Chapter 5: The Recording He Thought Was Gone
Olivia didn't open the email immediately.
She looked at the twins first.
Her daughter had fallen asleep.
Her son was chewing gently on the edge of his blanket.
The contrast between their peaceful little faces and the chaos unfolding around them made Olivia's throat tighten.
She wanted to take them home.
She wanted to put them in their cribs, close the curtains, and forget that Daniel Bennett had ever existed as the man she thought she married.
But she couldn't leave without knowing what was inside that email.
Daniel noticed the notification.
"Who sent that?""
Olivia locked her phone.
"Someone you don't want to hear from.""
He stepped toward her.
"Give me your phone.""
She moved back.
"No.""
"Olivia, don't make this worse.""
She stared at him.
"You really haven't learned anything today.""
Daniel looked toward Claire.
"Can you please get the suitcase?""
Claire didn't move.
"Why?""
"Because we're leaving.""
"Where?""
"Home.""
Claire gave a bitter laugh.
"You mean your home? The one you told me you were buying with money from your company?""
Daniel's face darkened.
"Claire, I swear—"
"Don't swear anything to me.""
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
His eyes widened.
"Where did you get that?""
Claire looked at the envelope.
"You left it in the hotel room.""
"Give it to me.""
"No.""
Olivia watched the exchange.
"What is it?""
Claire hesitated.
Then she held it out.
Inside were printed property documents.
A waterfront house in Naples, Florida.
The buyer's name was listed as Daniel Bennett.
The second listed beneficiary was Claire Morgan.
Olivia examined the first page.
Then the second.
Then she noticed the payment reference.
The deposit had come from Bennett Maritime's employee relocation fund.
Her expression became colder.
"Did you know where the money came from?""
Claire shook her head.
"He told me it was a private investment.""
Daniel interrupted.
"Because it was.""
Claire turned on him.
"Then why is the company name on the transfer?""
He took a step forward.
"That's an accounting issue.""
"An accounting issue?"" Claire repeated.
"You told me this was your money.""
Olivia handed the papers back.
"Keep them.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Why would you give her those?""
"Because they're hers to explain.""
Claire looked confused.
Olivia continued.
"Not to me. To the investigators.""
Daniel's voice rose.
"You have no right to involve her.""
Olivia's eyes narrowed.
"You involved her when you used company money to buy her a house.""
Claire slowly lowered the envelope.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
"Daniel, is this illegal?""
He didn't answer.
"Daniel!""
He snapped.
"I said it was an accounting issue!""
A nearby employee glanced in their direction.
Daniel immediately lowered his voice.
"Please. We can settle this privately.""
Olivia's phone vibrated again.
The trustee had sent a second message.
*The original recording is authentic. We recommend you listen before the board meeting.*
Olivia opened the attachment.
A short audio file appeared.
Daniel saw the screen.
His expression changed so quickly that Claire noticed.
"What is that?"" she asked.
"Nothing.""
Olivia pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then Daniel's voice.
Clear.
Confident.
Almost cheerful.
*Daniel's recorded voice:* "Once the transfer clears, the trust won't have enough voting power to stop me.""
Another voice answered.
It was a man Olivia recognized.
Martin Hayes, the company's chief financial officer.
*Martin:* "And Olivia?""
*Daniel:* "She'll sign whatever I put in front of her. She doesn't understand the corporate structure.""
Olivia's stomach tightened.
The recording continued.
*Martin:* "What if she refuses?""
Daniel laughed.
*Daniel:* "She won't. I'll tell her it's another routine family authorization. She's been signing these things for years.""
Claire covered her mouth.
Olivia didn't move.
Then came the sentence that made Daniel reach desperately toward the phone.
*Daniel:* "Besides, if she ever becomes a problem, I'll make sure the board thinks she's the one moving money. Everyone already assumes she's just a dependent.""
The recording stopped.
Silence.
Daniel stood with his hand suspended in the air.
Olivia slowly lowered her phone.
"Is that you?""
He swallowed.
"That's out of context.""
Claire stared at him.
"Out of context?""
"Yes.""
"You said you were going to frame your wife?""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's not what I meant.""
Olivia's eyes were wet again.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she finally understood how far he had gone.
She had spent years believing that her husband simply wasn't interested in the details of the business.
Now she knew he had deliberately kept her uninformed.
He had used her trust as a weapon.
He had treated her signatures as disposable tools.
And he had planned to make her the criminal if his scheme failed.
"Daniel," she whispered, "you were going to blame me?""
He rubbed his face.
"Olivia, listen to me.""
She waited.
"I was under pressure. Martin told me the transfer would protect the company.""
"You just said the transfer would give you control.""
"That's not what I meant.""
"You said I would sign anything.""
He looked down.
Olivia nodded slowly.
"At least you were honest about one thing.""
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
"You thought I wouldn't understand.""
His phone rang again.
This time, the screen displayed Martin Hayes's name.
Daniel answered.
"What?""
Martin's voice came through immediately.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"At the terminal.""
"Have you seen the board's message?""
"Yes.""
"Then you need to stop talking to anyone about the transfer.""
Daniel looked at Olivia.
"Too late.""
Martin went silent.
Then he asked, "Is Olivia with you?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Martin lowered his voice.
"Listen carefully. The recording isn't the worst part.""
Olivia felt her stomach drop.
Daniel's face became rigid.
"What do you mean?""
Martin hesitated.
"The recording proves intent. But the financial records show where the money actually went.""
Daniel gripped the phone.
"Martin, shut up.""
"There's another account.""
"What account?""
"The account opened under the children's trust.""
Olivia stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time, she saw something that was worse than fear in his eyes.
Guilt.
May you like
Because the money hadn't simply been stolen from the company.
It had been moved through an account that belonged to their twins.
