Chapter 2: The Man Behind The Uniform

I thought I was in control.

That was the first mistake I made.

The second was believing Ethan was still the same man who trusted me without question.

The landscaper stood inside our kitchen, looking around as if he had never been in a house this beautiful before.

I leaned against the counter.

“You’re quieter than I expected.””

He gave a small smile.

“Just doing my job.””

I laughed.

“Is that all?””

His eyes met mine for a brief second.

There was something strange about his expression.

Not excitement.

Not nervousness.

Something colder.

But I ignored it.

I had already created the story in my head.

I was the neglected wife.

He was the mysterious stranger.

Ethan was the man who never noticed me anymore.

At least, that was the story I wanted to believe.

“You know,” I said, walking toward the kitchen island, “most landscapers don’t come inside the house.””

He looked toward the window.

“Most people don’t invite them.””

His answer caught me off guard.

But instead of questioning it, I smiled.

“You’re confident.””

“I’ve been called worse.””

I laughed softly.

I thought he was flirting.

I thought he was impressed.

I thought everything was going exactly the way I wanted.

Outside, the lawn mower sat untouched.

The neighborhood was quiet.

The same neighbors who waved at Ethan every morning had no idea what was happening behind the walls of our perfect home.

That was the beauty of secrets.

They survived because everyone believed the image.

For years, people had looked at Ethan and me and said we were lucky.

The successful husband.

The beautiful home.

The perfect marriage.

Nobody saw the arguments.

Nobody saw the empty dinners.

Nobody saw me sitting alone at night, staring at a phone that never lit up.

Or at least, that was what I told myself.

The man in front of me watched me carefully.

“You’re not worried your husband will come home?””

The question made me freeze for half a second.

Then I smiled.

“Ethan won’t be home for hours.””

“You sound sure.””

“I am.””

The landscaper nodded slowly.

“Interesting.””

Something about that word bothered me.

Before I could ask what he meant, his phone vibrated.

He looked down quickly.

I noticed the movement.

“Everything okay?””

“Work.””

I smiled.

“Always work, right?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

The way he said it felt different.

Like he wasn’t talking about landscaping.

Across the city, Ethan watched the same moment unfold.

The investigator sitting in his office had headphones on.

“He’s inside now,” the investigator said.

Ethan stared at the screen.

His jaw tightened.

“Keep recording.””

The investigator nodded.

“We have enough already.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He kept watching.

Because even though the betrayal hurt, there was something else.

Something worse.

He was remembering every time he had defended her.

Every time someone warned him.

Every time he said, “My wife would never do that.””

He had spent months searching for a reason to explain her strange behavior.

The hidden phone calls.

The sudden schedule changes.

The unexplained afternoons away from home.

He didn’t want to believe the truth.

But now the truth was sitting inside his house.

Wearing a landscaping uniform.

And carrying a camera.

Back in the kitchen, I stepped closer.

“You know, I never caught your name.””

The man looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“Daniel,” I repeated.

He nodded.

“Nice to meet you.””

I smiled.

But then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Actually…”

He paused.

The confidence in his voice changed.

“I think you already know who I am.””

My smile faded slightly.

“What?””

Daniel reached toward his jacket.

For the first time, I noticed something.

The uniform.

The equipment.

The way he stood.

None of it looked like a landscaper anymore.

It looked like a disguise.

My stomach tightened.

“Who are you?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked directly at the hidden camera near his chest.

Then he said quietly:

“Someone your husband hired to find out the truth.””

My face went completely still.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

“No…”

Daniel pulled out his identification.

Not a landscaping company badge.

A private investigator license.

My hands started shaking.

But the worst part wasn’t that he had tricked me.

The worst part was knowing Ethan had seen everything.

Daniel looked at the small camera.

“Mr. Carter, she knows now.””

A voice came through his earpiece.

Ethan’s voice.

Calm.

Broken.

“Good.””

A long silence followed.

Then Ethan spoke again.

“Now ask her the question I’ve been waiting months to ask.””

Daniel looked back at me.

And his next words made my heart stop.

“Where is the man you’ve been meeting every Thursday afternoon?””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because that was the one secret I never thought Ethan knew.

May you like

And somehow…

He knew everything.
