Chapter 5: The Woman Behind The Lies
Diane didn’t answer.
That was the moment I knew Ethan had found something she couldn’t explain away.
For weeks, she had controlled every conversation.
Every accusation.
Every argument.
She always had a response ready.
But now she was silent.
Ethan held the document in his hand.
“Mom.””
His voice wasn’t angry.
It was worse.
It was disappointed.
“Why did you hire someone to investigate Emily before we even got married?””
Diane looked at me.
Not him.
Me.
Like she blamed me for the fact that her secret had been discovered.
“I wanted to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect him?””
She ignored me.
“Yes, Ethan. I needed to know who she really was.””
Ethan shook his head.
“So you hired a private investigator?””
Diane crossed her arms.
“I’m your mother.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
She looked away.
“You were moving too fast.””
“We dated for two years.””
“That’s nothing.””
I stared at her.
Nothing.
That was how she saw my relationship with Ethan.
Nothing.
Diane walked toward the kitchen.
“I was trying to make sure you weren’t making the biggest mistake of your life.””
Ethan followed her.
“By digging through Emily’s private life?””
“By finding the truth.””
I stepped forward.
“What truth?””
Diane stopped.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
“You don’t want me to say it.””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“Say what?””
Diane looked at me.
“You were struggling before you met Ethan.””
I frowned.
“So?””
“You had debt.””
“I paid it.””
“You had problems.””
“Everyone has problems.””
She smiled.
“That’s exactly what I mean.””
I felt my anger rising.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know enough.””
“No. You know information you paid someone to steal.””
Ethan looked at his mother.
“She’s right.””
Diane shook her head.
“You’re both being emotional.””
“No,” Ethan said.
“We’re seeing clearly.””
The sentence hurt her.
I could tell.
Because Diane was used to Ethan defending her.
Even when she was wrong.
She looked at him like she couldn’t believe he had chosen another side.
“You’re really going to stand there and accuse me?””
“I’m asking questions.””
“You’re questioning your own mother.””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Diane slowly walked to the table and picked up the bracelet.
The same bracelet.
The one she claimed I stole.
“I made one mistake.””
Ethan stared at her.
“What mistake?””
“I underestimated her.””
I felt a chill.
“Me?””
Diane nodded.
“I thought you would leave after a few days.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
She smiled coldly.
“The apartment flooding was convenient.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“What did you say?””
Diane realized too late.
She had said too much.
“I didn’t mean—”
“No.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Say it again.””
Diane looked nervous.
“I meant the timing was unfortunate.””
But we both heard what she meant.
The flood.
The move.
The house.
None of it was random.
I looked at Ethan.
“Your mother wanted us here.””
He didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
Diane walked toward him.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She sighed.
“You were drifting away from me.””
Ethan stared at her.
“What?””
“You used to call me every day.””
“I was building my own family.””
“And she took you away.””
I felt something inside me break.
Not because Diane disliked me.
Because I finally understood.
This was never about coffee.
Or fingerprints.
Or a bracelet.
It was about control.
Diane wanted Ethan back under her influence.
And I was the person standing between them.
Noah appeared at the hallway entrance.
“Dad?””
Everyone turned.
His eyes moved between us.
“Are we leaving?””
Ethan immediately softened.
“Yes.””
Diane looked at him.
“You’re taking him away too?””
Ethan looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
She pointed at Noah.
“He’s my grandson.””
Noah stepped closer to me.
“I want to leave.””
Those words hit Diane harder than anything else.
She stared at him.
“You don’t mean that.””
Noah shook his head.
“I do.””
Diane’s expression changed.
“You’ve been influenced.””
“No.””
Noah looked directly at her.
“I saw what happened.””
The room went quiet.
Then Diane said something that made my blood run cold.
“You don’t know what Emily is capable of.””
Noah looked at her.
“I know what you’re capable of.””
Nobody spoke.
Ethan took a deep breath.
“We’re done.””
Diane’s eyes narrowed.
“You think this ends here?””
Ethan stopped.
“What does that mean?””
She smiled.
“You still don’t know everything.””
I felt that familiar fear again.
The feeling that she was always hiding something.
Diane walked toward the stairs.
“Before you leave, ask your wife where she was the night she met me.””
I froze.
Ethan turned toward me.
“Emily?””
My heart started pounding.
Because I knew exactly what Diane was doing.
She wasn’t revealing the truth.
She was creating a new suspicion.
But before I could speak, Ethan’s phone rang.
The same unknown number.
He answered.
A man’s voice came through.
“Ethan, don’t listen to your mother.””
Ethan stepped away.
“Who is this?””
The voice lowered.
“The person who knows why Diane has been watching Emily for six months.””
I looked at Ethan.
And then the man said:
“She wasn’t investigating your wife because she hated her.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was trying to find something your wife never knew existed.””
