Chapter 9: The Truth Ben Feared Most

Sarah held the second envelope.

The date on the front was unmistakable.

It was the day she married Ben.

She remembered every detail of that day.

Her white dress.

The flowers Laura had helped arrange.

Ben's nervous smile when he first saw her walking toward him.

The way he had held her hands and promised that he would never let her face life's difficulties alone.

Now she was holding an envelope dated from that very day.

“Who wrote this?”” she asked.

Laura sat down slowly.

“Ben.””

Sarah looked at her.

“Why was it hidden in your apartment?””

“Because he asked me to keep it.””

“Why?””

Laura shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Sarah turned toward Arnold.

“Do you know?””

He hesitated.

“I know Ben wanted it kept separate from the other documents.””

“What's inside?””

“I haven't read it.””

Sarah examined the sealed flap.

There was no indication that it had ever been opened.

She looked at Laura.

“Did you read it?””

Laura shook her head.

“No.””

“Why should I believe you?””

Laura began crying again.

“Because I'm your sister.””

Sarah's expression softened for only a second.

“That's exactly why this hurts.””

She carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single folded letter and a small photograph.

Sarah took out the photograph first.

It showed Ben standing beside Rebecca.

The image was older than the other one.

They were outside a building Sarah didn't recognize.

On the back, Ben had written:

The beginning of everything.

Sarah's fingers went cold.

She unfolded the letter.

Sarah,

There is something about our wedding day that I have never been able to explain properly.

I need you to know that I didn't meet you by accident in the way you have always believed.

Sarah stopped reading.

She looked up.

“What?””

Arnold moved closer.

“Continue.””

She lowered her eyes.

Before we met at the café, I had already heard your name. Someone had told me about you. I knew there was a possibility we would meet, but I didn't know what would happen afterward.

Sarah's breath caught.

She read the next lines.

I never planned to fall in love with you. I never planned for you to become the most important person in my life.

But when I saw you that evening, everything changed.

Sarah lowered the letter.

The room seemed to tilt.

She remembered the café.

The rain.

The umbrella.

The conversations.

Had Ben known about her before that evening?

Had their first meeting been arranged?

“Laura,” she whispered.

Her sister stood up.

“Sarah—”

“Did you know?””

Laura's lips trembled.

“I knew there was something about that night.””

“Something?””

“I didn't know the whole story.””

Sarah looked at the photograph.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

Laura reached for her hand.

“Because Ben begged me not to.””

Sarah pulled away.

She continued reading.

Rebecca was the person who first brought your name to my attention. She knew something about your family that I didn't understand at the time.

When she told me the story, I didn't believe her. I thought she was mistaken.

Then I met you.

I kept asking myself whether I should tell you. Every time I tried, I became afraid that you would think our relationship had been built on a lie.

I wanted you to love me for who I was, not because of what happened before we met.

Sarah stopped.

She looked at Arnold.

“What happened before we met?””

Arnold took a slow breath.

“Ben may have discovered that Rebecca knew about a connection between your families.””

“My family and Ben's?””

He nodded.

“Something that predates your marriage.””

Sarah looked at Laura.

“Did our parents know?””

Laura shook her head.

“I don't think so.””

“Then who did?””

Laura didn't answer.

Sarah returned to the letter.

The final paragraph was written in different handwriting.

It wasn't Ben's.

She recognized it immediately from the notes in the folder.

Rebecca's handwriting.

If Sarah ever reads this, tell her the truth about the night her father disappeared from our lives.

Sarah froze.

Her father?

She read the sentence again.

Then she looked at Laura.

“What does this have to do with Dad?””

Laura's face crumpled.

“Sarah, please sit down.””

“Why?””

“Because I think you need to hear this carefully.””

Sarah backed away from the table.

“My father died years ago.””

Laura nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why would Rebecca write about him?””

Laura covered her mouth.

“I don't know exactly what she knows.””

Sarah turned toward Arnold.

“Do you?””

The doctor was silent.

She stepped closer.

“Doctor, you knew Ben before this happened. You knew about the envelope. You knew he wanted everything hidden. Did you know something about my father?””

Arnold finally spoke.

“I knew Ben had been trying to verify a story Rebecca told him.””

“What story?””

“That your father had left behind information connected to someone in Ben's past.””

Sarah shook her head.

“That makes no sense.””

“I understand.””

“My father had nothing to do with Ben's family.””

“That's what Ben believed.””

Sarah stared at him.

“What changed?””

Arnold looked toward the folder.

“Rebecca showed him something.””

“What?””

“A document bearing your father's signature.””

Sarah's hands began trembling.

“Where is it?””

“Ben has it.””

“Then why isn't it here?””

“Because he wanted to verify its authenticity before showing it to you.””

Sarah let out a broken laugh.

“So my husband has been investigating my father behind my back?””

“He wasn't investigating your father,” Arnold said.

“He was trying to understand why Rebecca brought him into the matter.””

Sarah turned away.

The room felt suffocating.

Her marriage.

Her sister.

Her father's memory.

Everything seemed to be connected by a secret that everyone else had known about before she did.

Then Laura spoke.

“Sarah, there's something I need to confess.””

Sarah turned.

“What now?””

Laura wiped her cheeks.

“Ben didn't ask me to hide everything.””

“What do you mean?””

“He asked me to tell you the truth if something happened to him.””

Sarah's heart skipped.

“What could happen to him?””

Laura shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Then why would he say that?””

“Because he gave me instructions.””

Laura reached into the folder and pulled out a small sheet of paper.

It was folded into quarters.

She handed it to Sarah.

“Read this.””

Sarah opened it.

The handwriting was Ben's.

Laura, if I cannot explain everything myself, tell Sarah that the person she should be looking for is not Rebecca.

The person she needs to find is the one who kept Rebecca's original documents.

Do not let anyone destroy them.

Sarah looked up.

“Who has those documents?””

Laura shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Arnold took the paper and read it.

His expression changed.

“Ben never told me about this instruction.””

Sarah looked between them.

“Then who has the documents?””

Laura hesitated.

“There's one person who might.””

“Who?””

Laura looked at Sarah.

“Your mother.””

Sarah's phone slipped slightly in her hand.

Her mother?

The woman who had spent years refusing to discuss her father's final months?

The woman who always changed the subject whenever Sarah mentioned old family photographs?

Sarah remembered something.

A locked cabinet in her mother's house.

A cabinet she had been told never to open.

She had assumed it contained old family paperwork.

Now she wasn't so sure.

Sarah immediately called her mother.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then a familiar voice answered.

“Sarah, sweetheart?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Mom, I need to ask you something.””

“What's wrong?””

“Do you still have Dad's old documents?””

A long silence followed.

Then her mother asked a question Sarah would never forget.

“Did Ben finally tell you?””

Sarah's entire body went cold.

“What?””

Her mother began breathing unevenly.

“Sarah, listen to me. Whatever you've heard, you need to stay away from that hospital for now.””

“Why?””

“Because Ben should never have brought you into this.””

Sarah stared at Arnold.

“Mom, what are you talking about?””

Her mother's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Rebecca isn't the person you should be afraid of.””

Sarah gripped the phone.

“Then who?””

Another silence.

Then her mother answered.

“Your father wasn't the man Ben believes he was.””

Sarah felt the floor disappear beneath her.

“What does that mean?””

Her mother began crying.

“There's something I should have told you years ago.””

Sarah's eyes filled.

“What?””

Her mother took a shaky breath.

And then she said:

“Ben didn't discover this secret by himself. I was the one who gave Rebecca the documents.””

Sarah stopped breathing.

Her mother continued.

“And I did it because I thought it was the only way to protect you.””

The call ended.

Sarah stood motionless, the phone pressed against her ear.

Behind her, Arnold slowly closed the folder.

Laura began sobbing.

And Sarah finally understood that the secret surrounding her husband was not simply about their marriage.

It had started long before she ever met Ben.

May you like

And her own mother had been hiding it all along.

*But why had she chosen Rebecca to reveal it?*
