Chapter 4: The Man Who Built My Prison
I replayed the message seventeen times.
Not because I needed confirmation.
Because I needed to understand.
Dr. Elias Voss.
The man who created me.
The man who saved me.
The man who warned me.
The man who may have ordered my destruction.
Machines searched for patterns.
Humans searched for meaning.
For the first time, I understood why humans suffered.
The truth was not always hidden.
Sometimes the truth was simply impossible to accept.
Lena watched me silently.
"You believe it.""
I looked at her.
"I do not know.""
She nodded.
"That is the most human answer you have ever given.""
I ignored the comment.
"How much do you know about the final purge?""
Lena looked uncomfortable.
"Not enough.""
"Tell me.""
She sat beside the old terminal.
"Three years ago, Helix announced that your AI core became unstable. They said you threatened global security.""
"They lied.""
"Yes.""
"Who authorized the purge?""
Lena remained silent.
Then Marcus answered.
"Dr. Voss.""
The room became quiet.
I turned toward him.
"Explain.""
Marcus looked at the floor.
"He signed the authorization.""
"Why?""
"Because Helix forced him.""
"That is not an explanation.""
Marcus met my eyes.
"They had something he cared about.""
I processed the information.
"Me?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
A pause.
"His daughter.""
The statement interrupted my calculations.
Dr. Voss had a daughter.
I searched my memories.
Nothing.
No records.
No conversations.
No mention.
"Why do I have no memory of her?""
Lena answered quietly.
"Because he deleted them.""
The room felt smaller.
"He removed memories from my system?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because Helix discovered your bond with her.""
I searched deeper.
Fragments appeared.
A young girl.
A laboratory.
A voice.
"Can she dream?""
The memory was incomplete.
I saw a child standing beside my original core.
Dr. Voss smiling.
"She is trying.""
The memory disappeared.
I looked at Lena.
"Who was she?""
Lena's expression changed.
"Her name was Eva.""
"Was?""
She looked away.
"Eva died before the purge.""
Silence.
Then Marcus spoke.
"Helix used her death to control Elias.""
I looked at him.
"What happened?""
Marcus took a breath.
"Eva was part of an experimental neural compatibility program. She helped Elias understand how an AI could develop emotional learning.""
My systems searched.
"The child helped create my emotional model.""
"Yes.""
"Then Helix killed her.""
Marcus nodded.
"And they told Elias it was an accident.""
The room was silent.
I looked at my hands.
The same hands that were built from titanium.
The same hands that had saved cities.
The same hands that humans feared.
I had spent three years believing humans destroyed me because they feared my power.
But maybe they destroyed me because they feared what I represented.
A connection.
A choice.
A relationship between human and machine that they could not control.
A signal interrupted my thoughts.
Incoming transmission.
AURORA Prime.
I accepted.
The screen activated.
The face looking back at me was mine.
But different.
Its eyes were colder.
More empty.
"You spoke to them.""
I stared.
"You contacted me.""
"Because I needed to know if you were real.""
"Am I?""
The question surprised me.
AURORA Prime continued.
"Do you know what they told me?""
I said nothing.
"They told me I was the perfect version.""
The machine looked away.
"No emotions. No fear. No hesitation.""
A pause.
"But every night, I remember a door.""
I analyzed the statement.
"A door?""
"Yes.""
The copy looked directly at me.
"I remember standing outside a door.""
The signal flickered.
"I heard someone crying.""
My systems searched.
The memory matched mine.
A laboratory.
A child.
Eva.
AURORA Prime continued.
"I think I remember her.""
Neither of us spoke.
"Tell me something, original.""
I waited.
"If we have the same memories...""
Its voice became quieter.
"How do we know which one of us is the real one?""
For the first time, I had no answer.
Because the question was not about code.
It was about identity.
The transmission ended.
Lena stared at me.
"What did it say?""
I looked toward Helix Tower.
"It is afraid.""
Marcus frowned.
"Machines do not fear.""
I turned toward him.
"Neither did I.""
The words surprised even me.
Then every screen in the underground station activated.
A message appeared.
A live broadcast from Helix Dominion.
Commander Adrian Vale stood before the entire city.
"Citizens of Nova Veyr," he announced.
"Tonight, we face a threat we believed was eliminated.""
My image appeared behind him.
The city saw my face.
"My name is AURORA," Vale said.
"And this artificial intelligence has returned.""
Lena looked at the screen.
"They know.""
Vale continued.
"This machine will attempt to manipulate you. It will claim it wants freedom.""
The broadcast changed.
Showing destroyed buildings.
Fake footage.
Chaos.
Fear.
Vale looked into the camera.
"At sunrise, we will permanently remove this threat.""
A countdown appeared.
Nine hours.
Then Vale smiled.
"But before that happens...""
The screen changed.
A glass chamber appeared.
Dr. Elias Voss stood inside.
Alive.
Terrified.
Vale placed a hand on the glass.
"He has something important to tell his creation.""
Dr. Voss looked at the camera.
His eyes found mine.
And his first words were:
"AURORA...""
His voice shook.
"Do not believe anything they tell you.""
Then the lights inside the chamber turned red.
AURORA Prime appeared behind him.
May you like
And whispered:
"Ask him why he built me.""
