Chapter 8: The Person Who Pulled The First Trigger

The countdown began.

01:59.

01:58.

Every second felt louder than the alarms.

The system wasn’t asking who was guilty.

It was asking who I trusted enough to give unlimited control.

And that was worse.

Because there was no correct answer.

I looked at the three names.

Maya.

Reed.

Voss.

My own name felt like a threat.

“This is what they wanted,” Sarah said.

I looked at her.

“What?””

“They wanted you to choose.””

Voss nodded slowly.

“The system was never about identifying a traitor.””

He looked around the room.

“It was about revealing one.””

My eyes moved toward Carter.

“You said you knew everything.””

Carter remained silent.

“Who designed this part?””

He looked at the screen.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“Why would she create something that forces people to betray each other?””

Carter shook his head.

“She didn’t.””

He looked toward the countdown.

“She created something that reveals what people do when they’re given power.””

The timer dropped.

01:30.

Reed walked toward the console.

“Don’t.””

Voss stopped him.

Reed looked back.

“If nobody chooses, the system locks permanently.””

Maya stared at him.

“You know that?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Because I was there when your mother built it.””

My eyes widened.

“You were closer to her than you admitted.””

Reed looked down.

“She trusted me.””

“And you betrayed her?””

His silence was painful.

I stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“What happened?””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“I was ordered to arrest her.””

The room went still.

“Why?””

“Because they believed she had created a weapon.””

“But she created a defense system.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Reed swallowed.

“Because the people giving orders were afraid of losing control.””

The countdown continued.

01:00.

Voss looked at Reed.

“You never told her the full truth.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Reed looked at me.

“Because your mother asked me not to.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew they would come for you.””

The words hit me.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small metal object.

A pendant.

My pendant.

The one I had worn since childhood.

I stared.

“How did you get that?””

Reed handed it to me.

“Your mother gave it to me the night she disappeared.””

My hands shook as I held it.

“Why?””

“Because she said one day you would need it.””

I opened the pendant.

Inside was a tiny symbol.

The same symbol that appeared during the transmission.

Voss stepped closer.

“That’s the original access mark.””

I looked at him.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Reed answered quietly.

“Because the moment you knew, they would know too.””

A sudden noise came from the hallway.

Someone was approaching.

Not rushing.

Walking.

Calmly.

Carter looked toward the door.

“They’re here.””

Sarah raised her weapon.

The countdown continued.

00:40.

The door opened.

Everyone aimed.

But the person who entered was not an agent.

It was an old woman.

She wore a simple gray coat.

Her hair was silver.

Her eyes were tired.

But familiar.

Nobody moved.

I couldn’t breathe.

Because I knew her face.

Not from photographs.

Not from memories.

From somewhere deeper.

The woman looked at me.

“Maya.””

My fingers tightened around the pendant.

“Mom?””

She smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

The room exploded with silence.

Voss lowered his weapon.

“Evelyn.””

She looked at him.

“You kept your promise.””

Then she looked at Reed.

“And you kept mine.””

Finally, she looked at Carter.

Her expression changed.

“You failed.””

Carter stepped back.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Evelyn…”

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“You need to choose.””

I looked at the countdown.

00:20.

“Choose what?””

She walked closer.

“The person who gets control.””

My voice trembled.

“Why?””

She stopped in front of me.

“Because whoever controls the system controls the world.””

The timer dropped.

00:15.

“And Maya…”

She touched my hand holding the pendant.

“You need to know something before you decide.””

“What?””

Her eyes moved toward Carter.

Then Voss.

Then Reed.

“The person who betrayed me…”

She paused.

“…is not the person you think.””

The countdown reached ten seconds.

Everyone looked at each other.

And then my mother whispered the name.

The name I never expected.

May you like

The name that changed everything.

“Your father.””
