Chapter 5: The Truth Behind Ethan’s Silence
I replayed Mark’s words over and over again.
“You were never the only secret in that marriage.””
The sentence followed me like a shadow.
I stood in the kitchen holding my phone, unable to move.
A few hours earlier, I thought my life had collapsed because Ethan discovered my betrayal.
Now I wasn’t sure what was real anymore.
Daniel walked back inside after finishing his call.
He immediately noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
“Mark called me.””
His face tightened.
“What did he say?””
I hesitated.
Because saying it out loud made it feel more real.
“He said Ethan was hiding something too.””
Daniel didn’t react the way I expected.
He didn’t laugh.
He didn’t dismiss it.
Instead, he became very still.
“That’s interesting.””
My stomach twisted.
“You know something?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
I stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“I said I don’t know.””
“But you look like you’re thinking.””
Everyone was thinking except me.
That was the part that scared me.
For months, I thought I was the person controlling the situation.
But now I realized I had been the only person who didn’t know the full story.
Daniel glanced at the camera on his chest.
“Your husband needs to hear this.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I need answers first.””
Daniel studied me.
“Claire, after everything today, you still think you’re the one who gets to decide the order?””
His words hurt.
But I didn’t argue.
Because he was right.
I had spent months making decisions without considering anyone else.
Now I wanted everyone to slow down because I was afraid.
Daniel connected the call again.
A few seconds later, Ethan answered.
“Everything okay?””
His voice sounded exhausted.
Not angry.
Just tired.
I swallowed.
“Mark called me.””
Silence.
Then Ethan asked:
“What did he say?””
“He said you’re hiding something.””
Another silence.
This one was different.
Longer.
Heavier.
I noticed Daniel looking at me.
“You knew something was coming,” I said.
Ethan didn’t answer.
“Ethan?””
Finally, he spoke.
“I was hoping you would never have to know.””
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?””
He sighed.
“Claire, there are things about my past that I didn’t tell you.””
I laughed softly.
A bitter sound.
“Apparently, we both had things we didn’t tell each other.””
“I know.””
The calmness in his voice frustrated me.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
Another pause.
Then Ethan said:
“Three years ago, before we moved into this house, I discovered something about Mark.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
“Mark wasn’t just a consultant at my company.””
The room became quiet.
“He was investigating my business.””
I frowned.
“Investigating?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ethan took a breath.
“Because someone hired him.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
The answer surprised me.
“You don’t know?””
“No. But I knew Mark was trying to get close to me.””
I shook my head.
“Then why did you introduce him to me?””
The silence that followed made my chest tighten.
“Ethan?””
“I didn’t know he would target you.””
Target.
That word felt wrong.
“Target me?””
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped closer.
His expression had changed.
He was listening carefully.
Ethan continued.
“Mark was never interested in you because of your loneliness.””
My eyes widened.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying he was looking for a weakness.””
My hands went cold.
“No.””
“Claire…”
“No.””
I didn’t want to hear it.
Because if Mark had manipulated me, then I had to face something worse.
Not just that I cheated.
But that I had been used.
“He made me feel important.””
Ethan’s voice softened.
“I know.””
“He listened.””
“I know.””
“He told me you didn’t appreciate me.””
“I know.””
I froze.
“You knew that?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you say anything?””
That question came from anger.
Real anger.
Ethan answered quietly.
“Because I wanted to know if you trusted him more than me.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
I looked away.
“You tested me.””
“No.””
“Then what was it?””
“A desperate attempt to understand what was happening.””
I wiped my eyes.
“You should have talked to me.””
“You’re right.””
The simple admission surprised me.
No excuses.
No blame.
Just honesty.
But then Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What is it?””
Daniel turned the phone around.
A photo appeared.
A picture of Mark standing outside a building.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
It was the person standing beside him.
Ethan.
My breath stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked serious.
“When was this taken?””
I stared at the image.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan suddenly spoke through the call.
“Send me that picture.””
Daniel did.
A few seconds passed.
Then Ethan became silent.
Too silent.
“Ethan?””
Nothing.
“Ethan, what is it?””
Finally, he answered.
“That picture was taken yesterday.””
My heart dropped.
“But you were at work yesterday.””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you standing next to Mark?””
No one spoke.
Then Ethan said something that changed everything.
“Because I wasn’t meeting Mark.””
May you like
A pause.
“I was meeting the person who hired him.””
