Chapter 2: The Name Behind The Trap

Officer Derek Holloway stopped smiling.

That was the first thing I noticed.

For the entire traffic stop, he had carried himself like a man who knew exactly how the story would end.

But now?

His shoulders were tense.

His hand tightened around the plastic bag.

And his eyes kept moving between me and the radio.

"Dispatch," he said slowly, trying to regain control, "there must be some mistake.""

The voice on the radio remained calm.

"There is no mistake, Officer Holloway.""

His partner, Officer Mason Reed, looked at him.

"Derek... what is going on?""

Holloway ignored him.

Instead, he stepped closer to me.

"Ms. Bennett, this situation has been misunderstood.""

I looked at him.

"Five minutes ago, you told me I was going to jail.""

His jaw tightened.

"I was following procedure.""

"No," I replied.

"You were following a plan.""

The silence afterward was heavy.

Officer Reed looked between us.

"What plan?""

Nobody answered.

Because Derek Holloway knew.

And now I knew too.

He had not randomly chosen my car.

He had known exactly who I was.

He knew my name before I ever showed him my identification.

That meant someone had given him information.

Someone powerful enough to make a police officer risk his entire career.

I crossed my arms.

"Officer Holloway, why don't you tell your partner why you knew my name before checking my license?""

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Officer Reed noticed.

"Derek?""

"I don't know what she's talking about.""

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Because people like Derek always made the same mistake.

They believed intimidation worked forever.

They believed everyone eventually broke.

But they never expected someone to stay calm.

The patrol lights continued flashing as another vehicle approached in the distance.

A black SUV.

It stopped behind the police cars.

A woman stepped out.

She wore a dark coat and carried herself with quiet authority.

Officer Holloway looked at her.

And his expression completely collapsed.

"No...""

I turned toward the woman.

I knew her.

Everyone in my line of work knew her.

Agent Claire Morgan.

The person who had spent months collecting information about corruption inside the department.

She walked toward us.

"Officer Holloway," she said.

He swallowed.

"Agent Morgan.""

She glanced at the evidence bag.

Then at me.

"Ms. Bennett, are you injured?""

"No.""

"Did he search your vehicle without proper authorization?""

Holloway immediately interrupted.

"That is not what happened.""

Claire looked at him.

"Then explain what happened.""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no explanation.

Only excuses.

"I was conducting a routine stop.""

Claire nodded slowly.

"A routine stop where you discovered evidence that appeared in a vehicle belonging to the person currently leading the investigation into your department.""

Her words hit harder than any accusation.

Officer Reed stared at Derek.

"Is that true?""

Holloway looked away.

That was his answer.

I stepped closer.

"Someone wanted me removed from the investigation.""

Claire looked at me.

"Yes.""

Her voice became quieter.

"And we believe we know who.""

The rain suddenly felt colder.

"Who?""

Claire reached into her folder.

She did not show me any documents.

She did not need to.

She simply said a name.

A name that made my stomach tighten.

"The person who arranged this traffic stop was someone inside your own family.""

I froze.

"My family?""

Claire nodded.

"Someone who knew your schedule. Someone who knew you would be alone tonight. Someone who knew exactly where to place that evidence.""

Officer Holloway looked down.

But I noticed something.

A tiny movement.

A nervous reaction.

Like he was afraid of one specific person.

I turned toward him.

"You weren't working alone.""

His silence confirmed it.

Claire stepped closer.

"Olivia, before we continue, there's something else you need to know.""

"What?""

She looked at me with a serious expression.

"The person who ordered this...""

She paused.

"...is standing much closer to you than you think.""

And then Officer Holloway's phone suddenly began ringing.

He looked at the screen.

His face went completely pale.

Because the caller's name was not hidden.

It was someone I knew.

May you like

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been pretending to protect me all along.
