Chapter 4: The Person Who Knew Too Much

Ethan stared at the photo for almost a full minute.

I watched the color disappear from his face.

“Ethan?””

He didn’t respond.

“Ethan, what is it?””

Slowly, he handed me the phone.

I looked down.

And there she was.

Diane.

Standing in her bedroom.

Holding the diamond bracelet.

Smiling.

The picture wasn’t blurry.

It wasn’t a guess.

It was proof.

My hands started shaking.

“She lied.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“She planned it.””

Noah was asleep in the next room, but I lowered my voice.

“Why?””

Ethan sat down.

“I don’t know.””

But I could tell he was starting to understand.

Diane hadn’t suddenly become cruel after I moved in.

She had been building toward something.

The next morning, Ethan drove us back to the house.

I didn’t want to go.

But he said we needed answers.

The house looked exactly the same.

The flowers near the front door.

The perfectly clean windows.

The expensive decorations.

Everything looked peaceful.

That was what disturbed me most.

A place could look beautiful and still feel dangerous.

Ethan knocked.

Nobody answered.

He used his key.

“Mom?””

No response.

We walked inside.

The living room was empty.

Then we heard a voice.

“You came back.””

Diane stood at the top of the stairs.

She looked completely calm.

Almost like yesterday never happened.

Ethan looked up.

“Where is the bracelet?””

Her expression changed slightly.

“What?””

“The bracelet you accused Emily of stealing.””

Diane slowly walked downstairs.

“You’re still believing her?””

I stepped forward.

“We have proof.””

She stopped.

“What proof?””

Ethan held up his phone.

The moment Diane saw the picture, her face changed.

Only for a second.

But we saw it.

“You don’t know where that came from,” she said.

“So it’s fake?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you holding the bracelet three days before you claimed it disappeared?””

Silence.

Diane looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

Then back at Ethan.

“You’re really going to destroy your relationship with your mother because of her?””

Ethan’s voice became cold.

“No. You did that yourself.””

Diane laughed softly.

“You have no idea what she’s doing.””

I shook my head.

“Why do you keep saying that?””

Because I wanted an answer.

I wanted to understand why someone could hate me so much.

Diane looked directly at me.

“Because you don’t belong here.””

The words were simple.

But they carried years of resentment.

“I never tried to replace anyone.””

Diane’s eyes narrowed.

“You replaced my son’s priorities.””

Ethan stepped between us.

“Stop.””

But Diane wasn’t looking at him anymore.

She was looking at me.

“You think you’re innocent?””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What are you talking about?””

She smiled.

“I know who you were before Ethan.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ethan looked confused.

“Mom?””

Diane walked toward the kitchen counter.

She picked up a folder.

“I found this before you moved in.””

My heart started racing.

She placed the folder on the table.

Ethan opened it.

Inside were printed documents.

My old address.

My employment records.

Personal information.

Things Diane should never have had.

“How did you get these?”” Ethan asked.

She ignored him.

“You didn’t tell him everything, did you, Emily?””

My throat went dry.

“I have nothing to hide.””

Diane smiled.

“Everyone has something to hide.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Emily?””

I stared at the papers.

I knew exactly what she was trying to do.

Create doubt.

Destroy trust.

The same way she had done with everything else.

But then Ethan noticed something.

He picked up one page.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

Diane looked away.

“What?””

“This isn’t Emily’s file.””

She froze.

Ethan flipped through the papers.

“This is yours.””

The room went silent.

Diane’s face turned pale.

Because she realized her mistake.

She had brought evidence.

But not against me.

Against herself.

Ethan looked at the final page.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Mom… why does this document show you paid someone to investigate Emily six months before we even met?””
