Chapter 9: The Woman Who Controlled the Family

Olivia didn't answer immediately.

She looked at the twins.

Their tiny faces were peaceful.

They had no idea that the family they had been born into was unraveling around them.

"Where does she want to meet?"" Olivia asked.

Daniel checked the message.

"At the old Bennett estate.""

Mr. Collins immediately shook his head.

"I don't recommend that.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because the estate is still controlled by the private holding company we're investigating.""

Olivia folded Richard's letter carefully.

"Then we're not going there.""

Daniel frowned.

"She says she has the ledger.""

"She can bring it to an attorney's office.""

"She won't.""

"Then she doesn't want to show it to us. She wants something else.""

Mr. Collins nodded.

"Mrs. Bennett is correct.""

Daniel paced across the room.

"My father might be alive. My aunt has the only document that can explain the transfers. We can't just ignore her.""

Olivia looked at him.

"We're not ignoring her. We're refusing to walk into a place she controls.""

Daniel stopped.

For once, he didn't argue.

Mr. Collins made a call to the family's legal team.

Within minutes, a neutral meeting location was arranged.

A private conference room at a downtown law office.

The trustee would attend.

So would an independent financial investigator.

Evelyn agreed to the meeting.

But she made one demand.

She wanted to speak to Daniel alone first.

Olivia refused.

The meeting began at six that evening.

Evelyn Bennett entered wearing a charcoal suit and a string of pearls.

She was in her early sixties, with silver-blond hair and the kind of polished smile that made people instinctively trust her.

She carried a leather folder.

Daniel stood when she entered.

"Aunt Evelyn.""

She kissed his cheek.

"My poor boy.""

Olivia watched.

Evelyn turned toward her.

"Olivia.""

"Hello, Evelyn.""

Evelyn glanced at the stroller.

"And these must be the babies.""

Olivia nodded.

Evelyn leaned forward.

"How beautiful. They look just like their grandfather.""

Olivia's expression tightened.

"Which grandfather?""

Evelyn paused.

Then smiled.

"Richard, of course.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Where is he?""

Evelyn took a seat.

"Safe.""

"Where?""

"That depends.""

Daniel stared.

"On what?""

"On whether you're prepared to stop this investigation.""

Olivia's eyes hardened.

There it was.

Not concern.

Not relief.

A negotiation.

"You want us to stop investigating the money?"" Olivia asked.

Evelyn looked at her.

"I want the family to stop destroying itself.""

Olivia placed Richard's letter on the table.

"Your brother wrote to me.""

For the first time, Evelyn's smile disappeared.

Daniel leaned forward.

"What did you do to him?""

Evelyn sighed.

"Daniel, please. Your father was not well.""

"That's not an answer.""

"He became suspicious. Paranoid. He started accusing everyone around him.""

"Was he alive after the funeral?""

Evelyn looked at Olivia.

Then back at Daniel.

"Yes.""

Daniel's face crumpled.

"Why did you let us believe he was dead?""

Evelyn folded her hands.

"Because he asked me to.""

Olivia frowned.

"What?""

"Richard wanted to disappear. He believed the company was being targeted. He asked me to arrange a private identity and protect the family.""

Daniel stared.

"You arranged his funeral?""

Evelyn nodded.

"With his consent.""

"Then why did you tell me he was dead?""

"Because he believed you were part of the problem.""

Daniel stood.

"That's a lie.""

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"Is it?""

She opened her folder.

Inside were copies of financial transfers.

Olivia recognized the holding company.

Then she saw Daniel's signature.

Not one signature.

Dozens.

Evelyn placed the pages in front of him.

"You authorized these transfers, Daniel.""

He looked down.

"Those were legitimate.""

"Were they?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did you route the money through your children's trust?""

Daniel looked up.

"How do you know about that?""

Evelyn gave a small smile.

"Because I created the account structure.""

Olivia felt a chill move through her.

Evelyn continued.

"Richard trusted me with the family's financial arrangements. I built the holding company. I maintained the accounts. I knew where every dollar went.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Then you were the one moving the money.""

Evelyn tilted her head.

"Don't be childish. You signed the authorizations.""

"Because Martin told me they were routine.""

"And you signed them without reading.""

Daniel had no answer.

Olivia looked at the documents.

Some transfers were dated before Daniel became managing director.

Others were dated months after Richard's supposed death.

The oldest ones went back nearly seven years.

"Why did you use the children's account?"" Olivia asked.

Evelyn looked at her.

"Because it was protected from ordinary corporate audits.""

Olivia's jaw tightened.

"You stole from babies.""

Evelyn shrugged.

"I borrowed from a family account. The money was always intended to remain within the family.""

"Then why wasn't it returned?""

Evelyn leaned back.

"Because the business needed liquidity.""

"Where did it go?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

Olivia looked at the investigator.

He had been quietly photographing the documents.

Then he placed one page in front of Evelyn.

"Can you explain this transaction?""

Evelyn glanced down.

For the first time, her composure faltered.

The transfer was dated five years earlier.

Three days after Richard's funeral.

The recipient was a private medical facility in another state.

The amount was substantial.

Daniel leaned forward.

"What is that?""

Evelyn quickly pulled the page toward herself.

"Nothing.""

The investigator calmly retrieved it.

"It appears to be a payment for long-term residential care.""

Daniel stared.

"For whom?""

Evelyn said nothing.

Olivia examined the reference number.

Then she saw the patient designation.

*R. BENNETT — PRIVATE WARD.*

Daniel stood so abruptly his chair scraped backward.

"Where is my father?""

Evelyn closed the folder.

"I told you. He's safe.""

"Where?""

"He's been receiving medical care.""

"Why?""

"Because he became ill.""

Daniel's voice broke.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Evelyn looked at him coldly.

"Because you were too busy trying to take control of his company.""

Olivia stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Evelyn turned toward her.

"You should be grateful, Olivia. Without me, your family would have lost everything.""

Olivia looked at the woman who had apparently controlled the accounts, the company, and the family's secrets.

Then she asked one question.

"If Richard was alive, why did you need Daniel to believe he was dead?""

Evelyn's expression changed.

She slowly closed the folder.

"Because Richard had changed his will.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

Evelyn looked directly at him.

"Your father removed you as the primary beneficiary.""

The room fell silent.

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

"He left the controlling shares to a different person.""

"Who?""

Evelyn's gaze shifted toward Olivia.

Daniel followed it.

Olivia felt the blood drain from her face.

Evelyn spoke slowly.

"Your father left the company to the only person he believed would protect it.""

Daniel stared at his wife.

"No. He wouldn't.""

Evelyn opened the final page of the folder.

There was a notarized amendment.

A signature.

A date.

And beneath it, the name of the new beneficiary.

*OLIVIA BENNETT.*

Daniel looked at her as though the floor had disappeared beneath his feet.

Olivia couldn't speak.

She had never asked Richard for his company.

She had never wanted his money.

And she had certainly never expected to become the legal owner of the business that had consumed her marriage.

But Evelyn wasn't finished.

She slid one final document across the table.

"There's one condition," she said.

Olivia looked down.

The condition required her to assume control of the trust only after Richard's death was independently confirmed.

Daniel lifted his head.

"Then where is he?""

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"He's waiting.""

"Waiting for what?""

Evelyn looked at Olivia.

"To see whether you'll make the same mistake his son made.""

Olivia felt her pulse quicken.

"What mistake?""

Evelyn leaned closer.

"Trusting the wrong person.""

Then she turned toward the conference room door.

A quiet voice came from the hallway.

"That's enough, Evelyn.""

Everyone turned.

An older man stood in the doorway.

His hair was white.

His shoulders were thinner.

He held a wooden cane in one hand.

Daniel's lips parted.

The man looked at him.

Then at Olivia.

And finally at the two sleeping babies.

"Hello, Daniel.""

Daniel stumbled backward.

"Dad?""

Richard Bennett stepped into the room.

"Hello, son.""

Olivia felt tears fill her eyes.

But Richard didn't embrace Daniel.

He looked directly at Olivia.

And said something nobody in the room expected.

"Before we discuss the company, I need to tell you why I chose you.""

May you like

Then he glanced at Evelyn.

"Because she isn't the only person who betrayed this family.""
