Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew My Husband

I stood frozen in the middle of that lobby, holding the lunch I had lovingly prepared for a man who suddenly looked like a stranger.

Marcus stared at me.

The woman beside him stared at me.

And somehow, I felt like I was the only person who didn’t belong there.

“Nia,” Marcus said again, stepping away from the woman.

“I can explain.””

Those words.

That exact sentence.

I had heard it in movies.

I had heard people say it after betrayal.

But I never thought I would hear it directed at me.

I slowly looked at the woman.

She was elegant.

Confident.

She wore a beautiful cream-colored dress and carried herself like someone who had nothing to hide.

That somehow made it worse.

Because she didn’t look like someone sneaking around.

She looked like someone who believed she belonged beside him.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

My voice sounded strangely calm.

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The woman looked at him.

“Marcus?””

That was the first moment I noticed something.

She wasn’t angry.

She was confused.

Completely confused.

Like she was waiting for him to explain something that made no sense.

The receptionist quietly looked away, pretending to focus on her computer.

Everyone in the lobby was giving us space.

But nobody was ignoring what was happening.

“Nia,” Marcus said softly, “can we please talk somewhere private?””

I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe those words were coming from him.

“Private?””

I held up the lunch bag.

“I came here because you forgot your lunch.””

My voice cracked slightly.

“I came here because I thought I was doing something nice for my husband.””

The woman’s expression changed.

She looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“Your husband?””

The question hit harder than anything else.

Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.

“Olivia…”

The woman stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Marcus, what did she mean?””

I looked at him.

“Answer her.””

He looked trapped.

For the first time in eight years, I saw fear on my husband’s face.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Fear.

And that scared me more.

“Nia, Olivia, this is not what you think.””

Olivia stared at him.

“Then tell me what it is.””

Silence.

The silence told us everything.

I felt tears building in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.

Not there.

Not in front of strangers.

Not while Marcus stood between two women who both believed they knew him.

“How long?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia…”

“How long have you been lying?””

He lowered his voice.

“Please don’t do this here.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

He was worried about the location.

The audience.

The embarrassment.

Not the fact that my marriage was collapsing in front of me.

Olivia took a step closer.

“Marcus, look at me.””

He did.

And the pain on her face told me she was hurting too.

“I have been with you for three years,” she said quietly.

Three years.

The number echoed in my mind.

Three years.

My hands started shaking.

Because three years ago was when Marcus got promoted.

Three years ago was when he started traveling more.

Three years ago was when he told me work was becoming stressful.

I suddenly remembered every late meeting.

Every weekend conference.

Every time he said, “You know I’m doing this for our future.””

Olivia looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

Her voice broke.

“I swear I didn’t know.””

I wanted to hate her.

I wanted to blame her.

But something in her face stopped me.

She looked just as destroyed as I felt.

I swallowed.

“Then what did you think?””

She looked down.

“I thought Marcus was divorced.””

Marcus immediately looked at her.

“Olivia—”

“No,” she interrupted.

“Don’t.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You told me your marriage ended years ago.””

My chest tightened.

Years ago.

Marcus had never told me that.

Because it wasn’t true.

I looked at my husband.

“You told her I was gone?””

He said nothing.

That was enough.

The lobby felt smaller.

My entire life felt smaller.

The man who shared my bed.

The man who sat across from me at dinner.

The man who kissed me goodbye every morning.

Had created another version of himself.

One where I didn’t exist.

Marcus reached toward me.

“Nia, please.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.””

His hand froze in the air.

For once, he looked like he understood the damage he had done.

But I wasn’t ready to hear excuses.

I turned toward the elevator.

I needed to leave before I broke down.

Then Olivia suddenly spoke.

“Nia.””

I stopped.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I slowly turned around.

“What?””

She looked at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“Marcus told me he had no contact with you anymore…”

My heart sank.

“What are you talking about?””

Olivia reached into her purse.

She pulled out something that made Marcus’s face lose all color.

May you like

“I think you need to see this.””

And when I looked at what she was holding, I realized the lie was much bigger than I ever imagined.
