Chapter 8: The Truth Behind The Papers

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

Not because I had slept well.

I barely slept at all.

My mind kept replaying everything.

The office.

Olivia.

Rachel.

Lauren.

The documents.

The version of Marcus I thought I knew was disappearing piece by piece.

But something else was replacing it.

Clarity.

For years, I had asked myself why certain things never added up.

Now I finally had the answer.

They weren’t accidents.

They were choices.

I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table with every document Daniel had given me.

The separation agreement.

Financial records.

Notes.

Dates.

A timeline of Marcus’s life that looked completely different from the one he showed me.

Then I noticed something.

A pattern.

Every time Marcus started a new relationship, something changed.

New job.

New apartment.

New circle of friends.

New story.

He erased his past.

Including the people who loved him.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

“Are you okay?””

She sounded worried.

“I’m okay.””

A pause.

“Nia… Marcus came to my house last night.””

My hand tightened around the coffee mug.

“What did he want?””

“He wanted to know what I told you.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did you say?””

“The truth.””

I smiled sadly.

“Someone finally did.””

Rachel was quiet.

Then she said, “There’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“What?””

“Marcus wasn’t just protecting his reputation.””

“What do you mean?””

“He was protecting money.””

I looked at the papers in front of me.

“Explain.””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“When Claire left, she discovered something.””

“What?””

“She found out Marcus had moved assets.””

I sat up.

“Moved?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he was preparing for the possibility that someone would challenge him.””

My heart started beating faster.

“He planned for people to leave.””

Rachel corrected me gently.

“No.””

A pause.

“He planned for people to find out.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Marcus knew.

He knew this day might come.

He had been preparing.

I looked again at the agreement.

The document wasn’t about separation.

It was about control.

A way to make sure he stayed protected.

A way to make everyone else feel powerless.

“I need to find out what’s missing,” I said.

Rachel was quiet.

Then she answered.

“I know someone who can help.””

“Who?””

“His assistant.””

I frowned.

“His assistant?””

“Her name is Emily.””

I remembered her.

A young woman who worked with Marcus.

Always polite.

Always professional.

Always nervous around him.

“What does she know?””

Rachel sighed.

“More than anyone.””

Two hours later, I met Emily at a quiet park.

She looked around constantly.

Like she was afraid someone was watching.

“Nia?””

I nodded.

She sat down.

“I almost didn’t come.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because Marcus is powerful.””

I didn’t argue.

Because I understood.

People were afraid of him.

Not because he yelled.

Not because he threatened openly.

Because he knew exactly how to destroy someone’s reputation.

“What do you know?”” I asked.

Emily looked down.

“I worked for Marcus for six years.””

“And?””

“He kept records.””

“Records of what?””

“Everyone.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“People who questioned him. People who left. People who knew too much.””

A chill moved through me.

“Why?””

Emily looked at me.

“Because Marcus never wanted to be caught without a defense.””

She handed me a small envelope.

“What is this?””

“Something I copied before I quit.””

I opened it.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Notes.

And then I saw mine.

My breathing stopped.

Next to my name were three words.

Final replacement plan.

I looked at Emily.

“What is this?””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know exactly.””

“Then why give it to me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I think Marcus wasn’t planning to leave you.””

I stared at her.

“Then what was he planning?””

Emily swallowed.

And the answer came out almost as a whisper.

“He was planning to make you disappear from his life completely.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Nia, my name is Robert. I was Marcus’s attorney.””

My heart sank.

“Why are you calling me?””

There was a long pause.

Then he said:

“Because I found out Marcus has been hiding something even bigger than his marriages.””

I stood frozen.

“What?””

May you like

His voice lowered.

“And if you don’t see it before he does, you may lose everything.””
