Chapter 5: The Final Phase
The words stayed in my head.
“Thank you for activating the final phase.””
I stared at the man standing in the doorway.
His weapon was lowered.
That scared me more than if he had aimed it at me.
Because people who wanted to kill you usually made their intentions clear.
People who wanted something from you smiled.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The man stepped forward.
He was dressed like every other security officer inside the facility.
Same uniform.
Same badge.
Same calm expression.
But something about him felt wrong.
“My name is Agent Carter.””
Voss immediately moved in front of me.
“No.””
Carter smiled.
“That reaction tells me everything.””
Sarah raised her weapon.
“Take another step and you won’t walk out.””
Carter looked at her.
“Still protecting her after all this time?””
Sarah’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know exactly who you are.””
His eyes moved around the room.
“Every one of you.””
The command center felt smaller.
Trapped.
The doors were sealed.
The security system was compromised.
And somehow, this man had walked inside like he owned the place.
I looked at Voss.
“What does he mean?””
Voss didn’t answer.
That was the problem.
Everyone knew something I didn’t.
Carter noticed.
“She hasn’t been told.””
“No,” Voss said.
“Then you failed her.””
The anger in Voss’s face was immediate.
“Be careful.””
Carter laughed quietly.
“You spent three years hiding the truth. Don’t pretend you’re the hero now.””
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Everyone stopped.
I looked at Carter.
“Explain.””
He tilted his head.
“You really don’t know.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“That’s the most dangerous thing about you, Commander Hayes.””
“What?””
“You still believe the system is broken.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And it isn’t?””
“No.””
The room went silent.
“It was designed this way.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
The red line.
The launch.
The false attack.
The hidden command.
All of it.
Carter walked toward the main screen.
“The system needed a person with your profile.””
“My profile?””
“Someone loyal. Skilled. Trusted. Someone who would never authorize destruction without proof.””
I stared at him.
“You selected me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because you were the only person who could unlock the emergency override.””
My stomach dropped.
I looked at my hands.
The same hands that pushed the throttle.
The same hands that stopped the launch.
Carter smiled.
“You thought you prevented the attack.””
I felt my breathing change.
“But?””
He looked at the screen.
“But you completed the activation sequence.””
Nobody spoke.
I turned to Voss.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Voss looked away.
That was my answer.
The betrayal hurt.
Not because I didn’t expect secrets.
Because I expected him to protect me from them.
“What did I activate?””
Voss finally spoke.
“The real system.””
My voice became quiet.
“What real system?””
Sarah answered.
“The one hidden beneath the launch network.””
She looked devastated.
“Black Horizon wasn’t just about stopping an attack.””
She pointed toward the screen.
“It was about finding who controlled the entire system.””
Carter nodded.
“And you just gave us access.””
I stared at him.
“You.””
“Yes.””
“You’re one of them.””
His smile disappeared.
“I’m the person who has been cleaning up your mistakes.””
My anger rose.
“You almost started a war.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You almost exposed a system that keeps the world from collapsing.””
The room erupted.
Reed shouted.
“That’s not protection. That’s control.””
Carter looked at him.
“You always were too emotional, Daniel.””
Reed froze.
I noticed.
“You know each other.””
Carter looked amused.
“Of course we do.””
Reed’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t.””
Carter ignored him.
“Captain Reed was part of the original Black Horizon team.””
I looked at Reed.
“What?””
He closed his eyes.
“I was.””
The words landed heavily.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was ordered not to.””
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
Carter walked to the console.
“By the same people who gave you your mission tonight.””
My mind raced.
There were too many pieces.
Too many lies.
A warning flashed on the screen.
SYSTEM CORE ACCESSING.
Everyone looked up.
Voss’s face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He moved toward the terminal.
“The activation is complete.””
Carter smiled.
“Yes.””
Sarah looked at him.
“What happens now?””
Carter didn’t answer.
That scared me.
Because for the first time, he looked uncertain.
The screen changed.
A file appeared.
Not a military file.
A personal file.
My name.
MAYA ELIZABETH HAYES.
I stepped closer.
My entire history appeared.
Every mission.
Every evaluation.
Every psychological report.
Then one document appeared at the bottom.
CREATION DATE: 17 YEARS AGO.
I froze.
“That’s impossible.””
Voss looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
“Maya…”
I turned.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked back.
The document opened.
And the first sentence made my entire world collapse.
SUBJECT MAYA HAYES WAS IDENTIFIED BEFORE JOINING THE PROGRAM.
I couldn’t breathe.
Before joining the program?
What did that mean?
Carter watched my reaction.
“You finally understand.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, I don’t.””
He looked at me.
“You weren’t recruited because you were the best candidate.””
The lights flickered.
“You were recruited because you were the key.””
A loud explosion shook the building.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The armed agents turned toward the hallway.
Carter looked annoyed.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen yet.””
Voss noticed.
“Who is attacking?””
Carter didn’t answer.
Another explosion.
Closer.
Then every screen in the room changed.
A message appeared.
NOT YOUR SYSTEM.
NOT YOUR WAR.
A new voice came through the speakers.
Everyone froze.
Because this voice was not familiar.
Not to me.
Not to Voss.
Not to anyone.
“Commander Hayes.””
The voice was calm.
“Get away from them.””
Carter looked toward the ceiling.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
The voice continued.
“They have been lying to you since the beginning.””
The screen showed a new symbol.
One I had never seen before.
Voss whispered:
“No…”
I turned toward him.
“What is it?””
His face lost all color.
“That’s impossible.””
The voice returned.
“Maya, if you want the truth…”
A pause.
“Come find me.””
The screen displayed coordinates.
Then it went black.
Carter stared at the darkness.
And whispered:
“She’s alive.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
May you like
He slowly turned toward me.
“The person who started Black Horizon.””
