Chapter 5: The Name Hidden In The Notebook

I stared at the name written beneath Daniel’s plan until the letters stopped looking real.

My hands went cold.

My heart started beating faster.

Because the person listed beside Daniel was not a stranger.

Not a business partner.

Not someone outside our family.

It was someone I had trusted for years.

“Claire?””

My grandmother’s voice sounded distant.

I couldn’t answer.

Hannah leaned closer.

“What is it?””

I turned the notebook around.

Her face changed instantly.

“No…”

My mother looked between us.

“Who is it?””

I swallowed.

“It’s Mark.””

The room went silent.

My father’s closest friend.

The man who had been around our family since I was a child.

The man who gave speeches at my wedding.

The man Daniel always called his “mentor.””

My mother shook her head.

“That can’t be true.””

I looked back at the notebook.

There were dates.

Meetings.

Financial notes.

Little reminders.

Things that made no sense before but suddenly connected.

Daniel wasn’t acting alone.

He had help.

Hannah wiped her tears.

“I found it three months ago.””

I looked at her.

“Three months?””

“I thought it was just business notes.””

“You saw our names.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

The anger came quickly.

Not because she had made a mistake.

Because everyone seemed to know pieces of my life except me.

“How many people knew?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told me everything.

I stood up.

“I spent twelve years defending him.””

My voice cracked.

“I defended him when people said he was too charming. I defended him when my friends noticed he never talked about his past. I defended him when my father questioned his intentions.””

I looked around the room.

“And all of you knew something felt wrong.””

My mother reached for me.

“Claire, please.””

I stepped back.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

That sentence hurt everyone.

But it was the truth.

Later that afternoon, I went with my grandmother to her house.

She had kept every important document, every letter, every memory from her entire life.

She believed facts mattered.

“People can change stories,” she told me while opening an old cabinet.

“But they can’t change evidence.””

She pulled out a folder.

Inside were printed emails and handwritten notes.

I looked at her.

“How long have you known?””

Her eyes softened.

“Not long enough.””

That answer surprised me.

“What does that mean?””

“I suspected Daniel was hiding something when he started asking questions about the family business.””

I frowned.

“What questions?””

“Who controlled certain accounts. Who owned properties. Who would inherit what.””

A heavy feeling settled in my chest.

Daniel had never cared about those things openly.

He always acted like money didn’t matter.

But behind closed doors…

He was counting.

“He knew everything,” I whispered.

My grandmother nodded.

“He knew exactly where the weaknesses were.””

I looked through the folder.

Then I found something.

A photograph.

Daniel standing beside Mark.

Both of them smiling.

The date was from before Daniel and I got married.

I looked at my grandmother.

“Why do they have a picture together from before I met him?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Grandma?””

She sat down.

“Because I believe Daniel knew about this family before you ever introduced him.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at the picture.

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“What if he didn’t choose me?””

My grandmother looked at me.

“What do you mean?””

“What if he chose this family first?””

She didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

That evening, I returned home for the first time since the dinner.

The house felt different.

Like the walls knew what happened.

Daniel was waiting in the living room.

He looked exhausted.

But I felt nothing.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Just emptiness.

“Claire.””

I stopped.

“Why are you here?””

“I live here.””

I laughed quietly.

“No.””

I looked around.

“You lived here.””

His expression changed.

“I want to fix this.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I mean it.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me the truth.””

He looked away.

“What truth?””

“All of it.””

Silence.

“Did you know Mark before you met me?””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

That was enough.

“You did.””

Daniel sighed.

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost smiled.

“That sentence again.””

He sat down.

“Mark introduced me to opportunities.””

“What opportunities?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he looked at me.

“I knew your family was successful.””

The honesty shocked me.

“How long?””

He stayed silent.

“How long did you know?””

“Before the wedding.””

My stomach turned.

Years.

He had known.

Years.

“You married me because of my family.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

His eyes filled with frustration.

“I loved you.””

I stared at him.

“Maybe you did.””

That surprised him.

“But you loved what came with me too.””

He looked down.

And that was the closest thing to an answer I would ever get.

Then his phone rang.

Again.

He looked at the screen.

This time, I saw the name.

Mark.

Daniel immediately declined the call.

Too late.

I had seen it.

I looked at him.

“Why is he calling you?””

Daniel didn’t respond.

May you like

And I knew.

Whatever happened next was going to expose everyone.
