Chapter 5: The Woman Before Me

I stared at the message on my phone until the screen went dark.

You talked to Rachel, didn’t you?

Those six words felt heavier than a confession.

Because Marcus wasn’t asking.

He already knew.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“How did he know?”” I whispered.

Rachel looked away.

That small reaction told me she was afraid.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

“Rachel.””

She slowly looked back at me.

“There’s something else you haven’t told me.””

She sat down on the edge of the chair.

“I didn’t want to make things worse.””

I almost laughed.

“Rachel, my husband had another wife.””

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

For years, I had wondered why Rachel always seemed uncomfortable around Marcus.

Why she rarely visited.

Why every conversation between them felt like there was something hidden underneath.

Now I knew.

She had been carrying a secret.

And I had been living inside a lie.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Before you, there was Claire.””

She opened the envelope she had brought.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman stood beside Marcus.

They were smiling.

The kind of smile couples have when they believe they have already found their forever.

My stomach tightened.

“How long were they together?””

“Almost five years.””

I looked at Marcus’s face in the picture.

He looked exactly the same.

Same smile.

Same confidence.

Same eyes.

That was the part that scared me.

He didn’t look like a different person.

He looked like the man I married.

“Did he love her?””

Rachel hesitated.

“I think he loved how she made him feel.””

The answer hurt because it sounded familiar.

Rachel continued.

“Claire was successful. Independent. She had her own business. Marcus admired that.””

“Then what happened?””

Rachel looked down.

“She found out he was hiding things.””

“What things?””

“Different stories. Different promises.””

I felt a cold feeling in my chest.

“Was there another woman?””

Rachel nodded.

“One.””

I closed my eyes.

One.

Before Olivia.

Before me.

“How many people knew?””

“Not many.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus was careful.””

That word stayed with me.

Careful.

Not sorry.

Not confused.

Careful.

Rachel leaned forward.

“He always made sure there was no single moment where everyone could see the truth.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“He didn’t create one huge lie. He created hundreds of small ones.””

The room became quiet.

And suddenly, my memories started changing.

The late nights.

The secret phone calls.

The random business trips.

The way he became defensive when I asked simple questions.

I had spent years explaining away things that never made sense.

Rachel reached for the envelope.

“There’s a letter from Claire.””

I looked at the paper.

“Why didn’t she send it to me?””

“She didn’t know you existed yet.””

That sentence hit me.

I opened the letter carefully.

Claire’s handwriting was neat.

Elegant.

The first line made my heart ache.

If you are reading this, then Marcus has probably convinced you that I was the problem.

I swallowed.

I continued.

He will tell you I was too emotional. Too demanding. Too suspicious. He will tell you I misunderstood him.

My breathing slowed.

Because I knew that pattern.

I knew it because Marcus had used it with Rachel.

Maybe he had used it with me too.

But the truth is simple. Marcus does not leave people. He replaces them.

I stopped reading.

That sentence felt like someone had reached inside my chest.

Rachel watched me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“Did you know about me when Marcus married me?””

She looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

My eyes filled.

“You knew?””

“I found out two weeks before your wedding.””

The pain was different this time.

Not shock.

Not anger.

Just disappointment.

“You let me marry him.””

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“I tried to stop it.””

“You tried?””

“I told him I would tell you.””

I looked at her.

“What did he do?””

She looked away.

“He threatened me.””

My heart stopped.

“What kind of threat?””

Rachel hesitated.

“He said if I destroyed his marriage, he would tell everyone I was unstable. That I was obsessed with ruining his happiness.””

I remembered Marcus saying similar things.

Not about Rachel.

About other people.

A coworker.

An old friend.

Anyone who challenged him became the problem.

I looked down at the letter.

For the first time, I understood.

Marcus didn’t just lie.

He controlled the story.

And everyone around him became a character.

The hero.

The villain.

The person who was wrong.

Depending on what he needed.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from Marcus.

I know Rachel is filling your head with lies.

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

She has always been jealous of me.

I looked at Rachel.

She didn’t need to see the screen.

She already knew.

“He’s doing it now,” she whispered.

I felt something inside me change.

For the first time since I entered his office, I wasn’t just hurt.

I was angry.

Not the kind of anger that screams.

The kind that becomes quiet.

Focused.

“What do I do?”” I asked.

Rachel looked at me carefully.

“You need to find out how far the lie goes.””

“How?””

She pointed at the second envelope.

“The answer might be there.””

I opened it.

Inside was a business card.

A name.

A phone number.

And a sentence written on the back.

The person who knows the truth about Marcus is the one he couldn’t control.

I stared at the name.

Because I recognized it.

And I realized there was someone else who had been watching Marcus’s lies unfold.

May you like

Someone who had been silent all these years.

Someone who might finally tell me everything.
