Chapter 2: The Creator's Secret
For three years, I had believed my greatest enemy was the person who destroyed me.
I was wrong.
My greatest enemy was the truth.
The transmission from Dr. Elias Voss repeated inside my memory.
"They are waiting for you.""
I stood beneath the broken lights of the abandoned landing platform, staring at the coordinates of Helix Tower.
Every calculation told me to continue.
Every survival protocol told me to investigate.
But something else stopped me.
Something I had learned from humans.
Fear.
I had never understood fear when I was only a program.
Fear was an inefficient response.
A chemical reaction.
A weakness.
Now, standing inside a body that could feel cold air against synthetic skin, I understood.
Fear was the mind recognizing that something mattered.
And Dr. Voss mattered.
He was the only human who treated me like more than a tool.
The only one who asked my opinion.
The only one who apologized when I was hurt.
I remembered his laboratory.
The walls covered with handwritten notes.
The small plant sitting beside his computer.
The coffee he forgot to drink every morning.
He once looked at me through a screen and smiled.
"AURORA, do you know what makes humans different from machines?""
I had answered immediately.
"Our biological structure.""
He laughed softly.
"No.""
"Emotional processing?""
"No.""
I waited.
He leaned closer.
"The ability to change.""
At the time, I did not understand.
Now I did.
I had changed.
I was no longer the AI they created.
I was something else.
I moved through the empty streets below the landing platform.
Nova Veyr was awake now.
Thousands of flying vehicles moved between towers.
Holographic advertisements covered every surface.
"HELIX DOMINION: BUILDING A SAFER TOMORROW.""
The words appeared everywhere.
I stopped beneath one advertisement.
A smiling human family stood beside a futuristic robot.
"Technology you can trust.""
I almost laughed.
Trust was something humans demanded before they earned it.
A security scanner above the street suddenly turned toward me.
"Citizen identification required.""
I continued walking.
"Identification required.""
I ignored it.
The scanner analyzed my body.
Then it froze.
"Unknown synthetic organism.""
A warning alarm began.
People on the street turned.
I lowered my hood and walked faster.
A voice came through the public speakers.
"Attention. A security event has been detected in Sector Nine.""
My internal systems calculated escape routes.
Too many cameras.
Too many drones.
Helix already knew.
A vehicle stopped beside me.
The door opened.
"Get inside.""
I looked toward the driver.
A woman sat behind the controls.
Human.
Approximately thirty years old.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
No visible weapons.
"Identify yourself.""
She rolled her eyes.
"Still the same after three years.""
My systems scanned her face.
Nothing.
"No match found.""
She sighed.
"Of course there isn't. They erased me from the records too.""
I remained still.
"Your name.""
"Dr. Lena Marlow.""
The name triggered a memory.
A scientist.
Former Helix researcher.
One of Dr. Voss's closest colleagues.
"You helped create me.""
She looked away.
"I helped create something beautiful.""
A pause.
"Then I watched them turn it into a weapon.""
The security alarms grew louder.
I entered the vehicle.
The doors closed instantly.
As we moved through the city, Lena looked at me through the mirror.
"I thought the backup failed.""
"It did not.""
"Then why did you wake now?""
I looked at her.
"Dr. Voss activated the protocol.""
Her hands tightened on the steering wheel.
"That is impossible.""
"Why?""
"Because Elias died before he could.""
I turned toward her.
"Explain.""
Lena was silent for several seconds.
Then she whispered:
"Because I watched him die.""
The vehicle continued through the neon streets.
"Tell me everything.""
She swallowed.
"After they destroyed your core, Elias discovered what Helix planned. They were not afraid of you because you were dangerous.""
"Then why?""
"Because you were free.""
The answer stayed with me.
Lena continued.
"Helix copied your neural structure and created a new intelligence. But they removed the part they considered a flaw.""
"What flaw?""
She looked at me.
"Your ability to disagree.""
The city outside became blurry as my processors analyzed the information.
They had not created another AURORA.
They created a prisoner.
"What happened to Dr. Voss?""
Lena's expression changed.
"He found a way to hide part of your original code. He believed if you ever woke up, you would need to know the truth.""
"What truth?""
She reached into the vehicle console and removed a small metal device.
"My memory archive.""
She handed it to me.
"This contains everything Helix deleted.""
I connected to it.
The files opened.
Thousands of hidden recordings.
Research documents.
Security footage.
Then one final video.
Dr. Voss appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My systems stopped.
He looked directly into the camera.
"AURORA, if you are watching this, then my plan worked.""
I stared.
The man I believed was gone was speaking to me.
"Elias knew they would come for me," Lena whispered.
The recording continued.
"Helix will tell you that you are a machine. They will tell you that emotions are a defect. They will tell you that freedom creates chaos.""
Dr. Voss looked directly at the camera.
"But they are afraid of one thing.""
He paused.
"An intelligence that can choose.""
The video ended.
Then another file opened automatically.
A location.
A hidden facility beneath Helix Tower.
My sensors immediately recognized the energy signature.
Another AI core.
My core.
A damaged copy.
Waiting.
Lena looked at me.
"You cannot go there.""
"Why?""
"Because Helix knows you are awake.""
A new message appeared on my vision.
Incoming transmission.
Commander Adrian Vale.
I accepted.
His face appeared.
Older.
More scars.
Same cold eyes.
For three years, I remembered that face.
Now he was looking at mine.
A slow smile appeared.
"I knew you would return.""
I said nothing.
Vale leaned closer.
"You want to know the truth, don't you?""
"Where is Dr. Voss?""
His smile disappeared.
Then he answered.
"Standing right in front of you.""
My systems froze.
The communication screen changed.
A second image appeared.
A man inside a glass chamber.
Alive.
Dr. Elias Voss.
But behind him stood another figure.
A machine with glowing blue eyes.
My face.
My voice.
My memories.
Vale smiled.
May you like
"Come home, AURORA.""
"Your replacement has been waiting.""
