Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Smile

I stared at the message on my phone until the screen dimmed.

For a moment, I considered putting it away.

I had spent the last few hours convincing myself that I didn’t need more explanations.

I didn’t need more details about Daniel’s betrayal.

I didn’t need another piece of information that could hurt me.

But then I looked at the name.

Rachel Morgan.

My former coworker.

And the last person I expected to contact me.

Rachel and I had worked together almost seven years ago. She was the kind of person who noticed everything but spoke very little.

She had always been polite to Daniel.

Too polite.

Back then, I never understood why she sometimes looked at him with disappointment.

Now, sitting alone in my car outside a quiet coffee shop, I wondered if she had known something I didn’t.

I called her.

She answered after the second ring.

“Claire?””

Her voice sounded nervous.

“Rachel, you said I needed to know the truth.””

There was a long pause.

“I wasn’t sure if I should contact you.””

“That usually means it’s something important.””

She sighed.

“It is.””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“Tell me.””

“I saw Daniel with Vanessa months ago.””

My stomach tightened.

I closed my eyes.

“Months?””

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than I expected.

Not because he cheated.

I already knew that.

But because it meant every moment I thought was real had been happening while he was living another life.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I tried.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I called you twice.””

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

My heart sank.

Six months ago.

That was around the time Daniel started coming home late.

The time he told me he was stressed at work.

The time I believed him.

“I left messages,” Rachel continued.

“But Daniel called me afterward.””

I sat up.

“What did he say?””

Her voice became quieter.

“He told me not to interfere with his marriage.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“He said that?””

“Yes.””

I looked out the window.

The city moved around me.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Everyone continuing their normal lives while mine had suddenly changed.

“Rachel, why are you telling me now?””

“Because I saw what happened today.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“You saw?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“I was nearby when Vanessa went to your house.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Rachel continued.

“Claire, that woman didn’t come there because Daniel wanted her to.””

I looked down.

“Then why?””

“Because she thought she had won.””

I said nothing.

“She has been pressuring him for weeks.””

That surprised me.

“Pressuring him?””

“Yes.””

Rachel sighed.

“Daniel told people different stories. He told Vanessa your marriage was basically over. He told other people he was just confused.””

My hands tightened.

“So he lied to everyone.””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

And somehow, that was worse.

Because Daniel wasn’t a man who made one terrible mistake.

He was a man who built a world of lies and expected everyone else to live inside it.

“Rachel,” I said quietly, “why do you know so much?””

Another silence.

Then she answered.

“Because I wasn’t just watching Daniel.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

“I was investigating something at work.””

“What kind of something?””

“Financial problems.””

The words caught my attention.

“Daniel’s company?””

“Yes.””

I sat straighter.

“What problems?””

“I don’t want to say too much until you see the documents.””

I immediately frowned.

“Documents?””

“Yes. I have copies.””

I looked around the coffee shop.

“Rachel, what are you saying?””

“I’m saying Vanessa isn’t the only thing Daniel has been hiding.””

The air suddenly felt heavier.

For twelve years, I thought my biggest problem was a husband who stopped loving me.

Now I wondered if I had been looking at the wrong betrayal.

“When can we meet?”” I asked.

“Tomorrow morning.””

“Where?””

“The old bakery near your office.””

I nodded.

“Okay.””

Before she hung up, she said something that stayed with me.

“Claire?””

“Yes?””

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at the empty passenger seat beside me.

“For what?””

“For knowing something was wrong and not being able to stop it.””

I closed my eyes.

“Rachel, you’re not the one who made promises to me.””

After the call ended, I sat there for a long time.

Then I drove home.

Not because I wanted to return.

Because I needed answers.

The house was dark when I arrived.

For a second, I thought Daniel had left.

Then I saw his car.

My hand rested on the doorknob.

I expected anger.

I expected pain.

Instead, I felt something else.

Clarity.

I opened the door.

The living room lights were on.

Daniel was sitting on the couch.

Alone.

Vanessa was gone.

He looked up.

“Claire.””

I didn’t respond.

His eyes moved to my face.

“You talked to someone.””

It wasn’t a question.

I stared at him.

“How do you know?””

He looked away.

And that small movement told me everything.

“Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“I’m trying to fix this.””

I almost laughed.

“Fix what?””

“Our marriage.””

I slowly walked closer.

“You brought another woman into our home.””

“I know.””

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“You embarrassed me.””

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“Then what exactly are you trying to fix?””

He had no answer.

And for the first time, I saw something in his eyes.

Fear.

Not fear of losing me.

Fear of losing control.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Rachel.

One sentence.

“Bring your marriage documents tomorrow. Daniel has been hiding something about your name.””

I looked at the message.

Then at my husband.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“What did she say?””

I locked my phone.

“Nothing.””

But he knew.

And the way his face changed told me one thing.

May you like

Whatever Rachel knew…

Daniel was terrified I would find out.
