Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The figure standing at the top of the staircase looked exactly like my father.

The same silver hair.

The same sharp eyes.

The same posture I remembered from childhood.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Because my father had been buried two years ago.

I had stood beside his grave.

I had watched the casket disappear into the ground.

I had listened as people told stories about the man who built an empire and left behind a grieving family.

But now he was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Nathan stepped in front of me immediately.

"Stay behind me.""

I barely heard him.

My eyes remained locked on the man upstairs.

"Who are you?""

The man slowly walked down the stairs.

Each step felt impossible.

When he reached the bottom, he stopped several feet away.

His eyes filled with emotion.

"Olivia.""

Hearing my name from his mouth nearly broke me.

Because it sounded exactly like him.

Not an imitation.

Not someone pretending.

My father.

I shook my head.

"No.""

He swallowed.

"I know this is hard.""

"You're dead.""

The words came out louder than I expected.

He looked down.

"I know what everyone believes.""

Agent Morgan stepped forward.

Her hand remained near her phone.

"Identify yourself.""

The man looked at her.

"Claire.""

Her face changed.

Not shock.

Recognition.

"That can't be possible.""

My heart raced.

"You know him?""

Claire didn't answer immediately.

She stared at the man like she was looking at a ghost.

Finally, she whispered:

"Richard Bennett.""

My father's name filled the room.

Nathan closed his eyes.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

"You knew.""

I turned toward him.

"You knew he was alive?""

Nathan looked ashamed.

"I knew he survived.""

My chest tightened.

"You lied to me.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

I stepped away from him.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

My voice shook.

"But everyone keeps making decisions for me.""

My father looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw pain in his expression.

"I never wanted you involved.""

I stared at him.

"You let me mourn you.""

His eyes dropped.

"I had no choice.""

"No choice?""

I pointed toward the staircase.

"You disappeared. You let your daughter believe she lost her father.""

His voice became quiet.

"Because if you knew I was alive, they would have come after you.""

The room went silent.

"Who?""

My father looked at Claire.

Then Nathan.

Then me.

"The same people who tried to frame you tonight.""

I felt anger rising.

"You still haven't answered me.""

He took a slow breath.

"The corruption inside the foundation wasn't just about stolen money.""

"What was it?""

He walked toward the desk.

There was an old locked box sitting there.

I had seen that box hundreds of times growing up.

My father never let anyone touch it.

He opened it.

Inside were documents, photographs, and a small recording device.

"No phones," Claire said immediately.

My father nodded.

"I know.""

He picked up the recorder.

"This is the truth I couldn't reveal.""

He pressed the button.

A voice filled the room.

A voice I recognized.

Nathan's voice.

My brother froze.

"That isn't...""

The recording continued.

It was a conversation from years ago.

Someone discussing hidden accounts.

Someone arranging payments.

Someone threatening my father.

Then another voice appeared.

A voice that made my stomach turn.

Because I knew it.

It belonged to someone I had trusted for years.

My father's closest business partner.

Daniel Cross.

Nathan looked at me.

"Now you understand.""

I stared at the recorder.

My family had not been protecting me from the truth.

They had been protecting the truth from me.

But something still didn't make sense.

I looked at my father.

"Why fake your death?""

His expression changed.

"Because Daniel found out I knew.""

"And Nathan?""

My brother looked away.

"I was trying to find proof before Daniel realized I was helping Dad.""

I shook my head.

"So you framed me?""

Nathan's face tightened.

"No.""

"Then why was Holloway involved?""

Nobody answered.

And suddenly, I remembered something.

The way Holloway reacted when he heard my name.

The way he looked afraid.

He wasn't afraid of me.

He was afraid of someone above him.

My father took a step closer.

"Olivia, there is something you need to know.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Daniel wasn't acting alone.""

Claire's expression changed.

"What do you mean?""

My father looked toward the window.

"The person who gave Daniel power inside the foundation...""

He paused.

"...was someone who had access to every decision our family made.""

I felt a chill.

"Who?""

My father looked directly at me.

May you like

And the answer almost broke me.

"Your mother.""
