Chapter 10 - What the Camera Recorded

The nursery camera had cloud storage.

Vanessa apparently did not realize deleted footage could be recovered.

Detective Cole called Ethan first.

Then me.

“Prepare yourselves.”

I hated that phrase.

Nothing good followed it.

The recordings covered nearly four months.

Most were ordinary.

Lily sleeping.

Playing.

Talking to toys.

Elena folding clothes before Vanessa fired her.

Then the patterns appeared.

Vanessa entering after Ethan left.

Her voice changing.

Doors closing.

One video showed Lily sitting on the floor.

Vanessa stood over her.

“Why did you tell Daddy you were hungry?”

“I was hungry.”

“You make me look bad.”

Lily looked confused.

“Hungry is bad?”

“No.”

Vanessa crouched.

“But embarrassing me is bad.”

Another recording showed Lily holding Claire’s photograph.

Vanessa took it.

“Daddy doesn’t want these.”

“He loves Mommy.”

“Daddy loves me now.”

Lily began crying.

Vanessa whispered:

“Dead people don’t come back.”

I had to stop watching.

Ethan did not.

His face became harder with every minute.

Another clip showed Vanessa questioning Lily about me.

“Why do you watch the server?”

“She smiles.”

“Do you know her?”

“No.”

“Then stop staring.”

Lily hugged a stuffed rabbit.

Vanessa took it.

“People who work here are not your friends.”

That was weeks before I opened the painting.

Then came the worst recording.

Not the compartment.

The camera did not cover that hallway.

This was Lily’s bedroom three days before the gala.

Vanessa held the red folder.

“Did you touch this?”

Lily shook her head.

“Do not lie.”

“I saw Mommy name.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Where?”

“Paper.”

“What else did you see?”

Lily began crying.

“Nothing.”

“Did you tell Caleb?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Daddy?”

“No.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

Lily shook her head.

Vanessa leaned close.

“If you tell Daddy, he’ll send Rachel away.”

Lily stared at her.

“Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“She’ll never come back.”

Lily cried harder.

Then Vanessa added:

“And Caleb will stay at school forever.”

That was why Lily had been so frightened.

Vanessa chose the two people Lily associated with kindness.

Caleb.

And a stranger who had smiled from a distance.

She threatened to erase both.

Ethan finally paused the video.

“She used you before you even knew Lily.”

I nodded.

My hands were shaking.

“I was useful because Lily liked me.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“You were dangerous to Vanessa because Lily trusted you without Vanessa’s permission.”

Detective Cole recovered another recording.

Vanessa speaking on the phone.

Only her voice was clear.

“Yes, the behavioral program is expensive.”

Pause.

“That’s the point.”

Another pause.

“If the expense is approved from Lily’s assets, access becomes routine.”

My stomach twisted.

Routine.

That word made everything uglier.

Vanessa was not planning one large theft.

She wanted repeated authorized withdrawals.

Treatment.

Specialists.

Private transportation.

Consulting.

Services provided by companies connected to people she controlled.

A pipeline from Lily’s trust.

Then Ethan heard Vanessa mention someone named Melissa.

Her sister.

Police subpoenaed financial records.

Payments appeared.

Vanessa had transferred household money to Melissa’s consulting company.

Melissa then paid the private investigator.

The public relations consultant.

And a firm that specialized in high-net-worth trust restructuring.

Detective Cole finally had enough for criminal investigators specializing in financial fraud.

Vanessa’s problems were expanding.

She responded the only way she knew.

Attack.

A new article appeared online.

FORMER CARTER SERVER SEEKING MILLIONS.

Completely false.

Then someone leaked my apartment address.

Megan called while I was at Grace’s house.

“There are reporters outside.”

My blood ran cold.

“Are you inside?”

“Yes.”

“Lock everything.”

“Already did.”

Detective Cole sent officers.

That night I stayed at the Carter guest house because it had private security.

I hated the decision.

It looked terrible.

Vanessa’s lawyer would love it.

Ethan understood.

“You can stay with Grace.”

“Reporters know her address.”

“My security team can protect you here.”

“I know how this looks.”

He gave me a tired smile.

“Rachel, at this point Vanessa could photograph you standing beside a mailbox and claim you’re having an affair with the Postal Service.”

I laughed.

It was the first time either of us had laughed in days.

Then Lily appeared at the staircase.

“You sleep here?”

“Just tonight.”

She ran toward me.

“Forever?”

“No.”

Her face fell.

I crouched.

“Why does forever matter?”

She thought about it.

“People leave.”

My chest tightened.

“Sometimes.”

“Mommy left.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Caleb left.”

“He came back.”

“Elena left.”

I looked at Ethan.

Vanessa had told Lily everyone left because of her behavior.

I understood now.

“Lily.”

She looked at me.

“Sometimes people leave because they choose to.”

I touched her hand.

“Sometimes because they have to.”

Then I added:

“But people leaving does not mean you were bad.”

She stared at me.

“Vanessa says—”

“I know.”

I softened my voice.

“Vanessa was wrong.”

Lily looked toward Ethan.

He knelt beside her.

“She was wrong about that.”

Lily’s lip trembled.

“Was I bad in wall?”

Ethan broke.

He pulled her into his arms.

“No.”

She cried against him.

“You were never bad enough to deserve that.”

I turned away because the moment belonged to them.

Later that night, Detective Cole called.

Police had recovered a final portion of footage.

Vanessa on the phone the morning of the gala.

Her words were clear.

“If Lily talks tonight, Rachel cannot leave that house believing her.”

I gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?”

Cole answered carefully.

“We don’t know yet.”

May you like

Then she added:

“But we found evidence Vanessa planned to accuse you before you ever heard the knocking.”
