Chapter 1: The Traffic Stop
The police officer thought he had already won before he even opened my car door.
He stood beside my vehicle with a small plastic bag in his gloved hand, wearing the kind of smile that only appeared when someone believed they had complete control.
"This is going to make things very difficult for you," Officer Derek Holloway said.
The flashing blue lights reflected across my windshield as rain tapped softly against the roof of my car.
Most people would have started crying.
Most people would have begged.
But I just looked at the bag in his hand and calmly asked, "You really brought that here to put in my car?""
For a second, his smile froze.
The confidence in his eyes flickered.
Then it came back.
"You should be careful with your accusations," he said sharply.
"Making false claims against an officer can get you into even more trouble.""
I leaned back in my seat, studying him carefully.
His badge.
His expression.
The slight nervous movement of his fingers.
Everything about him told me one thing.
He was not investigating me.
He was performing.
"My accusations?"" I repeated.
Officer Holloway stepped closer.
"Ma'am, I suggest you cooperate. We found illegal substances inside your vehicle. You can either make this easy on yourself, or you can make a bad situation worse.""
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because what he did not know was that I had spent the last fifteen years learning exactly how people like him operated.
My name was Olivia Bennett.
And I was not the helpless woman he thought he had pulled over on a dark highway.
I was the person his entire department had been trying to avoid.
But he had no idea.
Not yet.
The night started like any ordinary drive home.
I had just left a late meeting at my family's foundation office outside the city. The roads were nearly empty, and I was looking forward to getting home, taking off my heels, and spending a quiet evening with my daughter.
Then I saw the patrol car behind me.
The lights came on.
I checked my speed.
I was driving below the limit.
Still, I pulled over.
Officer Holloway approached my window slowly.
"License and registration.""
I handed them over.
He looked at my name on the license.
And something changed.
It was subtle.
A tiny pause.
A quick glance.
But I noticed.
"Olivia Bennett," he said.
"Yes.""
"Interesting.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
He ignored the question.
Instead, he walked around my car.
Five minutes later, he returned with that same confident smile.
"I need you to step out of the vehicle.""
"Why?""
"We need to conduct a search.""
"I don't consent to that.""
His smile widened.
"You don't have to.""
That was when I knew.
He was not worried about permission.
He already believed he had everything planned.
I stepped out of the car.
The rain touched my face as he searched the vehicle.
His partner stood near the patrol car, looking uncomfortable.
A younger officer.
Someone who seemed like he wanted to disappear.
Then Derek opened the passenger door.
A few seconds later, he lifted the small bag.
And that smile appeared.
The smile of someone who believed he had just created my downfall.
"Looks like we have a problem.""
I stared at him.
"No.""
His eyebrows lifted.
"No?""
I looked directly into his eyes.
"You have a problem.""
His expression hardened.
"Watch your words.""
I took a slow breath.
Then I said the sentence that made his entire attitude change.
"I don't think you know who I am.""
For the first time that night, Officer Holloway looked uncertain.
But before he could respond, the radio attached to his shoulder suddenly crackled.
The sound cut through the silence.
"Unit 47, respond immediately.""
He ignored it.
"Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your back.""
The radio crackled again.
Louder this time.
"Unit 47, this is urgent. Confirm identity of driver.""
Officer Holloway frowned.
He reached for the radio.
"Dispatch, this is Holloway. Go ahead.""
A pause followed.
Then the dispatcher's voice changed.
"Officer Holloway... the woman you stopped is Olivia Bennett.""
His face remained blank.
Until the dispatcher continued.
"Director of the State Police Oversight Investigation.""
The color drained from his face.
The rain kept falling.
Nobody moved.
And then the dispatcher said something that made Officer Holloway slowly lower the plastic bag from his hand.
"Officer Holloway... you need to explain why the evidence you just reported was already documented in an internal investigation file three days ago.""
His partner looked at him.
Confused.
Terrified.
And I finally saw the fear appear in Derek Holloway's eyes.
Because he realized one thing.
The woman he tried to frame was the person who had been investigating him.
And I had not been pulled over by accident.
Someone had sent him.
May you like
The only question was...
Who?
