Chapter 2 - Everyone Looked at Me

The man who reached us first was tall, dark-haired, and wearing a black tuxedo.
I knew immediately who he was.
Ethan Carter.
Vanessa’s husband.
Lily’s father.
He looked at the moved painting.
Then at me.
Then he saw Lily.
His face changed.
“Lily?”
She lifted her head from my shoulder.
“Daddy.”
Ethan crossed the hallway in three steps.
“What happened?”
I started speaking.
Vanessa spoke louder.
“This woman dragged Lily out of her room.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
More guests entered the hallway.
Vanessa put one hand against her chest.
“I found Rachel pulling her from the wall compartment.”
My mouth fell open.
Ethan looked at me.
Confusion replaced panic.
“Why was my daughter in there?”
“She was tied up.”
Vanessa interrupted.
“Because she was having one of her episodes.”
I looked at Ethan.
“She was locked behind the painting.”
“That isn’t what happened.”
Vanessa’s voice cracked dramatically.
“I was trying to calm her down privately.”
Lily tightened her arms around my neck.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Sweetheart, come to Daddy.”
Lily looked at him.
I expected her to reach for him.
She did not.
Instead she whispered, “Vanessa.”
Ethan glanced at his wife.
“What about Vanessa?”
Lily trembled.
Vanessa smiled.
“She’s confused.”
I could feel anger building in my chest.
“She isn’t confused.”
Vanessa looked at me sharply.
“You know her for five minutes.”
“I know terror when I see it.”
One of the guests whispered.
Another raised a phone.
Vanessa noticed immediately.
“Everyone, please return to the ballroom.”
Nobody moved.
Ethan looked at Lily’s wrists.
The rope marks were clearly visible.
His face drained of color.
“Who tied you?”
Lily stared down.
Vanessa answered.
“I did.”
The hallway became silent.
Ethan looked at her.
“You tied her hands?”
“She was hitting me.”
Lily whispered, “No.”
Vanessa turned.
“What?”
Lily hid her face again.
I felt her breathing become faster.
I rubbed her back.
“You don’t have to say anything.”
Vanessa snapped at me.
“Stop coaching her.”
“I’m telling her she doesn’t have to speak.”
“You are a stranger.”
“And she still feels safer holding me than going to you.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
Ethan heard it.
So did everyone.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly. “What happened?”
She exhaled.
“Lily became hysterical.”
“Why?”
“She was touching things in my office.”
“She’s four.”
“She destroyed important documents.”
“What documents?”
Vanessa paused.
“Personal documents.”
I saw Ethan notice the hesitation.
“She became violent when I corrected her.”
Lily suddenly lifted her head.
“I didn’t.”
Ethan moved closer.
“Baby?”
“I didn’t hit.”
Vanessa sighed as though Lily were exhausting her.
“This is exactly what I mean. She lies when she’s upset.”
Ethan flinched.
I felt something inside me go cold.
Vanessa had practiced saying that.
I was sure of it.
A member of the security team appeared.
“Mr. Carter?”
Vanessa pointed at me.
“Get her out.”
The guard looked at Ethan.
I held Lily tighter.
“If you touch me, call the police first.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Now she’s threatening security.”
“I’m asking for police.”
That changed the room.
Vanessa’s confidence flickered.
Ethan looked at me.
“What exactly did you see?”
“I heard knocking.”
I pointed toward the compartment.
“I moved the painting. Lily was inside. Her hands were tied. She asked me not to close it again.”
Ethan closed his eyes briefly.
Vanessa shook her head.
“She was being dramatic.”
I stared at her.
“She is four years old.”
“Rachel.”
My catering supervisor arrived.
His face was red.
“What happened?”
Vanessa immediately said, “Your employee entered a private section of my house and interfered with my daughter.”
He looked horrified.
“Rachel?”
“There was a child crying inside a wall.”
“This is a family matter.”
“No.”
I could not believe him.
“A tied child is not a family matter.”
Vanessa pointed toward the ballroom.
“Remove her.”
My supervisor stepped toward me.
Then Lily screamed.
“No!”
Everyone froze.
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
“Don’t give me.”
Ethan looked devastated.
“Lily, nobody is giving you anywhere.”
She began crying.
“Don’t put me back.”
The words spread through the hallway like smoke.
Guests stopped whispering.
A woman near the back covered her mouth.
Ethan stared at the compartment.
Then at Vanessa.
“Back?”
Vanessa’s lips parted.
Lily sobbed.
“She closes it.”
I felt Ethan go still.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That is enough.”
Lily screamed again.
I backed away.
“Stay away from her.”
Vanessa looked at me with open hatred.
“You have no right.”
“I have two arms, and she is asking me to keep you away.”
Ethan raised one hand.
“Vanessa, stop.”
She turned toward him.
“You’re listening to a server over your wife?”
“I’m listening to Lily.”
“You know how she gets.”
That sentence changed something in his face.
“How does she get?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“You know.”
“No.”
His voice sharpened.
“Tell me.”
Vanessa looked around at the guests.
“This is humiliating.”
Ethan stared at her.
“My daughter was tied behind a wall.”
“She was safe.”
I nearly shouted.
“There was no light!”
“It’s ventilated.”
I looked at her.
“How do you know?”
Vanessa froze.
Ethan did too.
I felt the entire hallway understand the same thing.
Vanessa had just admitted familiarity with the compartment.
Ethan’s voice became quiet.
“How often has she been in there?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“Ethan.”
“How often?”
“Once or twice.”
Lily whimpered.
Vanessa corrected herself.
“A few times.”
Ethan looked physically sick.
A guest near the back said, “I’m calling police.”
Vanessa spun around.
“No.”
Too late.
The guest already had her phone out.
Vanessa turned toward Ethan.
“You cannot allow strangers to turn this into something it isn’t.”
He looked at Lily’s wrists.
“What is it?”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Discipline.”
I felt Lily shake.
Ethan saw it.
He reached toward her carefully.
“Lily, can I hold you?”
She looked at me.
I whispered, “Only if you want.”
Vanessa scoffed.
I ignored her.
Lily slowly reached one hand toward Ethan.
He took her.
The second she was against his chest, he began crying.
Quietly.
Like he did not want anyone to see.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily touched his collar.
“I was good.”
Ethan shut his eyes.
“You don’t have to be good to deserve coming out.”
Vanessa looked furious.
Sirens sounded outside.
My supervisor whispered, “Rachel, what did you do?”
I looked at him.
“I opened a painting.”
Police entered the mansion three minutes later.
By then Vanessa had recovered.
She stood straight.
Calm.
Elegant.
Ready.
One officer approached.
“Who called?”
Several people answered at once.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“There has been a terrible misunderstanding.”
May you like
Then she pointed at me.
And once again, somehow, I became the person everyone was supposed to suspect.
