Chapter 4: The Truth In The Papers
The next morning, I arrived at the bakery fifteen minutes early.
I barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Daniel standing in our living room.
Not apologizing.
Not explaining.
Just afraid.
That bothered me more than his cheating.
Because a guilty person fears consequences.
But an innocent person fights for the truth.
Rachel arrived carrying a small folder.
She looked exhausted.
“Claire.””
I stood.
“Rachel.””
She sat across from me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she pushed the folder toward me.
“I wish I had never found this.””
I looked at it.
“What is it?””
“Something Daniel never wanted you to see.””
My fingers touched the folder.
“Before I open this, tell me something.””
She looked up.
“What?””
“Does Daniel know you have this?””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
“Does Vanessa?””
“No.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of financial records.
I scanned the pages.
Numbers.
Accounts.
Names.
I looked confused.
“I don’t understand.””
Rachel leaned forward.
“Look at the account owner.””
I followed her finger.
Then I froze.
My name.
My full name.
I looked at Rachel.
“What is this?””
“That’s the problem.””
I looked back down.
The account was connected to money I didn’t recognize.
“How much is this?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Enough that Daniel would have a reason to hide it.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Daniel may have been moving money without telling you.””
I stared at the papers.
The cheating suddenly felt different.
Not smaller.
Just part of something bigger.
For years, Daniel handled most of our finances.
I trusted him.
I never questioned him.
Because that’s what marriage was supposed to be.
Trust.
Rachel watched me carefully.
“Claire, I know this is overwhelming.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She stopped.
“I’m not overwhelmed.””
I looked at the documents again.
“I’m finally awake.””
Rachel’s expression softened.
“I’m sorry.””
I closed the folder.
“How did you find this?””
“At work.””
“Daniel’s company?””
She nodded.
“He made some unusual transfers.””
I looked at her.
“Why would he use my name?””
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
After we left the bakery, I drove home slowly.
Not because I was scared.
Because I was thinking.
About every conversation.
Every decision.
Every time Daniel told me something was “complicated.””
I always assumed marriage problems were emotional.
I never considered they could be calculated.
When I arrived home, Daniel was waiting.
He stood near the kitchen counter.
“You were with Rachel.””
I placed my bag down.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“What did she tell you?””
I studied him.
Not the husband I loved.
The man standing in front of me.
The man who had secrets.
“Why are you asking?””
“Because she’s trying to destroy us.””
I almost smiled.
“Us?””
He looked confused.
“Yes. Us.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that word.””
“What word?””
“Us.””
I stepped closer.
“But I’m starting to realize there hasn’t been an ‘us’ for a long time.””
His jaw tightened.
“Claire, whatever Rachel showed you, it’s not what you think.””
That sentence.
That exact sentence.
People say it when they know something looks bad.
I crossed my arms.
“Then explain.””
He became quiet.
“Daniel.””
He looked away.
And that silence answered before he did.
“You can’t explain.””
“I can.””
“Then do it.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
His expression changed.
“Claire, please.””
“No.””
My voice remained calm.
“I spent years begging you to communicate with me.””
I picked up my bag.
“I’m not begging anymore.””
I walked toward the stairs.
Then he said something that stopped me.
“Vanessa doesn’t know either.””
I turned around.
“What?””
Daniel looked nervous.
“She thinks she knows everything.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
He rubbed his face.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“You’re going to need a better word than that.””
Before he could answer, there was a knock at the door.
Daniel froze.
I noticed.
And that scared me.
Because whoever was standing outside…
He recognized the danger before I did.
I walked toward the door.
Daniel whispered.
“Claire, don’t.””
My hand touched the handle.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
I opened the door.
And the person standing there made Daniel’s face lose all color.
Because it wasn’t Vanessa.
May you like
It was someone from Daniel’s past.
Someone carrying the one thing he had spent years trying to hide.
