Chapter 4: The Truth About Black Horizon

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible had just walked into the room.

Commander Elias Voss stood in the doorway.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

The man I remembered had always been impossible to shake.

Sharp uniform.

Perfect posture.

Eyes that noticed everything.

But this man looked exhausted.

Like he had spent three years fighting a war nobody knew existed.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

“You’re real,” I whispered.

Voss looked at me.

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because nothing about that night made sense anymore.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

His expression softened.

“I know.””

“Why?””

Before he could answer, Captain Reed stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Everyone turned.

Reed looked at Voss with anger I had never seen before.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Voss stared at him.

“That’s interesting coming from you.””

The tension between them filled the room.

I looked at Reed.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

My voice became sharper.

“You knew he was alive.””

Reed finally looked at me.

“Yes.””

The word felt like a punch.

I stepped back.

“How long?””

“Three years.””

Three years.

Three years of believing I had lost my commander.

Three years of trusting the people who knew the truth.

I looked at Sarah.

“You knew too.””

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

The betrayal hurt more than the danger.

Because the people standing around me were the people I trusted most.

Voss walked closer.

“Maya, I understand what this looks like.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You all made choices for me.””

He stopped.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just an admission.

“I made a choice because I thought it would keep you alive.””

I shook my head.

“And now?””

“Now they know you’re the one person who can destroy them.””

A warning appeared on the main screen.

UNKNOWN OPERATIVE APPROACHING.

Voss glanced at it.

“They found us.””

Sarah moved toward the door.

“How much time?””

“Not enough.””

I looked at Voss.

“Start explaining.””

He nodded.

“Three years ago, Black Horizon wasn’t a failed mission.””

He touched the screen.

A classified file appeared.

OPERATION BLACK HORIZON.

“This mission was created to uncover illegal modifications inside our defense systems.””

I watched the documents appear.

Hidden commands.

Unauthorized access.

Fake authorization codes.

The same things I had found tonight.

“Someone inside our organization was building a system that could create a false attack.””

I stared at him.

“A false attack?””

Voss nodded.

“Something convincing enough that nations would respond before anyone discovered the truth.””

Sarah continued.

“They didn’t need to launch a weapon.””

“They only needed everyone to believe one had been launched.””

My stomach tightened.

The consequences were enormous.

A mistake like that could destroy everything.

“So what happened during your mission?””

Voss looked down.

“We found the people responsible.””

“And?””

“They found us first.””

The room became quiet.

“I was captured.””

I looked at Sarah.

“And she helped you escape?””

Voss nodded.

“She was the only person I could trust.””

Reed looked away.

I noticed.

“You weren’t part of that?””

His expression hardened.

“I was trying to protect the investigation from inside.””

“By lying to me?””

He looked at me.

“By keeping you alive.””

I wanted to argue.

But something stopped me.

Because deep down, I knew the truth.

Someone had spent three years planning tonight.

And somehow, I was at the center of it.

A sudden sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Multiple people.

Voss immediately became serious.

“We need to move.””

I looked at the approaching shadows.

“Who are they?””

His answer was quiet.

“The people who ordered the launch.””

The door handle began turning.

Sarah grabbed a weapon from the emergency cabinet.

Reed moved beside her.

For the first time all night, they were standing on the same side.

Voss looked at me.

“Maya, listen carefully.””

“What?””

“The red line you stopped…”

The door began opening.

“It wasn’t aimed at another country.””

My heart stopped.

“Then what was it aimed at?””

Voss looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

“It was aimed at this building.””

The door opened.

Armed figures appeared.

But they weren’t looking at Voss.

They weren’t looking at Sarah.

They were looking directly at me.

One of them stepped forward.

And said:

“Commander Hayes, thank you for activating the final phase.””

I froze.

Because I had no idea what he meant.

But Voss did.

May you like

And the fear in his eyes told me one thing.

I had already done exactly what they wanted.
