Chapter 1: The Lunch That Changed Everything

I thought I was walking into my husband’s office to surprise him with a homemade lunch.

I never imagined I was about to discover that the man I had loved for eight years had been living a second life right in front of me.

That morning, Marcus had rushed out of the house without his lunch bag sitting on the kitchen counter where I always placed it.

“Marcus!”” I called from the doorway as he grabbed his keys.

“You forgot this.””

He stopped for half a second, looked back, and smiled.

“Again?”” he laughed.

“You’re saving my life, Nia.””

I rolled my eyes, but I smiled too.

“You say that every week.””

“Because every week you do.””

Those small moments were what I loved about our marriage.

Not expensive gifts.

Not fancy vacations.

Just the little things.

The way he kissed my forehead before leaving.

The way he always texted me when he arrived at work.

The way he called me “my girl” even after eight years together.

At least, that was the man I believed I knew.

That afternoon, I noticed his lunch bag still sitting on the counter after he had already left.

I opened it and saw the sandwich, fruit, and the little note I had written.

Don’t forget to eat. Love you.

I smiled at the thought of him finding it.

Then I made a decision.

Instead of leaving it there, I packed it up, grabbed my purse, and drove downtown.

I wanted to surprise him.

Nothing more.

The building where Marcus worked was one of those huge glass towers that made everyone walking inside look important. I had visited before, but usually only for office parties or company events.

The receptionist knew me.

At least, I thought she did.

I walked through the lobby with a bright smile, holding the lunch bag in my hand.

The woman at the front desk looked up.

“Good afternoon. Can I help you?””

I smiled.

“Hi. I’m dropping off my husband Marcus’s lunch. He forgot it at home.””

Her fingers stopped moving on the keyboard.

Just for a second.

Then her expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Not like someone who knew a secret.

More like someone who was trying to understand something that didn’t make sense.

“Marcus?”” she repeated.

I laughed softly.

“Yes. Marcus Reed. He works on the twenty-second floor.””

The receptionist stared at me.

Then she slowly looked toward the elevators.

“Mrs. Reed?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She hesitated.

That tiny pause made my stomach tighten.

“I’m sorry,” she said carefully.

“But… his wife already brought him lunch.””

The lobby suddenly felt too quiet.

I thought maybe I had misunderstood her.

“What?””

The receptionist looked uncomfortable.

“His wife. She came about thirty minutes ago.””

My fingers tightened around the lunch bag.

A strange cold feeling moved through my body.

“No,” I whispered.

The receptionist blinked.

“I’m sorry?””

I forced a small laugh because my brain was trying to reject what I had just heard.

“No. That’s not possible.””

The woman looked confused.

“She said she was Mrs. Reed.””

My voice became smaller.

“But… I’m his wife.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The receptionist’s face changed from confusion to concern.

She looked at me, then at the elevator doors behind her.

I could hear the sound of people talking in the distance.

Phones ringing.

Shoes clicking across the marble floor.

A normal afternoon.

Except my entire world had suddenly stopped.

“Maybe there’s been some mistake,” the receptionist said.

I wanted to believe her.

I needed to believe her.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Marcus wasn’t perfect, but he was my husband.

The man who held me when my father passed away.

The man who promised me during our wedding vows that I was the only woman he would ever choose.

The man who told me last night, “I don’t know what I’d do without you.””

My eyes moved toward the elevators.

“Who was she?”” I asked quietly.

The receptionist opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, the elevator indicator lit up.

Twenty-two.

My heart started pounding.

The doors slowly moved apart.

And there he was.

Marcus.

My husband.

Wearing the same gray suit I had watched him put on that morning.

Holding his briefcase.

Smiling.

But he wasn’t alone.

A woman stood beside him.

A woman with her hand resting comfortably on his arm.

A woman who looked completely at home.

Marcus stepped forward.

Then he saw me.

The smile disappeared from his face instantly.

“Nia?””

The woman beside him turned.

Her eyes met mine.

And what I saw on her finger made my entire body go numb.

Because she was wearing a wedding ring.

And Marcus looked at her like he had no idea how to explain the impossible.

“Nia, wait,” he said quickly.

But the woman looked between us.

Confused.

“Marcus,” she whispered, “who is she?””

I felt my heart break before he even answered.

Because in that moment, I realized something terrifying.

One of us had been lied to.

And I was about to find out who.
