Chapter 8: The Secret My Mother Left Behind

Nobody moved.

The wooden box sat on the floor of my childhood bedroom.

The broken lock hung open.

Waiting.

Like someone had opened it before we arrived.

Ethan looked around the room.

“Someone was here.””

I nodded.

“And they wanted us to find this.””

Diane stepped forward.

“Don’t open it.””

Everyone looked at her.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Diane swallowed.

“Because once you know the truth, there’s no going back.””

I stared at her.

“You’ve been saying that since we arrived.””

“Because it’s true.””

I picked up the box.

It was lighter than I expected.

Inside was an old envelope.

A small photograph.

And a necklace.

My breath caught.

The necklace was my mother’s.

I remembered it.

She wore it every day.

I thought it was buried with her.

I opened the envelope.

There was another letter.

This one was shorter.

Emily,

If you found this, then Diane finally told you the truth.

I looked at Diane.

She closed her eyes.

My mother’s words continued.

I know she will be afraid. Diane has spent years trying to control what she cannot change. But she was never the person who hurt me.

I stopped.

Ethan looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

I kept reading.

The danger was never Diane.

My heart started pounding.

Then who?

The next line answered.

The danger was the person Diane was trying to protect.

I slowly lowered the letter.

Everyone was silent.

Diane whispered:

“I tried to warn her.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Then why did you attack me?””

The question broke something in her face.

“I thought if I scared you away…”

She stopped.

I stared at her.

“You thought?””

Diane looked down.

“I thought you were the reason Ethan was vulnerable.””

Ethan’s voice became cold.

“So you hurt her because you were afraid?””

Diane didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

There was no excuse.

Then Ethan picked up the photograph from the box.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

It was a picture of my mother.

And another person.

A person I recognized immediately.

I felt my entire body go numb.

“No.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because standing beside my mother in the photograph was someone I had spent my whole life believing was a stranger.

Someone who had disappeared after my mother died.

Someone Diane had been protecting.

“My father.””

The room went silent.

Ethan frowned.

“Your father?””

I nodded slowly.

“I was told he left before I was born.””

Diane looked at the photo.

“He didn’t.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Diane sat down.

“Your father was there the night Margaret died.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened that night?””

Diane looked toward the window.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You know enough.””

She closed her eyes.

“Your mother found out he was involved in something dangerous.””

“What kind of something?””

Diane hesitated.

Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.

Another message.

Another unknown number.

He opened it.

And this time there was no photo.

Only words.

YOUR MOTHER TRUSTED THE WRONG PERSON.

BECAUSE THE MAN SHE FEARED MOST WAS NEVER DIANE.

IT WAS YOUR FATHER.

I looked at the screen.

My entire childhood suddenly felt like a lie.

Then the front door downstairs slammed shut.

Everyone froze.

Diane whispered:

“He found us.””

Ethan looked toward the hallway.

“Who?””

Diane’s face turned pale.

May you like

And she said the one name I never expected to hear.

“Emily’s father.””
