Chapter 4: The Man Behind The Mask
I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Daniel’s face across the dinner table.
Not the husband I married.
Not the man who held my hand through difficult years.
A stranger.
A stranger who knew exactly how to make people trust him.
By sunrise, I was sitting at my grandmother’s kitchen table with the envelope still in front of me.
I hadn’t opened the second document.
I was afraid of what it would reveal.
Victoria poured two cups of coffee and sat across from me.
“You deserve the whole truth.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me everything.””
She was quiet for a moment.
“Daniel met this family long before he met you.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He studied people.””
I almost laughed.
“That sounds insane.””
“I wish it was.””
My grandmother looked toward the window.
“Some people enter a family because they love someone. Others enter because they see something they want.””
My hands tightened around the envelope.
“What did he want?””
She looked at me.
“Security. Status. Money. A place where everyone would defend him.””
I thought about all the years Daniel spent charming my parents.
Helping at family events.
Showing up whenever someone needed him.
I always thought it was love.
Now I wondered if it was strategy.
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked down.
Daniel.
I almost ignored it.
But something inside me wanted answers.
I answered.
“What?””
There was silence on the other end.
Then his voice.
“Claire, please listen.””
I closed my eyes.
“You don’t get to ask me for patience anymore.””
“I know I hurt you.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You don’t know.””
He went quiet.
“Because if you knew, you would have stopped before it got this far.””
“Claire, I never wanted things to become this complicated.””
I looked at my grandmother.
Then at the documents.
“Complicated is forgetting an anniversary.””
I swallowed.
“Complicated is choosing the wrong words during an argument.””
My voice shook.
“This was a series of choices.””
Daniel sighed.
“I need to explain something.””
“Then explain.””
A long pause.
“There are things you don’t know about your family.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, the call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Victoria immediately noticed.
“What did he say?””
I repeated his words.
Her expression changed.
“He’s trying to shift the blame.””
“But what if there’s something I don’t know?””
My grandmother looked at me carefully.
“Everyone has secrets, Claire.””
She tapped the envelope.
“But secrets don’t erase responsibility.””
Later that morning, I went back downstairs.
My mother was sitting alone at the table.
She looked smaller than she had the night before.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I stood there.
Part of me wanted to comfort her.
She was my mother.
But another part of me was still shattered.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She covered her face.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I sat across from her.
“Were you ashamed before or after I found out?””
The question hurt her.
I could see it.
But I needed honesty.
“I thought I could handle it alone,” she said.
“You weren’t alone.””
She started crying.
“You’re right.””
For the first time that morning, I saw something real.
Not excuses.
Not lies.
Regret.
Then Hannah walked into the room.
She looked exhausted.
“I need to tell you something too.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She sat down slowly.
“Daniel wasn’t just hiding things from you.””
My heart started racing.
“What else?””
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small notebook.
“I found this in his car months ago.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t you show me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was afraid of what it meant.””
I opened the notebook.
The first page contained several names.
My family members.
Dates.
Notes.
My breathing became shallow.
This wasn’t a love story.
It wasn’t a mistake.
It looked like a plan.
I turned the page.
And there was one sentence written at the bottom.
A sentence that made my hands start shaking.
“Once Claire trusts me completely, everything will belong to us.””
I looked up at Hannah.
At my mother.
At my grandmother.
And I finally understood.
Daniel hadn’t just broken my heart.
He had been building a trap around my entire family.
But the question that haunted me was the one written on the next page.
Because underneath his plan was another name.
May you like
Someone who had been helping him from the beginning.
And when I saw who it was, I realized the betrayal was even closer than I imagined.
