Chapter 6: The Truth Mark Tried To Hide

The next morning, I met Mark at a quiet coffee shop downtown.

I didn’t tell Daniel.

I didn’t tell my parents.

I didn’t even tell my grandmother.

Because I needed to hear the truth from the person who had helped create the lie.

Mark arrived exactly on time.

That was always his style.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

Perfect control.

He sat across from me.

“Claire.””

I didn’t smile.

“Mark.””

He studied my face.

“You look different.””

“I found the notebook.””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a moment.

But it happened.

“What notebook?””

I placed a copy of one page on the table.

Not the original.

Just enough.

His eyes moved across the paper.

Then he leaned back.

“You shouldn’t have seen that.””

The words shocked me.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he didn’t deny it.

“So it’s true.””

Mark sighed.

“Claire, things are complicated.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that when they don’t want to admit they’re guilty.””

He looked around the coffee shop.

“Keep your voice down.””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“For years, you stood in my house. You ate at my table. You watched me build a life with Daniel.””

My voice shook.

“And you knew.””

Mark looked uncomfortable.

“I knew Daniel had plans.””

“What plans?””

He didn’t answer.

“Say it.””

He looked away.

“Plans to become part of something bigger.””

I felt sick.

“Meaning my family.””

Mark remained silent.

That silence was confirmation.

I looked at him.

“How did you meet him?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Years ago.””

“How many years?””

“Before your wedding.””

I closed my eyes.

The betrayal kept getting deeper.

Mark continued.

“Daniel was ambitious.””

“That’s what you call it?””

“He wanted security.””

“He wanted control.””

Mark looked down.

“I didn’t think it would go this far.””

I stared at him.

“You helped him.””

“I introduced him.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I thought he loved you.””

The words angered me more than anything.

“You thought?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“You helped bring a man into my life, then you acted surprised when he hurt me.””

Mark had no response.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Why my mother?””

His face changed.

“Claire…”

“Why Hannah?””

Silence.

“Why my grandmother?””

He looked away.

And I knew.

Daniel didn’t accidentally destroy my family.

He was collecting pieces of it.

But there was still something I didn’t understand.

“What does he want?””

Mark hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Control of the family trust.””

My chest tightened.

“The trust?””

He nodded.

“Daniel believed marrying you would eventually give him access.””

I felt dizzy.

“But he couldn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Mark looked at me.

“Because your grandmother changed everything.””

“What did she change?””

“She created conditions.””

I frowned.

“What conditions?””

Mark reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a document.

Then stopped.

“I shouldn’t show you this.””

I stared at him.

“After everything you did, don’t pretend you suddenly care.””

His hand froze.

Slowly, he pushed the paper across the table.

I looked down.

It was a legal agreement.

My grandmother’s name was on it.

Daniel’s name was on it.

And my name was there too.

I read the first line.

Then the second.

Then I stopped.

Because the agreement revealed something Daniel never knew.

Something that could destroy his entire plan.

I looked up at Mark.

“Why didn’t he know about this?””

Mark’s face went pale.

“Because if Daniel finds out…”

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Everything he worked for disappears.””

I folded the document.

For the first time in weeks, I felt something other than pain.

I felt strength.

But before I could leave, Mark grabbed his coffee cup and whispered:

“Claire, there’s one more thing.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“Daniel wasn’t just trying to get your family’s money.””

I waited.

“He was trying to protect himself from something that happened before he met you.””

My heart started racing.

“What happened?””

Mark looked toward the window.

Then back at me.

“A woman named Rachel.””

I frowned.

“Who is Rachel?””

May you like

Mark’s voice dropped.

“The woman Daniel was married to before you.””
