Chapter 8: The Letter Addressed to His Daughter-in-Law

Two hours later, Olivia sat in a private conference room at the terminal.

The twins were asleep in their travel stroller.

Daniel stood beside the window, staring at the harbor.

He had refused to leave without her.

He had also refused to sit down.

His expensive suit was wrinkled. His tie hung loose around his collar. His phone had been vibrating almost continuously.

He hadn't answered a single call.

Then the door opened.

A gray-haired man entered carrying a dark leather briefcase.

"Mrs. Bennett?""

Olivia stood.

"Mr. Collins.""

The trustee placed the briefcase on the table.

"Thank you for waiting.""

Daniel turned immediately.

"Where is the letter?""

Mr. Collins looked at him.

"Mr. Bennett, this correspondence was entrusted to your wife.""

"I'm her husband.""

"That doesn't change the instruction.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You're seriously going to stand here and pretend I'm a stranger?""

Mr. Collins opened the briefcase.

"No. I'm going to follow the legal instructions your father left.""

He removed a thick envelope.

Olivia recognized the handwriting immediately.

Richard had written her a birthday card every year since she married Daniel.

His handwriting was unmistakable.

Careful.

Slightly slanted.

The envelope read:

*For Olivia. Only Olivia.*

Her fingers trembled as she picked it up.

Daniel moved closer.

"Open it.""

She glanced at him.

"Please sit down.""

He didn't.

Olivia broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.

The photograph showed Richard standing outside a modest coastal house.

He looked older than Olivia remembered.

Thinner.

But unmistakably alive.

On the back, a date had been written.

*October 14. Two years after my funeral.*

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.

"That's impossible.""

Olivia unfolded the letter.

She began reading silently.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes moved back to the first paragraph.

Mr. Collins watched her carefully.

"What does it say?"" Daniel demanded.

Olivia looked up.

"Your father says he never intended to leave you the company.""

Daniel stared.

"What?""

She continued reading.

"Not because he didn't love you. Because he believed you were being manipulated by someone you trusted.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's ridiculous.""

Olivia looked at the next paragraph.

Richard described how he had discovered unauthorized payments shortly before his reported death.

He had confronted Martin Hayes.

But Martin had denied everything.

Then Richard had found evidence that the money was being transferred through a company registered under a different name.

The name belonged to someone inside the family.

Olivia read the next line twice.

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

"What?"" Daniel asked.

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she turned the page toward Mr. Collins.

"Who is Evelyn Bennett?""

Mr. Collins looked at the name.

His expression changed.

Daniel frowned.

"My aunt.""

Olivia looked at him.

"Your father's younger sister?""

"Yes.""

"Where is she?""

"She lives in Connecticut.""

Daniel frowned harder.

"Why?""

Olivia read the letter again.

Richard wrote that Evelyn had been given access to certain family accounts after his wife died.

He had trusted her.

He had believed she was protecting the family's interests.

But when he discovered the unauthorized transfers, he realized she had been using a private holding company to move money out of Bennett Maritime.

The same holding company that had received the money from the children's trust.

Daniel sank into a chair.

"No.""

Mr. Collins opened another folder.

"Unfortunately, the financial records support your father's concerns.""

Daniel looked up.

"Then why did my father disappear?""

Mr. Collins folded his hands.

"Because he believed someone was monitoring his movements.""

"Who?""

"We don't know.""

Olivia looked at the photograph.

The coastal house.

The date.

The letter.

Her father-in-law had been alive long after the family believed he was dead.

"Why didn't he contact Daniel?"" she asked.

Mr. Collins hesitated.

"According to the letter, he tried.""

Daniel looked up sharply.

"When?""

"Several times.""

"I never received anything.""

"Your father believed the messages were being intercepted.""

Daniel shook his head.

"By whom?""

Mr. Collins opened another document.

"This is a copy of a communication sent to your office shortly before the funeral.""

Daniel stared at the page.

The sender was Richard Bennett.

The recipient was Daniel.

The message was brief.

*Don't sign anything Evelyn gives you. Don't let her control the trust. I need to see you alone.*

Daniel read it.

Then read it again.

"I never saw this.""

Olivia looked at the date.

It had been sent two days before the funeral.

Daniel turned toward Mr. Collins.

"Who received it?""

"Your executive assistant at the time.""

"Who?""

Mr. Collins answered quietly.

"Your wife.""

Daniel looked at Olivia.

"What?""

Olivia stared at him.

She had been his executive assistant before they married.

She had handled his father's correspondence.

But she had never seen this message.

"Why would it have gone through my office?"" she asked.

Mr. Collins shook his head.

"It was recovered from an archived server. The message was opened, but there is no record of it being forwarded.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Someone deliberately hid it.""

Olivia looked at the letter.

There was one final paragraph.

Richard explained that he had chosen Olivia as the person to receive the information because she was the only member of the family who had never asked him for money, shares, or influence.

He wrote that she had shown him kindness when he was ill.

She had brought meals.

She had sat beside him when he struggled to speak.

And she had treated him like a father rather than a business opportunity.

Olivia's eyes filled.

She remembered those evenings.

Richard sitting in his study, struggling with his medication.

His quiet jokes.

His habit of calling her his daughter even when Daniel wasn't around.

She had thought those moments were ordinary family memories.

Now she understood that he had been watching everything.

The letter ended with a sentence written in darker ink.

*Olivia, if you are reading this, Daniel has probably made a terrible mistake. But do not assume he is the only person responsible. Find the original trust ledger. It will show you who really controls Bennett Maritime.*

Olivia lowered the letter.

"Where is the ledger?""

Mr. Collins closed his briefcase.

"We believe it was removed from the family archive.""

Daniel stood.

"By Evelyn?""

"Possibly.""

Olivia looked toward the window.

Outside, the afternoon sun was fading.

She had spent the entire day uncovering secrets she never wanted to know.

But now she had a choice.

She could focus on Daniel's betrayal.

Or she could protect her children from a family conspiracy that had been operating for years.

She chose her children.

"Mr. Collins, I want the trust secured immediately.""

"Already in progress.""

"I want the children's accounts frozen until every transfer is traced.""

"That can be arranged.""

"And I want a complete independent audit.""

Mr. Collins nodded.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Olivia, wait.""

She turned.

"What?""

"Don't do this without me.""

She looked at him for a long moment.

"You had your chance to do this with me.""

He lowered his eyes.

Then his phone rang.

This time, he answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

Daniel's face changed.

"Aunt Evelyn?""

Olivia looked up.

Daniel listened.

Then his eyes moved toward the letter.

"Where are you?""

A pause.

He swallowed.

"Why are you calling me?""

Another pause.

Then he whispered:

"What do you mean you've got the ledger?""

Olivia stood completely still.

Daniel listened for several more seconds.

And when the call ended, he looked at his wife with an expression she had never seen before.

"My aunt wants to meet us.""

Olivia narrowed her eyes.

"Why?""

Daniel looked down at his phone.

"She says my father is alive.""

Olivia felt her breath catch.

May you like

Then Daniel added the words that changed everything.

"And she says he wants to meet his grandchildren.""
