Chapter 9: The Secret Buried For Decades

I stared at the message until my fingers went numb.

“Ask your grandmother why Daniel’s mother disappeared.””

It wasn’t a threat.

It wasn’t a warning.

It was something worse.

It was a door opening.

Another hidden room in a house already full of secrets.

I looked at my grandmother.

Her face told me everything.

She knew exactly what the message meant.

“Grandma.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

“Who sent this?””

She didn’t answer.

“Who sent this?””

Victoria sat down slowly.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like she had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“Her name was Margaret.””

I frowned.

“Daniel’s mother?””

My grandmother nodded.

“Yes.””

I waited.

But she said nothing else.

“Why did she disappear?””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“Because she left.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“You deserve the full truth.””

I crossed my arms.

“I’m tired of hearing that after everyone gives me half of it.””

My grandmother took a deep breath.

“Margaret was married to your grandfather’s business partner.””

I froze.

“My grandfather had a business partner?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Something happened between them.””

I waited.

Something.

That word had destroyed my life.

Everyone used it when they wanted to avoid saying the truth.

“What happened?””

Victoria looked toward the window.

“Your grandfather was accused of stealing from the company.””

I frowned.

“But you said he was innocent.””

“I believed he was.””

“And Daniel?””

She nodded.

“Daniel believed the opposite.””

The pieces started moving.

Not fitting.

Breaking.

“Daniel thought my grandfather ruined his family.””

“Yes.””

“So he came into my life for revenge.””

Victoria looked at me.

“At first.””

That answer shocked me.

“At first?””

She sighed.

“Claire, humans are complicated.””

I almost laughed.

“Not tonight.””

She looked down.

“Daniel was angry when he entered this family. But over time…”

She stopped.

“Over time what?””

“He started caring about you.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

Because some part of me wanted to believe that.

Even after everything.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Rachel?””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“Claire, listen carefully.””

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

My heart tightened.

“Another secret?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course.””

Rachel continued.

“I found Daniel’s old files.””

“What files?””

“Files about your grandfather.””

I looked at Victoria.

“She knows.””

There was silence.

Then Rachel said:

“Claire, Daniel wasn’t only looking for revenge.””

“What else?””

“He was looking for proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“That your grandfather wasn’t the person everyone thought he was.””

I looked at Victoria.

My grandmother noticed.

“Who is that?””

I put the phone on speaker.

Rachel continued.

“Daniel spent years believing your grandfather destroyed his mother’s life. But the documents he found showed something different.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

“His mother left because she discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

Rachel paused.

Then said:

“Your grandfather was framed.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my grandmother.

She covered her mouth.

“No…”

Rachel continued.

“Someone inside the company manipulated the records. Someone wanted your grandfather blamed.””

I whispered:

“Who?””

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Mark.””

My breath stopped.

Again.

The same name.

The same person standing behind every disaster.

Mark.

The man who introduced Daniel.

The man who knew everything.

The man who had been moving pieces long before I realized there was a game.

I looked at Victoria.

“Did you know?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I suspected.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“Not again.””

I walked away.

I couldn’t hear another explanation.

Another excuse.

Another person telling me they were protecting me.

Because protection had become another word for hiding things.

That night, I confronted Mark.

I didn’t call.

I went directly to his house.

When he opened the door and saw me, his face immediately changed.

“You know.””

It wasn’t a greeting.

It was a confession.

I stepped inside.

“You knew everything.””

Mark closed the door.

“Claire—”

“No.””

I held up the documents Rachel had sent me.

“You framed Daniel’s family.””

His face went pale.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why is your name everywhere?””

He looked away.

“Because I was trying to fix it.””

I laughed.

“By helping Daniel destroy mine?””

Mark’s shoulders dropped.

“I made a mistake.””

“You made thousands of choices.””

He looked at me.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“The truth coming out.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth.””

Mark sat down.

And finally, after all these years, he stopped pretending.

“Your grandfather didn’t steal anything.””

I waited.

“Daniel’s father did.””

I froze.

“What?””

Mark nodded.

“But when the evidence started pointing toward him, I helped cover it up.””

My stomach turned.

“Why?””

“Because I was young. Because I was scared. Because I thought I was protecting people.””

I stared at him.

“And Daniel found out.””

“Yes.””

Everything made sense.

Almost.

Then Mark said something that changed everything again.

“But Daniel doesn’t know the full truth.””

“What truth?””

Mark looked directly at me.

“The person who exposed the crime wasn’t your grandfather.””

I waited.

“It was Margaret.””

Daniel’s mother.

I felt cold.

“She tried to tell everyone.””

Mark nodded.

“And someone stopped her.””

“Who?””

Mark looked terrified.

Then whispered:

“The person who has been helping Daniel all along.””

I held my breath.

“Who?””

Mark opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The room went dark.

A phone rang somewhere behind us.

Mark looked at the screen.

His face drained of color.

“It’s him.””

“Who?””

May you like

Mark looked at me.

“Daniel.””
