What?””
“Was any of it real?””
I looked around the kitchen.
The expensive cabinets.
The family photos on the walls.
The home we built together.
My throat tightened.
“Yes.””
The answer came quickly.
Because some part of me still believed it.
“Yes, Ethan. It was real.””
A painful silence followed.
“Then why?””
I had asked myself that question so many times.
But hearing it from him was different.
“I felt alone.””
The moment I said it, I knew how weak it sounded.
Ethan laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe it.
“Alone?””
His voice cracked slightly.
“I came home every night.””
“I know.””
“I canceled business trips.””
“I know.””
“I planned weekends around you.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me, Claire. When exactly did I leave you alone?””
I had no answer.
Because the truth was uncomfortable.
Ethan had been there.
Maybe not perfectly.
Maybe not every second.
But he had been there.
I looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel watched silently.
The camera kept recording.
Every pause.
Every expression.
Every excuse.
Ethan breathed slowly.
“Who is he?””
I closed my eyes.
I knew that question was coming.
But I still wasn’t ready.
“His name is Mark.””
The silence afterward felt endless.
“Mark?””
I heard the pain in Ethan’s voice.
“You mean Mark Reynolds?””
I opened my eyes.
“You know him?””
“Everyone in my company knows him.””
My heart sank.
I hadn’t expected that.
Ethan continued.
“He was the consultant I introduced you to last year.””
I looked away.
That memory suddenly felt different.
Mark had always been charming.
Confident.
He knew exactly what to say.
At first, he was just someone who listened.
Someone who asked questions.
Someone who made me feel interesting again.
Then conversations became longer.
Meetings became excuses.
And eventually, the line disappeared.
“I never planned for it to happen,” I whispered.
Ethan answered immediately.
“But it did.””
The simplicity of his response hurt more than yelling would have.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mr. Carter, I think we have enough footage.””
“No.””
Daniel paused.
“No?””
Ethan’s voice became firmer.
“Not yet.””
I looked at the camera.
“What else do you want?””
No answer came immediately.
Then Ethan spoke.
“I want to know how far it went.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“Was it just messages?””
I stayed silent.
“Was it just meetings?””
I couldn’t move.
“Or did you already decide our marriage was over?””
Tears filled my eyes.
Not because I was innocent.
Because I realized something.
I had spent months believing I was escaping an unhappy marriage.
But Ethan had spent months watching the woman he loved slowly leave him.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
The words sounded too small.
Too late.
Daniel looked at me.
“Sorry doesn’t explain everything.””
I wiped my face.
“You don’t know what happened between us.””
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
“No.””
He looked at the camera.
“But your husband does.””
The call ended.
The kitchen became silent again.
I stood there alone with the man who had exposed me.
But then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I watched his face carefully.
Something was wrong.
“Mr. Carter…”
He paused.
Then looked at me.
“Someone else just contacted me.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said a name.
May you like
A name I never expected.
“Mark Reynolds.””
