Chapter 2: The Secret Instructions

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The only sound in the backyard was the wind moving through the trees behind Diane’s house.

Diane stared at Noah’s phone like it was something dangerous.

“Noah,” she said slowly, forcing a calm voice.

“Give me that.””

He held it tighter.

“No.””

The answer surprised her.

I had never seen Noah speak to his grandmother that way before.

He was usually polite.

Quiet.

The kind of child who apologized even when someone else bumped into him.

But standing there, watching me trapped behind the kennel door, something inside him had changed.

Diane stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Noah shook his head.

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

My heart broke a little hearing those words.

Because he shouldn’t have had to be brave.

A child should never have to protect an adult from another adult.

I pressed my hand against the cold metal bars.

“Noah, stay away from her.””

He looked at me.

“Dad told me to keep you safe.””

Diane laughed.

A short, bitter laugh.

“Your father told you that?””

Noah nodded.

“He said Grandma gets angry when she feels like she’s losing control.””

Diane’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked nervous.

“Ethan said that?””

Noah didn’t answer.

He just looked at the phone.

I remembered the last few weeks.

The strange way Ethan had started asking questions.

“Are you okay living there?””

“Does my mom say things to you?””

“Has she ever made you uncomfortable?””

At the time, I thought he was just trying to understand.

Now I realized he had been watching.

Listening.

Preparing.

Diane pointed at the phone.

“Delete that.””

Noah stepped back.

“No.””

“Give it to me right now.””

“No.””

Her voice became louder.

“You are my grandson.””

“And she is my stepmom.””

The words stopped Diane.

Noah swallowed.

“She takes care of me. She makes dinner. She helps with homework. She never treated me like I wasn’t family.””

I felt tears forming in my eyes.

Because Noah was right.

I wasn’t his biological mother.

But I loved him like he was my own.

Diane looked between us.

“You have no idea what she’s done.””

I spoke quietly.

“What have I done?””

She looked at me.

“You came into this family and changed everything.””

I almost laughed.

“Diane, I married your son.””

“You took his attention.””

“No. I became his wife.””

She stepped toward the kennel.

“You think you belong here?””

Noah immediately moved between us.

“Don’t go near her.””

Diane stopped.

The little boy who used to hide behind Ethan was now standing in front of me.

Protecting me.

A car engine suddenly sounded from the driveway.

Diane turned.

Her face lost color.

Because she knew who it was.

A moment later, Ethan appeared near the side gate.

He looked exhausted from work.

Then he saw me.

His expression changed instantly.

“Emily?””

I looked at him.

I didn’t know whether to cry or scream.

“Ethan…”

He walked quickly across the yard.

“What happened?””

Noah ran toward him.

“Dad.””

Ethan looked at the phone in Noah’s hand.

Then at Diane.

“What did you do?””

Diane immediately shook her head.

“Ethan, don’t listen to them. Your wife is exaggerating.””

I stared at him.

“Exaggerating?””

My voice cracked.

“Your mother slapped me and locked me in here.””

Ethan looked at Diane.

“Mom?””

She crossed her arms.

“She became aggressive.””

Noah shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Diane looked at him.

“Noah.””

He didn’t stop.

“I saw Grandma push Mom into the kennel.””

Ethan’s face went completely still.

He looked at the lock.

Then the bars.

Then my cheek.

His voice became quiet.

“Mom, unlock the gate.””

Diane didn’t move.

“Ethan, you’re choosing her over me?””

He stared at her.

“No. I’m asking you why my wife is locked inside a dog kennel.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything before.

Diane looked away.

“I was teaching her a lesson.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“A lesson?””

“She disrespected me.””

“So you trapped her outside?””

“She needed consequences.””

I watched my husband process those words.

The man who always tried to avoid conflict was finally seeing the truth.

Diane reached for his arm.

“Ethan, you know how difficult she can be.””

He pulled away.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But firm.

“I know how difficult this has been for Emily.””

Diane looked shocked.

Noah walked back to the kennel and held the phone up.

“There’s more.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Noah unlocked the phone.

“Dad told me to record everything.””

My stomach tightened.

Diane’s face changed.

“What else did you record?””

Noah looked down at the screen.

Then he turned the phone toward Ethan.

“I recorded Grandma before you came home.””

Ethan took the phone.

He watched.

I watched his face change as the video played.

A few seconds later, he looked at his mother.

And the disappointment in his eyes was worse than anger.

“Mom…”

Diane’s lips parted.

But before she could answer, Ethan’s phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Because the name displayed there was someone none of us expected.

A person who knew exactly what Diane had been hiding.

May you like

And when Ethan answered, the first words he heard were:

“Ethan, you need to know what your mother did before Emily ever moved in.””
