Chapter 3: The Wife He Never Thought to Fear
Three weeks earlier, Olivia had sat alone at the kitchen island while rain tapped against the windows.
The twins were asleep upstairs.
Daniel's coffee cup sat beside his laptop.
His phone was charging near the fruit bowl.
Olivia hadn't intended to look through it.
She had only wanted to find the confirmation number for a hotel reservation he had asked her to book.
Then a message appeared.
*Claire: I can't wait until we don't have to pretend anymore.*
Olivia stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
*Daniel: Soon. Olivia won't be a problem once the transfer is complete.*
She read it twice.
Then she put the phone down.
The house was silent except for the soft hum of the refrigerator.
For several minutes, she didn't move.
She didn't cry.
She didn't throw anything.
Instead, she opened her own laptop.
Daniel had forgotten that the family office still sent certain financial notices to her personal email.
He had also forgotten that the original trust documents were stored in a secure folder she controlled.
The next morning, Olivia called the company's independent trustee.
By lunchtime, she had learned that Daniel had been attempting to transfer voting rights connected to a major subsidiary without the required approval.
By the following afternoon, she had discovered something worse.
He wasn't simply having an affair.
He was using company funds to finance a private property purchase with Claire.
The property was a luxury waterfront house in Florida.
The down payment had come from an account that was supposed to be used for the company's employee housing program.
Olivia printed the transaction records.
She placed them in a folder.
Then she called her attorney.
Not because she wanted revenge.
Because she wanted to know what was legally hers, what belonged to their children, and how much damage Daniel had already caused.
The answer surprised her.
The company had been founded by Daniel's father, but the controlling voting shares had been transferred into a family trust years earlier.
After his father's death, Daniel had become managing director.
He could run the company.
He could negotiate contracts.
He could make ordinary business decisions.
But he could not sell the controlling stake, transfer it, or use company property as collateral without the trustee's approval.
And Olivia was the trustee's appointed representative.
Daniel knew she had paperwork responsibilities.
He had never understood the extent of them.
He had assumed she was simply signing documents.
He hadn't realized she was protecting the entire structure.
Now, standing in the cruise terminal, he was finally beginning to understand.
"Olivia," Daniel said, his voice barely above a whisper.
She looked at him.
"Yes?""
"We need to discuss this.""
"We've discussed plenty of things, Daniel.""
"Not this.""
"You're right. You usually discuss things with Claire.""
Claire's cheeks flushed.
"Don't drag me into your marriage.""
Olivia looked at her.
"I'm not dragging you anywhere. You walked into this terminal holding my husband's arm.""
Claire opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Olivia, listen to me. Whatever you think you've seen, there's an explanation.""
Olivia glanced at the black suitcase.
"Is that explanation inside your luggage?""
He frowned.
"What?""
"Because you seem very eager to leave.""
His eyes narrowed.
"This isn't funny.""
"I didn't say it was.""
He lowered his voice.
"You're embarrassing me.""
Olivia stared at him.
For a moment, she remembered the man she had married.
The young Daniel who had sat with her on the floor of their first apartment, eating takeout from cardboard boxes.
The man who had promised that no matter how successful he became, their home would always come first.
She remembered holding his hand in the hospital when their daughter was born.
She remembered him crying when their son took his first breath.
She remembered the way he had kissed her forehead and promised he would never let her face motherhood alone.
Then she looked at him now.
A man who had kissed another woman in public and worried about his reputation before his children.
"Daniel," she said, "you embarrassed yourself.""
His expression hardened.
"Don't forget who I am.""
Olivia looked down at the twins.
Then back at him.
"I haven't.""
A new message appeared on Daniel's phone.
He looked at the screen.
His breathing changed.
Claire noticed.
"What now?""
He didn't show her.
"Nothing.""
Olivia's eyes briefly moved to the phone.
"Is it from the board?""
Daniel looked at her sharply.
"How do you know?""
"Because they were supposed to receive the documents at noon.""
He stepped closer.
"You sent them?""
"I approved the release.""
"Without speaking to me?""
Olivia's expression didn't change.
"You weren't available. You were busy.""
Claire looked toward the digital display again.
The announcement had changed.
A second line appeared beneath Olivia's name.
Daniel read it.
His face went completely still.
*SPECIAL BOARD REVIEW — EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY SUSPENDED PENDING INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION.*
He looked at Olivia as if he were seeing her for the first time.
"You can't suspend me.""
"I didn't suspend you.""
"Then who did?""
"The board.""
"You control the board?""
"No, Daniel. The trust controls the voting rights. The board made its decision.""
He shook his head.
"This is because of Claire?""
Olivia gave a small, tired smile.
"No.""
She adjusted her daughter's pink hat.
"This is because of the money you took, the signatures you falsified, and the contracts you tried to transfer.""
Daniel's face changed again.
"Those documents aren't final.""
"That's why the investigation is independent.""
He looked around, suddenly aware of the people passing through the terminal.
"Can we please stop doing this here?""
Olivia studied him.
Then she said something that made him go silent.
"You had three weeks to remember you were a husband and a father. You used every one of those days to make sure I wouldn't discover what you were doing.""
Daniel looked down.
For the first time, he seemed to notice the twins.
His son was awake now, staring at him with wide, curious eyes.
Daniel reached out.
"Hey, buddy.""
Olivia stepped back just enough to keep the baby comfortable.
"Not yet.""
Daniel's hand stopped in midair.
"He's my son.""
"Yes. And he deserves better than being introduced to the consequences of your choices.""
Claire took another step away.
"Daniel, I think you need to explain everything to me.""
He turned toward her.
"Claire, don't.""
She shook her head.
"You told me the company belonged to you.""
"It does.""
"You told me your marriage was over.""
"That's complicated.""
"You told me your wife had no involvement in the business.""
Daniel said nothing.
Claire looked at Olivia.
Then at the announcement.
And finally at the suitcase.
"Did you use company money for the house?""
Daniel's silence answered her.
Claire's face went pale.
Olivia watched the woman slowly understand that she had not been brought into a glamorous new life.
She had been brought into a financial investigation.
Daniel's phone rang.
He stared at the caller ID.
*BOARD CHAIRMAN.*
His fingers trembled as he answered.
"Hello?""
A voice came through the speaker, too faint for Olivia to hear clearly.
Daniel listened.
His shoulders dropped.
Then he looked at his wife.
"What?"" he whispered.
The caller spoke again.
Daniel's face lost every trace of color.
And this time, when he looked toward Olivia, he wasn't angry.
He was terrified.
Because the chairman had just told him that the board had uncovered one more document.
A document carrying Daniel's signature.
May you like
And Olivia's name.
But Olivia had never signed it.
