Chapter 3 - The Story Vanessa Prepared

Police separated us.

One officer took Ethan and Lily into the library.

Another brought Vanessa toward the sitting room.

I remained in the hallway with Detective Mara Cole, who had arrived after patrol officers realized a child was involved.

My catering supervisor hovered nearby.

I could tell he wanted me to apologize.

I had no idea for what.

Detective Cole looked toward the open compartment.

“You found the child there?”

“Yes.”

“Did you move the painting?”

“Yes.”

“Did you enter the compartment?”

“Only enough to untie Lily.”

“You removed the rope?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

I pointed.

It lay on the carpet.

An officer photographed it before placing it into an evidence bag.

Detective Cole nodded.

“Start from the beginning.”

I told her everything.

The knocking.

The crying.

Lily asking me not to close the wall.

Vanessa arriving.

Her lack of surprise.

Her command to replace the painting.

Cole took notes without reacting.

When I finished, she asked, “Did Mrs. Carter threaten you?”

“She said I would regret what I was doing.”

“Exact words?”

“As close as I remember.”

My supervisor stepped in.

“Rachel was supposed to remain in service areas.”

Detective Cole looked at him.

“Was the child in a service area?”

“No.”

“Then I don’t care where Rachel was supposed to be.”

I almost smiled.

He disappeared.

Detective Cole examined the opening.

An officer inside called out measurements.

The compartment was thirty-one inches deep.

Just over five feet tall.

No window.

A narrow vent connected to an old service shaft.

There was a latch hidden behind the painting.

It could only be opened from outside.

That mattered.

A lot.

Vanessa had claimed Lily went there voluntarily.

Lily could not have closed herself inside.

Detective Cole asked me to wait.

I sat on a bench while wealthy guests were quietly escorted from the mansion.

Some avoided looking at me.

Others stared openly.

Phones were everywhere.

I knew by morning half the city would know.

Ethan emerged after nearly twenty minutes.

Lily was in his arms.

A female paramedic walked beside him.

The child still looked pale.

“Hospital,” the paramedic said.

Ethan nodded.

Vanessa came from the sitting room.

“I’m coming.”

Lily immediately buried her face in Ethan’s shoulder.

He stopped.

“No.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“What?”

“I’ll take her.”

“I’m her mother.”

“You’re her stepmother.”

The correction was quiet.

Brutal.

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You’ve never called me that.”

“Tonight I am.”

I learned then that Lily’s biological mother, Claire Carter, had died almost three years earlier.

Vanessa had married Ethan fourteen months after Claire’s death.

Lily had been barely two.

Vanessa had encouraged everyone to call her Lily’s mother.

Apparently Ethan had allowed it.

Until now.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Do not embarrass me in front of these people.”

Ethan stared at her.

“I’m taking my daughter to the hospital.”

“You’re acting like I injured her.”

“You tied her wrists.”

“She was scratching me.”

“Show me.”

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

“Show me where she scratched you.”

Vanessa looked at her arms.

Perfect skin.

No marks.

“She scratched my shoulder.”

“Show me.”

Her cheeks flushed.

Detective Cole intervened.

“Mr. Carter, take Lily to the ambulance.”

Vanessa stepped after him.

The detective blocked her.

“You need to remain here.”

“Am I under arrest?”

“Not currently.”

“Then you cannot hold me.”

“I can ask you not to interfere while officers document potential evidence involving a minor.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“This woman caused all of this.”

Cole followed her gaze.

“She heard a child asking for help.”

“She trespassed.”

“Inside a home where she had permission to work.”

“She went somewhere she wasn’t supposed to.”

Detective Cole’s expression barely changed.

“That sentence may not help you as much as you think.”

Vanessa finally stopped talking.

Ethan left with Lily.

I wanted to go.

I had no reason to.

I was nobody to that child.

A server.

A stranger who happened to hear knocking.

That thought hurt more than I expected.

Detective Cole asked whether I could come to the station later for a formal statement.

“Yes.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

I looked at her.

“You enjoy this?”

“No.”

“You think you’re a hero.”

“I think Lily needed someone to open that wall.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“You don’t know Lily.”

“I know she was afraid of you.”

Vanessa stepped toward me.

Detective Cole moved between us.

“Mrs. Carter.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask Rachel why she was in the east hallway.”

I stared at her.

“I was carrying champagne.”

“She had been told not to use that hallway.”

My supervisor looked uncomfortable.

“That’s technically true.”

Vanessa continued.

“Ask whether she had been watching my husband.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“She stared at Ethan all night.”

“That is insane.”

“Several people noticed.”

I looked at my supervisor.

He avoided my eyes.

Vanessa smiled.

There it was.

A new story.

Prepared within minutes.

I was not a stranger who rescued Lily anymore.

I was an obsessed employee.

A woman interested in Ethan.

A trespasser.

Someone trying to create trouble in a wealthy marriage.

Detective Cole asked, “Did you know Mr. Carter before tonight?”

“No.”

“Ever speak to him?”

“No.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Convenient.”

I looked at her.

“You’re trying to make this about me.”

“You made it about you the moment you touched my family.”

The detective sent Vanessa toward another room.

Then she turned to me.

“Do you have anyone you can stay with tonight?”

The question frightened me.

“Why?”

“Because this is already becoming public.”

I pulled out my phone.

Thirty-two missed notifications.

Messages.

News alerts.

A photograph of me holding Lily had already appeared online.

The headline read:

MYSTERY SERVER AT CENTER OF CARTER MANSION CHILD INCIDENT.

My face was visible.

So was Lily’s.

My stomach dropped.

Detective Cole sighed.

“Don’t speak to reporters.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

My supervisor approached.

“Rachel, we need your uniform.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“You’re suspended pending review.”

I laughed in disbelief.

“For rescuing a child?”

“For violating event procedures.”

Detective Cole looked disgusted.

My supervisor lowered his voice.

“The Carters are one of our biggest clients.”

I looked toward the room where Vanessa had disappeared.

Of course.

Money.

Reputation.

Fear.

They were already working.

I removed my catering jacket.

Handed it to him.

Then I walked out of the mansion wearing a white blouse and black pants.

Cameras flashed outside.

People shouted questions.

“Rachel!”

“Did Vanessa Carter abuse Lily?”

“Are you involved with Ethan Carter?”

I pushed through them.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered without thinking.

No one spoke.

Then a woman whispered:

May you like

“You should have put the painting back.”

The call ended.
