Chapter 6: The Name On The Account
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was heartbroken.
Not anymore.
Heartbreak comes from losing something you thought was real.
But what I felt now was something else.
I felt like I had been living inside a story someone else wrote.
Every memory had a question attached.
Every conversation had a hidden meaning.
By morning, I had one goal.
Find the truth.
Daniel was sitting at the kitchen table when I walked downstairs.
He looked exhausted.
Good.
For once, I wanted him to feel the weight of the uncertainty he had created.
“You didn’t sleep,” he said.
Neither did you.
He looked down.
“I know you’re angry.””
I poured myself coffee.
“Anger would mean I still expect something from you.””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t let that distract me.
“Who is connected to the account?””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“What account?””
I stared at him.
“Don’t.””
He sighed.
“Claire.””
“No.””
I placed the cup down.
“You have spent years making me question my own instincts.””
I leaned closer.
“But now I know when you’re lying.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
“Who is it?””
He remained silent.
Then my phone rang.
A number I didn’t recognize.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice responded.
“Is this Claire Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Thomas Reed.””
The name meant nothing.
“I’m calling because I believe you deserve to know what Daniel has been doing.””
Daniel stood up immediately.
“Claire, hang up.””
I looked at him.
That reaction told me everything.
“Who is this?””
Thomas continued.
“I worked with Daniel three years ago.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What happened?””
“He asked me to create a private account.””
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“Stop.””
I ignored him.
“What kind of account?””
Thomas hesitated.
“One connected to your identity.””
The room became silent.
“Why?””
“Because he said if anything went wrong, the money needed to appear protected.””
I stared at Daniel.
“Protected from what?””
Thomas paused.
Then said:
“From you.””
The word felt like a slap.
Not because I believed him completely.
Because a small part of me had always feared Daniel saw me as someone to control.
“Thank you for calling,” I said.
I ended the call.
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire, it’s not what you think.””
I laughed quietly.
“That sentence should be printed on your business cards.””
He stepped closer.
“I was trying to protect us.””
“Protect us?””
“Yes.””
“By hiding money?””
He had no answer.
“By cheating?””
His eyes dropped.
“By planning a future without me?””
“Claire…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice stayed calm.
“Don’t say my name like you’re the victim.””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw him understand something.
I wasn’t trying to punish him.
I was done.
A few hours later, I met with a lawyer.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I wanted protection.
The lawyer, Amelia Grant, listened carefully as I explained everything.
When I finished, she opened a folder.
“Claire, before you make any decisions, there is something you need to understand.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Daniel made one mistake.””
I frowned.
“Which one?””
“He underestimated you.””
I didn’t respond.
Because that was the first time someone had said something that felt true.
When I returned home, Daniel was waiting.
But he wasn’t alone.
Vanessa was standing beside him.
She looked different.
The confidence was gone.
The victory was gone.
She looked nervous.
“Claire,” she said.
I stopped.
“What do you want?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“I need to talk to you.””
I almost walked away.
Then she said:
“Daniel lied to me too.””
I froze.
Vanessa swallowed.
“He never planned to leave you.””
The room became silent.
“He planned to use me.””
I looked at Daniel.
And his face told me she was telling the truth.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I thought I was taking your place.””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“But I was just another person he was controlling.””
Daniel’s voice became desperate.
“Vanessa, don’t.””
She looked at him.
“No.””
Then she turned back to me.
“I found something.””
She reached into her bag.
And placed a small envelope on the table.
“This is the proof that Daniel was never choosing me.””
I stared at the envelope.
Then at Daniel.

Because suddenly, the woman who came to destroy my marriage…
