Chapter 7: The Choice Nobody Could Make

The screen kept flashing.

IDENTIFY THE TRAITOR.

Three names.

Three possibilities.

MAYA HAYES.

DANIEL REED.

ELIAS VOSS.

I stared at the words until they stopped looking real.

Someone had turned us into suspects.

Again.

The command center doors remained locked.

The alarms continued pulsing.

And somewhere outside those walls, an unknown force had taken control of the entire facility.

I looked at Voss.

Then Reed.

Then myself.

“This is a trap,” I said.

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

Because the three people in the room who understood this system better than anyone looked just as uncertain as I felt.

Carter walked toward the screen.

“No.””

His voice was low.

“No, this isn’t possible.””

I turned toward him.

“You said you knew everything.””

“I thought I did.””

That was the first honest thing he had said all night.

Reed stepped closer to the terminal.

“The system is forcing a loyalty verification.””

Voss looked at him.

“You know this protocol?””

Reed didn’t answer.

I noticed.

Again.

The silence.

The hidden knowledge.

The endless secrets.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“I need the truth.””

His face tightened.

“Maya.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m done accepting half answers.””

For a moment, he looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had been carrying something heavy for too long.

“I was part of the original security team assigned to Black Horizon.””

“I know.””

“But I wasn’t investigating your mother.””

I frowned.

“Then what were you doing?””

He looked at Voss.

“I was protecting her.””

The room went quiet.

Voss looked away.

My stomach tightened.

“Protecting who?””

Reed looked at me.

“Your mother.””

The answer felt impossible.

“You knew her?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Reed took a breath.

“Because before you joined the program, before you became Commander Hayes…”

He paused.

“I knew you.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My mind raced.

I tried to remember.

A childhood face.

A familiar voice.

Anything.

Nothing came.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After your mother disappeared.””

The word hit me.

Disappeared.

Not died.

Not gone.

Disappeared.

I looked at Voss.

“You all knew.””

Voss didn’t deny it.

“My orders were to keep you safe.””

“By lying?””

“By keeping you away from the people searching for your mother.””

I laughed bitterly.

“And somehow they still found me.””

A loud impact shook the building.

The lights flickered.

The security system changed again.

WARNING.

CORE BREACH IN PROGRESS.

Carter looked at the display.

“They’re inside.””

Sarah moved toward the weapons cabinet.

“How many?””

“Enough.””

The doors suddenly unlocked.

Everyone raised their weapons.

But nobody entered.

Instead, a small device rolled across the floor.

A communication module.

Reed immediately recognized it.

His face changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the device.

“That belongs to Evelyn.””

My heart stopped.

My mother.

The speaker activated.

“Maya.””

Her voice.

Again.

Everyone froze.

“Maya, if you can hear this, then they have activated the final containment protocol.””

I stepped closer.

“Mom?””

There was a pause.

Like she was trying not to break.

“I know you have questions.””

I whispered:

“Only a few thousand.””

Sarah almost smiled.

Even now.

Even during all this.

My mother continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

The room became silent.

“The people who built this system believed they could control human decisions.””

The screen showed new files.

“But I built a final safeguard.””

Voss stepped closer.

“What safeguard?””

Her voice answered:

“A person.””

Everyone looked at me.

My breathing stopped.

“No.””

My mother continued.

“Maya, you were never a key because of your access.””

A pause.

“You were the key because the system was designed to recognize your judgment.””

I felt a chill.

“The system learned from you.””

Reed whispered:

“She made the system dependent on her daughter.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“If someone attempts to use the system for destruction, only one person can override it completely.””

The screen displayed my name.

MAYA HAYES.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Voss looked at me.

“Maya.””

“I’m not a machine.””

“No one said you were.””

“But that’s what they did.””

My voice shook.

“They turned my entire life into a test.””

Nobody responded.

Because they knew.

I looked at Carter.

“Did you know?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

Carter finally spoke.

“I knew there was a human override.””

“Me.””

“Yes.””

“And you wanted me to activate it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty made me angry.

“You used me.””

Carter looked away.

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

For the first time, he seemed ashamed.

The device crackled.

My mother spoke again.

“Maya, there is one more thing.””

The screen changed.

A file appeared.

ONE FINAL RECORDING.

Created seventeen years ago.

My birthday.

I stared.

“Play it.””

Nobody moved.

Then the recording started.

My mother appeared younger.

Holding a baby.

Me.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, then I failed to protect you.””

I felt tears forming.

She continued.

“But I need you to know why I made the choices I made.””

The younger version of my mother looked down at me.

“Because the person who will destroy this system…”

She paused.

“…is not an enemy.””

The video froze.

A final line appeared.

ACCESS DENIED.

REMAINING TIME: 02:00.

Voss looked at the timer.

His expression changed.

“What?””

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

“The system isn’t asking us to identify the traitor.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

His voice was barely audible.

“It’s counting down to a decision.””

The lights turned red.

A new message appeared.

SELECT ONE PERSON TO RECEIVE FULL CONTROL.

My blood ran cold.

Because beneath the message were three buttons.

MAYA.

REED.

VOSS.

May you like

And a countdown.

Two minutes.
